Master Life's Challenges with Tai Chi: The Power of Embracing Resistance

Have you ever worked hard to prepare for something you think is a big deal, only to find it really difficult to succeed? Sometimes the intensity with which we face a challenge only affirms and amplifies the difficulty and rigidity of the obstacle.
On the other hand, have you ever tried to deflect a problem, yet find it unavoidable? This is because when our mentality is tainted by denial, we cannot engage reality completely with our full influence.
When you rise above denial, and completely accept reality, you can begin to really direct it. Think of a challenge in your life... what do you seek that lays beyond struggling, and completely outside of denial?
In Tai Chi, and your mindset like this, and alongside your mastery of intent and energy, gives you real freedom in your life. And what difference would it make for you, to feel free, like this?

Thank you! And as you become free of what you resist, consider, what will you become aware of now, that will be a new resource for your growth? And where can your attention go, that this energy and resource support, that can become your new goal and total success? Cheers!

I trained in aikido for about 15 years and I practiced psychotherapy for over 40. I had a fundamental principle--blend before leading. Much like here--yielding/emptiness before pushing.

That's a fantastic background you have! How have you noticed your aikido to help your psychotherapy, and vice versa?

You are a very good teacher. I like your idea of not paying attention to the bones and joints and focusing on the surface. The form does the work of developing the alignment but focusing on the tissues makes so much sense. Its was already right there and i didn’t see it. I dont develop Ting Jin only on the boney points of my body. "Listen throught the elbow, knucles and forehead" hahaha. Thanks for angling the mirror so thst i could see myself a little more clearly

Thank you! The concept of using your elbow intent to redirect their force before it enters your body is a secret teaching passed down by the Yang Jianhou - Yang Shaohou lineage. It is what they stated to be the purpose of the Zhou (Elbow) energy, guiding with the intention of the elbow, and Kao (Leaning) energy, leaving intention and energy on the surface. The form does the work guided by your Yi (Intention). I'm glad I was able to illustrate this concept that made it easy for you to understand! I wonder how your Tai Chi will evolve now that you have a deeper understanding of Intent and these energies! 🙏☯️

Another great video and discussion/demonstration. I really like how you have other people demonstrate the skill to show that it is accessible to do. Thank you.

Yes! Because their own experience is the best teacher. And that means when they directly experience what is possible, it opens the door to new feelings. New feelings open the door to new perspective. And new perspectives opens the door to new possibilities!

Thank you! I'm happy to share with people why we enjoy Tai Chi. Because there's something beyond combat, beyond winning, and even beyond relaxation, that is totally satisfying about Tai Chi practice. And that's something I hope to convey! 🙏

Very nice explanation! My teacher put our backs to a wall, punch us in the gut and tell us “remain song and expand your yi” 😅

Hahahaha! Did that work?? When I was learning and I couldn't song and relax my arms enough, my teacher made me do 200 pushups. And then he said "yes now your arms are ready to do Tai Chi" That does work btw. 😆

@@phoenixmountaintaichi It did for me lol. I would always lose focus of my chi in sparring when I was about to be hit. The wall training helped me accept that sometimes I will get hit but that’s no reason to not have my mind disciplined. That all being said I think I’ll adopt your approach for teaching this lesson haha.

I have been working on that to learn how to catch punches using the same method. I have noticed that the lighter energy I use the further the opponent is expelled.

Right! When your movement is too heavy it gives them a path to resist. Try doing it with no resistance, even though it seems like it would not stop them, and see what happens!
