My G2 300 30" shaft has 1,200 hrs on it. It replaced a Yamaha F300 that blew at around 900 hours (the timing belt broke, valves collided with pistons and there it went). Still problem-free with my G2. You won't find a video of me bitching about my Yamaha that blew. I don't get why people bitch so much if they have a problem with Evinrude, but when it happens with a Yamaha they just keep silent. It's a weird phenomenon that I've been noticing for years now.

the timing belt went? was it and the tensioner not checked when you took it to the dealer for service? the tensioner could easily be damaged if you install it incorrectly. these belts are the same as on your car. they don't just suddenly break that early for no reason... i've worked on these for 8 years and this only happens when someone makes a mistake

You raise interesting points but I don't understand some of them, and I watched 1-4 of your videos. You bought two used engines with 32 hours on them. You ran them to 135 or so hours. You said they ran on 11 cylinders. That must mean one ran on 6 and one ran on 5. Tear down showed the bad cylinder ran for maybe 5 hours of the total. Why did you run a bad engine for 130 hours knowing it wasn't right? I am aware you had problems on the ocean. This also means the first owner had 27 hours of problems with one of them before you bought it from him. The red flag to me is why did someone sell them with so little use on it unless he was losing his house, and why did you buy it unless cost was you main criteria? Aside from Evinrude not having a work performed clearhouse system, you could have supplied the work order copies and receipts for the first and all subsequent work and repair performed to all subsequent mechanics. As for losing now $300,000, why didn't you just suck it up and buy two new engines of another brand? For maybe $40k you would have been back in business. The law requires you to mitigate your damages. You can't just let them pile up if you can stop the loss just because someone else may first have been at fault. I have not read Evinrude's warranty but I assume it is assignable or transferable. When the warranty person could not find that you had a warranty, you could have sent a copy of your receipt for the sale, etc., along with a notarized statement that what you sent to Evinrude was a true copy. The statement that it will take 10 years before correct computer codes are written also doesn't sound right at all. Auto companies have tech centers with large staffs that write such codes for cars, trucks, etc., which are far more complex than anything than Evinrude makes. Those guys also work in countless other industries in the USA doing the same work for after market and direct supplier companies. In short, they are easy to find. I have been a lawyer 36 years, a business owner longer than that, and have built motorcycles, cars, etc., since I was 19. One of my long term clients writes and troubleshoot such codes at the GM Tech Center in Michigan. If nothing else, I would have spent an additional $40k on two new engines the minute I learned I was facing a $300,000 loss if I didn't. Boats are relatively new to me and I don't know why both engines stopped at the same time when one hit on all six cylinders. Perhaps your boat' s electronics don't allow you to run one engine at a time, which seems like a common sense emergency measure if the other fails. Finally, I have since watched other KZread videos, one by a deep sea fisherman near New Zealand who claims 1,000 hours on his 300hp G2 with virtually zero problems, and other with similar statements. For the most part auto companies and other manufacturers, which I assume includes Evinrude, do not predominantly make lemons and they want to have happy customers. But that does not mean dealership mechanics stand around all day with nothing to do. Your experience is unfortunate, and I have had my share of warranty problems now and then, but Evinrude is still standing with many customers who claim to be well satisfied with their products. Good luck, but you can't recover collateral damages/losses without a specific agreement with Evinrude that allows it. At the same time, it all sounds like my brother in law, who gets his legal knowledge from the internet, and then tells me I don't know what I am talking about when I point out the answer to his legal question, when he does not realize that he isn't asking the question that matches his actual problem. BTW, I don't work for Evinrude nor do I own any of their products. It's not that I dislike them, I have not yet bought any outboard engine. If all I was offered was a butt spliced spark plug wire on warranty, I would have paid for a new one myself, since my ass, NOT theirs was cruising the ocean with it. And don't you first check weather reports? Good luck and let's hope it works out for you.

