Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and the next generation | Alex Cui | TEDxYouth@UTS
With Massive Open Online Courses, the big question still remains: How far will MOOCs go in augmenting traditional university teaching? Will it revolutionize the way students learn? To be continued in The Next Chapter…
lex Cui is a grade 10 student at UTS with a passion to question. As a digital native, he likes to think about the potential of the emerging technologies that are disrupting our social lives, education, and careers. He’s working on the gamification of global issues education with the Actout, an organisation he co-founded. Now, he’s questioning the idea that Massive Open Online Courses will revolutionize the way students experience higher education. By dislodging university courses from the lecture hall to the laptop, they promise to democratize education for anybody with an internet connection.

fr tho 😂
I recently started the free calculus one course on the coursera app on my android phone. It has been super easy to navigate and while they havent integrated the quizzes into the app yet it has been no trouble since it pops it up in your browser for you when you get too that point. There is no time limit, you learn at your own pace. I watched an 11min lecture one day and a 4min one a couple days later and you can always go back if you need a refresher. So far its been free! I might have to get back to you when I take a calc course this fall to see how much it actually prepared me for it.
The challenge will be getting these certificates recognised by employers. Also, as a teacher, how much time will I spend checking what a student has listened to and understood. Frankly, it would be easier for me to watch a face in a classroom. The advantage is for remote and isolated students, but will teachers volunteer their time?
