Massive Mistakes in Make Up Air for Homes

Ғылым және технология

After having several clients and colleagues majorly underestimate the amount of dampered make up ducts needed to relieve the suction pressure of kitchen fans on an airtight home, I decided we need to talk about this again. Here's the ins and outs of Broan's Make Up Air Damper Calculator (at www.broan-nutone.com/en-us/ho..., and how weird it turns out if you use SIMPLIFIED inputs instead of DETAILED inputs.

We were lucky we built our house after you did the video on makeup air in your own home. Putting the make up air vent right above the range hood worked best for us and then use a infinite varriable intake fan and manometer to get the setting right. Im glad we saw it because originally we planned to cut a big hole in the floor under the range hood and run it through our foundation. Much easier to do and make changes in the conditioned attic.

Really useful, and perfect timing. Building an 1.5 ACH home and trying to figure out the best solution for makeup air for a gas range. Thanks so much !

Sam Before you buy the gas range test drive an induction. It will heat faster, hotter respond faster and nothing gets burned on the outside of a pan.

That is a wild difference. So should the idea of a passive MUA system be eliminated from the conversation in the context of energy efficient homes, and only discuss powered MUA systems?

I think so, if you build like Joel does. But if it's a big fat house that's only 4 ach50, you might be fine. Math will tell.

You mentioned dryer vent. Are you recommending the use of make up air when the dryer is on? Can the dryer make up air be accomplished with ERV instead? Thanks!

Any 1-way exhaust becomes a problem, the dryer just happens to be overlooked in many cases. No, ERVs cannot unbalance enough to provide 150 cfm more on one side than the other- many of them are 150 cfm max.

Great video, I’m searching for any videos on the exhaust portion of MU air (the origination of the need of MU air) and found this video. I’ve noticed it is extremely rare to find information on appropriate exhaust systems (exhaust vents) through the roof. Do you have any videos on those (ie moving 700+CFM without constraint outside through a roof. )

Great video on the ‘exhaust’ system. However I was specifically referring to the transition between the inside to the outside (roof vs wall). Commonly referred to as a GRV /Galvanized roof vent. I’ve noticed these ‘gooseneck’ type products or similar do not seem to be adequate with respect to aerodynamic pressure drop (they seem to restrict). Do you have a video of transitions outside of the home (last part of exhaust) either through wall or roof? Again thank you in advance.

I have a tight 1972 bungalow, 1.24ach. Im thinking to put in a mua unit because with 2 kids its not rare that the clothes driver and 2 bathroom exhaust fans are running at the sametime

Most of the huge ranges/ hoods are bought by people that almost never cook and when they do the hood is never turned on. My guess is 95% of the big hoods will get scraped with less than 25 hours of run time.
