    I'm new to this and struggling to balance my water flow and co2 distribution in a small, 10g tank. Started with a hob bio wheel filter which didn't create enough flow and too much surface agitation. Got an internal filter and placed the diffuser under the intake which broke the bubbles down to a smaller size. Much better distribution as well because my drop checker went from a dark green, to a lime green. Problem was that set up was I had no surface agitation and I came home to dead fish. I added an air stone on a timer to come on when the lights go out. My co2 is set on a timer as well with the same timing you mentioned. Just trying to find the right combination!

  • @TheWaterBox

    @TheWaterBox

    2 жыл бұрын

    Always have surface agitation, or rather, movement. What I would do is leave the co2 where it's at and just run the air stone constantly.

    Hello mr. Chow! First off awesome videos! Subscribed after one video haha. I have a question about the chart you mentioned. Reading the co2 lvl is in ppm..but how does this translate to bubbles per min? For example for me I have a Kh of 4, Gh of 9 and Ph of about 6.8/6.9

  • @TheWaterBox

    @TheWaterBox

    5 жыл бұрын

    You have to really figure it out over time. Start at one bubble per second and go a few days taking readings. Then adjust from there. There's no real magical number mainly because the "absorb" rate of Co2 in your tank is related to plant load, water temp, pressure in your tank, the make up of your water... etc.

    is KH really that important for plants as most plants are said to grow better in very soft water Iv had no ph swings because of low Alkilinity/kh in my tank and iv only got 1 drop on API test kit And is there a Pen you can buy for checking your co2 regular like you can buy to do your ph and TDS

  • @TheWaterBox

    @TheWaterBox

    5 жыл бұрын

    SUPPOSEDLY, the lower the KH, the easier plants can use nutrients but that's all. But your plants will grow fine as long as you are providing a good dosing regiment regardless of KH and everything else is plenty that the plants need to grow Just watch out for any PH swing that might come with low alkalinity waters. It just comes easier at such soft waters. What is the name of the Co2 Pen meter you're talking about? I cant find one anywhere that measure Co2 in water.

    Best way to set co2. Turn up every 2-3 hours until co2 drop checker is yellow for a high light tank. Lime green should be ok for medium to lower light tanks. Id say pearling indicates the plant is in "max growth mode" for lack of better terms.

    On that kh/ph/co2 chart what does the kh line represent? Is it the drops it takes to turn yellow? How do you know how much ppm co2 you have in your aquarium? Should i use an aerator with a co2 system? I'm new to planted tanks and want to get a co2 system. I'm trying to do as much research as I can but the more I do the more I'm getting confused. Lol! I have a standard 55g with swords, bacopa, ludwigia, java ferns, jungle val and octopus plant. Great video series!

  • @TheWaterBox

    Yes, the KH line is the "amount" of drops it takes to turn yellow which is the number of your reading in the typical KH test. You should always use some kinda of diffuer for co2 otherwise, it's just going to bubble to the top and leave your tank.

    @@TheWaterBox In your opinion do you think I really need co2? I have a standard 55g, I don't think my plants are high tech, my light is probably medium, standard gravel for substrate but use root tabs and liquid ferts. My plants look good and I have a couple of nerite snails and a bristle nose so my algae is not an issue. I have a sponge filter and a canister.

  • @TheWaterBox

    @@st85100 With the plants you have, probably not but if you have a great balance going in your tank your plants should be healthy. The won't grow as fast or as lush. But I am an advocate of Co2 as the effects on plants can be very advantageous. But it's ok if you don't and if you don't the best trick to balancing the tank with enough Co2 for your plants to do well is to make sure the surface of your water has nice calm ripples. This help promote gas exchange promoting o2 and co2 in your water column. Just don't make a roaring rapids water park in your tank. Small ripples created from your filter outtake will work fine.

    Hello! In this video you state that you should start your co2 at 1 bubble per second but in the "dry start method" video you suggest you should blast your co2 after flooding (flood, drain, flood, drain, flood...drain, thanks for the tip). Are we starting at 1 bubble per second strictly because of the fish? Or is it bad to blast co2 for a day or two immediately after flooding?

  • @TheWaterBox

    @TheWaterBox

    1 bps as a general sense. When DSMing and your flood your tank, you usually won't have fish in your tank yet, so you blast the co2. If you do have fish then don't do that.

    So the trade off by using a wave maker whilst CO2 is running, is a greater loss of CO2 through the surface of the water, but better distribution of CO2 throughout the tank and potentially more time for the bubbles to completely diffuse in the water before sitting at the water surface. What to do 🤔

  • @TheWaterBox

    @TheWaterBox

    2 жыл бұрын

    I always go with dealing with the minor loss. It's so minimal in my opinion but just try it and see how much you use up in you tank. If it means you have to fill it up 2 weeks earlier than usual, then it might be worth it to you.

    11:00 I think a caveat should be made that this chart may not be a reliable way to measure ppm due to the assumptions being made (CO2 + KH isn't the only thing that affects PH). Perhaps for the majority of people this chart would be appropriate, but I think it's better to be used in combination with other methods in order to measure CO2 levels.

    My tank with co2 gassed off sits at about a 7.4-7.6 pH. With full co2 saturation, it goes down to about 6.2-6.4 pH. My dKH is 3 degrees. All measurements taken with the API test kits for simplicity and consistency. According to the charts, that should put my co2 saturation anywhere from 35.8-56.8 ppm. However none of my fish show signs of stress, I even have German rams spawning (I don't save the eggs or fry, but I know they're happy). The reason being is having a good amount of surface agitation with a spray bar connected to my canister filter. It allows for a good exchange of gases so the oxygen levels can stay high, along with the plants photosynthesizing which also produces lots of oxygen. I have pretty much stopped relying on my drop checker because the damn thing's suction cup kept failing lol

    Using the PH table is a good way to calibrate your CO2 concentrations. Working with a PH value versus looking for a certain color to estimate CO2 levels is easier to do. You can purchase a quality PH pen (calibrated) to help you get you more precise readings.

  • @varanidguy

    @varanidguy

    Thanks for the comment, Portal. I have a pH pen but it needs to be calibrated, which is why I've resorted to the API kit for now. Calibration solution is on order as of today, thanks for the reminder!

  • @portalmasterry6765

    @portalmasterry6765

    5 жыл бұрын

    The API titration kit is inaccurate. Use the pen and make sure you calibrate often since the low-quality pens lose calibration pretty easily. I personally use an Apex system and a hand-held Hanna PH meter to monitor my PH levels constantly until I hit the desired PH. It takes time but you figure this out then the next step is running your CO2 24/7. Once you master this then out you'll be trimming almost every other week and you can then grow some really hard plants like Ludwigia Pantanal.

    there's actually three ways to measure the co2 in your tank but the third option costs $2500-$3000 and is not feasible for the average joe. It's an device used in the carbonated drinks industry to measure the dissolved co2 in liquids. There two versions of it, one that measures levels in liquids in a vessel of some type like a bottle or in our case, the tank. The other measures in-line as the liquid flows through tubing. Each version comes in 3 models, one for co2 only, one for o2 only and one for both co2 and o2.

    You're running light 24? You mean the finnex 24/7 right? Not running it 24 hours? I'd cut down the intensity by 30%. Is that 1 pump per 20g per day? What I'm suggesting you do is to cut down the light and fert until you can get c02 back meaning we're just going to slow down the growth. That's really all you're doing this way there's not an over abundance of light/nutrient for algae blooms. It won't kill your plants rather they just grow slower. But you only need to do that if it's just for a few days. If it's more then I would suggest cutting back on fert and light.
