Master of Wine Blind Tastes Wines $3 to $300

A blind wine tasting of four wines by Bob Paulinski, Master of Wine. The wines range from $3 to $300 (USD). The wines can be from anywhere, made from any grape variety or varieties and be from any vintage. The wines are considered using a funneling method that gradually eliminates options that the wine cannot be based on attributes that can be observed in the glass. In addition to the blind tasting, there is discussion around the price points. The wines were as follows. The pricing is California costs.
1) 2019 Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon, Langhorne Creek, Australia $20(USD)
2) 2018 Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon, California $3
3) 2016 Lail Vineyards J Daniel Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $300
4) 1996 Giacomo Ascheri Barolo Sorano, Piedmonte, Italy $60

    I really love your deductive reasoning. I am not in the wine industry, but I think blind tasting really helps consumers hone in on characteristics they like or don't like in wines. It helps develop a taste memory that is much more focused. Thanks for putting the content out there; for many people that don't get regular exposure to wine professionals, this stuff is gold.

    Great video. I’ve been tasting blind much more regularly. For me it’s been a great tool to remove bias to see whether I truly prefer a more expensive wine over a less expensive one, and I let that influence my future purchasing. In some cases the exults have been surprising, and it’s allowed me to back off some pricey, allocated wines.

    I just recently stumbled upon your channel! Awesome content Bob! I also like blind tastings...I try to always cover the bottle when I bring to parties or tastings with fellow wine enthusiasts. There are always those (hate to say it) snobs...that look down (or up) on certain wines based on just the label, price, where it's from (Oh...yeah I drink mostly 'French' etc)...so covering the bottles definitely help taking away those judgments while tasting! And yes we wait until we finish all before we open the cover!

    It seems like you preferred the J. Daniel to the the barolo. Please do a video on comparing old wines and new wines. Why do people collect and cellar wines for years if the wine does not drink as well? If you are aging to drink, how does one find out when to drink? What are the qualities of an older wine that are "superior" to a younger wine? Enjoyed the video. Thanks!

    Love the content as usual Bob, do you recommend the Barolo? I am told it's difficult to pick between sangiovese and nebbiolo bling because there both lighter in colour and there both slightly tart?

  • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine

    @bobpaulinskimasterofwine

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the good word. I’ve had better Barolo from ‘96. This one was good, but it probably peaked easily five years ago. By my experience, Sangiovese will show more sour cherry notes, but at 20+ years the fruit is gone. Also, Sangiovese often shows an orange rim in the glass.

  • @lauracanna2201

    Hi Bob, you did very well, despite the Barolo. I find amazing how you can guess not only the grape but also where they come from! As someone else suggested already (and I know you wll be taking that on board) it's best to check all the wines out before revealing the bottle. Furthermore I would also add an extra level of challenge by having to decide the price at the moment of tasting, instead of waiting like you did between bottle 3 and 4. We are a very demanding followers, aren't we?! 😂

    It's worth mentioning that Charles Shaw wine is more commonly known as "Two Buck Chuck." That is actually a term of endearment rather than derision, since the wines are remarkably decent given their price. Edit: Apologies- I just saw that you mention this at the very end of the video.

    The Barolo is after all a 26 year old wine, so $60 sound like a good price unless the wine is seriously over the hill. Did you enjoy the wine, or do you feel that it should have been drunk several years ago?
