Young people need translation?

I renege on my previous comment but after listening from start to finish this was quite a horrific performance. Terrible tempo fluctuations, uneven hands due to rushing, hitting the wrong consecutive chords. I get it being judged under pressure but she was focusing too much on just getting the notes right.

Je n'ai rien contre la personne elle-même du traducteur, qui est certainement très sympathique, mais il n'est pas compétent pour ce rôle : il prend trop de place, reformule à sa façon, parle pendant que les artistes parlent, traduit même quand c'est inutile, a des tics de langages, se permet de prendre un ton de moquerie vis-à-vis des élèves. Il est clair que tout cela n'est pas de la méchanceté, mais une habitude d'être qui n'est pas adaptée à la situation complexe du maître, l'élève et le public. Il faut trouver quelqu'un d'autre car cela diminue fortement la qualité du contenu. Par exemple, un musicien qui se concentrerait uniquement sur la qualité de la communication entre l'élève et le maître. En général, ces artistes sont suffisamment expressifs pour que le public comprenne même sans traduction et ce n'est pas possible pour l'élève d'écouter le maître en imaginant ce qu'il ou elle doit réaliser, puis se faire arrêter pour que le public comprenne et repartir ensuite. I find that Kovacevich is very nice and tries to take the students exactly where they are without despise ! The student are also very brave to try to show their best.

This is a horrific masterclass. Patronising. Mistakes makes a performance all the more endearing.

I find him very respectful, trying to help them for their future career and trying to get some feedback on what they want, think or understand. Why do you say such things ?

@@Faune13 Glen Gould would be turning on his grave at this kind of stuff. These pianists don't need the help as the masterclasses are not insightful. Barenboims masterclasses are of a lot better quality as he also engages the audience. This is just Schiff yet again performing.

He’s a great pianist,and I’m his fans for a long time, but he’s a lousy teacher, I must say!

The first one at least (haven't seen/heard the others) is a lousy student. She needs a teacher who teachers her the basics.

​@@bertuspieters4154 She is just a student ! And you don't know the circonstances of her participation, or her perspectives in life, or the whole context of this masterclass. However, I totally agree with you that the level of the students and of the organisation doesn't match the one of Kovacevich. But he is kind enough to make the best out of it. I still find it really interesting to hear what he has to say in this situation !