Thoney is not Crazy, sometimes people think you are when they cant handle or believe the truth. Ok I admit I thought or should I say hoped he was a little over the top when I watched the videos until my little nightmare started. In 2018, I bought a Robalo R222 with a 250 G2 H.O. (high output) motor. Although my story may seem light compared to Thoney's, what he said rang a bell that resonated with my experience and my biggest fear is what's to come. Despite being warned and arguing like a fool with people on the Robalo forum I insisted on going with a G2, after all I had a 10 yr warranty. I was a die hard Evinrude guy based on bullet proof Evinrudes I owned in the past. I even paid $1250 extra to have motor installed at dealer and shipped from Wisconsin, Racine Riverside Dealer to L.A. as Robalo factory and my local dealer would not install motor, even though it was an unadvertised option for Robalo boats. Made no sense, same physical motor and rigging just different software just because it was an H.O., but I wont bore you with the pain I went through to get it. I have 250 hours on motor and had no issues until recently my ignition starting intermittently shorting out. I checked the whole electrical and bought new batteries, in that process I also noticed the heads on my motor were leaking. I took it to a certified repair shop about 50 miles away which there aren't many near L.A. in Costa Mesa. Tech/owner said there is a recall on the ignition, which I wasn't notified of and he said sometimes the heads are not properly torqued and leak. He repaired the leaking head and ignition under warranty and I paid for new plugs.. When I picked up my boat 4 weeks later waiting for parts and got it home I noticed dirt grease and some sort of sticky dried caulk type material on lower unit, despite bringing the boat to him washed and polished. This was just a little irritating until II noticed the cowling was also askew and had an extra 1/2" gap in the seem where the cowling pieces meet. I called the tech and drug boat back 50 miles thinking maybe he forgot to tighten screws or something, he tinkered with it for another hour and finally said the plastic parts on these motors are poorly designed and there's nothing he can do. He opened the motor and showed me where many of the plastic screw anchor points were cracked and said this is common, I said if you know that you should have people sign a waiver warning them, Like Thoney said cheap plastic. I told the tech to order new parts to make it right and he said I don't even think that will fix it. Instead of apologizing, he said are you gonna make a big deal out of a little 1/8" gap as if it was my fault. Maybe I'm crazy but you go spend over 80k on a boat that you take pride in caring for and have it returned this way and see how u feel. This pissed me off and I called Evinrude thinking they would stand behind their product and make it right. I reached a Team Leader named Ann Moriarty what a piece of work, she said in the most your S.O.L tone I'm sorry but the repair center is independent and there's nothing we can do unless it's a warranty issue. I dared not ask if the cowlings cracking are under warranty so I asked for her manager and was surprised she refused to give it to me and said the answer will be the same and the only thing I can do is take a complaint with a good luck with that tone. Almost as an afterthought she took the complaint and gave me a case number, which I haven't heard back from yet. The tech reluctantly said he would order parts from Evinrude but it would take a while, so I don't have much confidence that this will have an ok ending at all. On another note a buddy of mine just got 2, 2019 G2 300 motors replaced by Evinrude after his mechanic wrote a book on chronic problems only to have one of the new motors blow up on a 30 mile trip to Catalina. He said he's done with Evinrude and will sell his rig at a loss. So here I am with clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right and stuck between Evinrude and the repair center. I feel like I'm playing musical chairs and Evinrude and the repair shop get to remain seated. So don't hate the messenger I applaud Thoney for warning people at this point, I don't know why anyone would even buy a used G2 at this point I wouldnt. Evinrude seems to be in free fall mode at this point.

I have had a 2007 250 E-Tec for about 7 years. I bought it second hand and after looking at the computer data, they always had water in the fuel issues. In the 7 years that I have owned the engine it has always gotten me back to the dock. My only issue is I have lost 2 injectors and that is most likely from the life it had before me. Under $2,000 in repairs over 7 years and always getting me back to the dock. Not bad for a second hand motor. I really think that any of the new outboards out there are pretty good products. Why haven't you put your Yami's on yet. 300,000 could buy you like 10 of them? Nice Hat.

I have a Evinrude G2 for 3 years and have had three problems. All was my fault in not reading the manual completely. It's a new type of engine and most old school boaters will give you wrong information on this engine. Read the manual. My only gripe with BRP is not enough warning stickers on the motor regards to engine flushing which most will have their problems at.

Sup 839 Exactly! I’m a captain and I would not dream of taking clients on a trip with a sick motor even if you have two. One reason is that it does put more stress on the good motor while also further harming a sick one. The second is what costs more, a blown motor or a lost trip? The blown motor could cause many more lost trips as well. This guy is a joke. You know what voids warranties...running one for hours after it throws a code.

Quite a few professional, top tier Bass tournament fishermen including, Scott Martin, Andy Morgan, Brian Thrift, Jacob Wheeler, all ran G2 motors, until, Evinrude dropped support at tournaments, so, they had no choice but to find other options. The G2's were known to be just as reliable as any other major manufacturer, and were also known to be some of the fastest when used on the bass boats they were installed on. If they weren't reliable, no WINNING pro fisherman in his right mind would have chosen that brand, as word of mouth gets around VERY quickly about bad products in that circle. Your warranty issues sound like issues that should have been investigated better when you purchased those motors used. And as far as the "double failure" , that sounds like more of a rigging issue than anything else, as there should be no way 2 motors fail at exactly the same time, and then would restart, unless there was some kind of controller glitch, or electrical powering issue, which, probably caused both motors to shut down just to protect themselves from further damage. All of this is a moot point though, as Evinrude basically didn't know how to compete in the 4 stroke market, and although produced a seemingly competitive and high enough quality product, they couldn't overcome the "stigma" associated with the "polluting, smoking 2 stroke motor" that most people were used to from previous generations of 2 stroke motor design, and the tech that enabled them to overcome the pollution and other issues that older 2 stroke designs had, was costly to develop and produce. OH, and why.. run a motor (when you have 2) with a bad cylinder? You are risking more damage from either a shortage of fuel from an injector system failure, which means possible damage due to lack of fuel and lubrication, OR, a build up of deposits from unburnt and compressed fuel that will also cause damage. The fact you kept on running it would be questioned by the mechanic inspecting it when he pulled data, and that might shut down any warranty claim on it as well. Just sounds like a poor decision by the owner to do this. Most 4 stroke manufactures also stepped up their game, making motors of the same HP that weigh as little as Evinrude's previously lighter weight per HP offerings, so, at that point, it was also another blow to BRP's sales of these items. It is sad that things went this way, as competition usually improves those companies that are involved, but it looks like Merc walked away with the trophy for the major market share of new larger HP outboards.

One comment: You know you have a problem with one engine and you go out anyway? I guess common sense is not part of your daily exploits.

Mercury Optimax is a true piece of shit as well my friend. How do you think they got the name Poptimax? I live in a town where the only certified dealership sells Mercury. The first Yamaha I bought made 2500 hrs. w/o any problems. Sure I would do preventative maintenance like WP Impellars, fuelfilters, spark plugs. Optimax lasted 600 hrs. spent thousands on parts and labor and it still exploded. I don't care how much you have to spend, get your self a Yamaha! Mercury is pure horse shit.

Because of this nightmare, I'm going to avoid the pitfall of buying a Evinrude.

For every person who stops buying from company x and goes to company y, there is another person who stopped buying from company y and went to company x. If Yamaha, Mercury, Evinrude, or pick whoever you want, were uniformly bad, they would have been out of business years ago.

I didn't see that Evinrude went out of business yet and I also haven't noticed recalls, class action lawsuits, etc., against them as well. If another person had a bad experience, in their view, with Mercury or Yamaha, would you also avoid them?

I own the same motor but I don't have an attitude problem like this guy. This guy is just the worst case of human being . Yeah it's not super reliable mostly because of environmental restrictions when it comes to be R P and her snowmobiles. Do you want the most reliable motor out there everybody says Yamaha I'm now switching that opinion to mercury 100%

I would never warranty a thing if you brought it to me with issues then decided in your own that “O it’ll be fine” you might have not don’t anything wrong. I doubt it. But the thing that you absolutely did wrong was not having it looked at when the issue happened. I don’t care if it’s a honda, Merc yammer or zuk. That’s plain asking for trouble sir.

What a fool if you are losing $300,000 in 7 months why didn't you simply buy new engines after the very first month. Your numbers don't stack up.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. This is the dumbest, most dramatic complaining about a motor malfunctioning that I have ever heard. I know people with every make that have had major problems. They all had them taken care of by the manufacturer under warranty, or serviced and fixed. I think you have more issues than your motors. Also, I know many happy G2 owners. Get a life.

I can’t believe you ran a motor for over 100hours and knew that it was not running right and your really complaining, I have had zero problems with my 2015 E-tech, because I know how to do simple maintenance, and know that if there is a problem to cut it and fix it.
