Genoese crossbowmen were indeed ichonic almost every young man of the city was conscript there. They were probably the best trained and equipped militia of the time.

I still can't not laugh whenever Apollo talks about the doge of Venice

I love how one side brawls while the other armies just sit and wait, then once that small battle finishes, the other side engages, then its all out fight fest and each army starts its march forward. Very cool battle.

Having more than two cav per army is silly, especially in big land battles, because no one ever uses them right. They're not able to micro their army and the cav at the same time so you end up with everyone's cav going to one flank and fighting there until they die, while the rest of the army sits still or moves at a snails pace. Not how shock cav is supposed to be used at all. Also, too many rely on their cav for nothing more than holding flanks.

When I use shock cav, I charge them into the rear or flank of the enemy, pull them back, charge again, then repeat that process until they're shattered.

Actually, cavalry most often engaged other cavalry in actual battles. When they would engage infantry "properly" as you say, from the flank, if such an opportunity would arise, it would usually be devastating.

Gear Hawk That's exactly it. Unless you overuse the slow speed (which you can't use in multiplayer battles) micro-managing more than 2 cavalry is a very hard challenge. However,in the campaign, if you play with slow speed (kind of silly but whatever) , mass cavalry do wonders. I actually beat 3 entire armies of persians (so lots of spears and archers) who came to Attack my hunnic horde one after another in the same turn. And I had just lot of crappy horse archers with cheap light cav and just two heavy spear units to contain the infantry.

Adrian Ahlberg: Well, like I'd be able for micro'n lots of cav and an army on a multiplayer battle, but few I know can too. So unless they CAN, they shouldn't be playing with so much, it makes the battle really shit. Also I think people overestimate cav. Spending money on a solid infantry army is more important than on cav. I've beaten huge armies of cav being supported by lots of infantry, because cav can never be the backbone of your army.

The red army was too cautious in their aggression and under committed during both flank engagements, leaving them to be slowly picked apart. I think they should have charged the yellow heavy infantry with their shock cav at 18:05 and then moved up their spears to engage the enemy cav if they intercepted.

24993 v 25000 is a pretty big battle for medival times. Even for XVI century to early XVIII century. later tho, 25 thousand v 25 thousand was concidered a large bar fight.

damn I have to say this is probably one of my favorite battles just because of all the men pouring in from each side and all the colors blending in while there's a brutal scene under the mass of bodies with dead soldiers and blood then at the same time how you mentioned it was really a show of strength of which soldier would come out on top based on skill and decision another thing I liked is how the farther right you got down the line of men how it was pretty much peaceful at first and you could hear the background of the left sides fight just wondering when you will be sent in to attack as you and your enemy waits for one anothers move to commence

People complain about short battles while not considering how small the armies in the game compared to actual historical battles (A Roman legion was the largest unit of the Roman army involving from 3000 men in early times to over 5200 men in imperial times)

At the beginning that massive cav battle, I shall we easy hammer and anvil my pants when all those cav went into battle.

More sieges! Land battles seem to just get so crazy at times, it is hard to cover everything, as well as it is not fun when you have massive blobs of troops fighting it out for ages. In siege battles however, you see a lot more strategy and conservation of troops, allowing you to cover every part of a battle while still staying organized on every flank. Hope to see more 1212 in the future!

GlazedGamer Not if you use different scenarios, rules and factions, like a reinforcement siege. A defender army outside forces attackers to be aggressive and makes the siege go a lot faster. it's small things that make a siege more interesting

One feature of the game that I really wish could be possible is, like in Epic Battle Simulator, where you can select a single unit of infantry in the battle say and actually get into the action. Then switch back out to strategy mode again once dead or just to observe the rest of the army. That would be so good!

I once tried hiding handgunners in a forest on my flank and held fire until they were halfway into the firing range, By the god's it was a glorious massacre.

Screw being a foot soldier during that huge cav battle, you'd just be trampled on by the enemy and your teammates.

I thought of an alternate History for this battle: the Mongols invaded and subjected eastern Europe, Italy, and Southern France. They may be able to be allies by the Kingdom of Jerusalem because they were religiously tolerant. The Germans, French, Sapanish, and the remianing Genoese Forces Have United to fight the oncoming horde. This Battle probably took place in the valley between the Massif central and the Alps at the end of the Rhone river

People should play eastern factions or the mongols more in open battle. Their speed is too much for western nights the arrows shred heavy infantry. Barely any total war players can pull off hit a run its a huge weakness in the community.

7:02 Apollo, of course a Total War battle is small compared to a real life battle. If it was as big as a real battle, the game would lag like fuck and crash itself until your computer dies permanently. The units, like Condottieri, are scaled down, and so in real life, this battle of 15000 men would be a massive battle, with maybe even hundreds of thousands of men fighting. I mean, the size of the battle depends on the actual power of its participants, and countries like Sicily or Saxony weren't called powerhouses back then, or ever were (yeah, you can give it to Otto the Great for winning the Battle of Lechfeld, but that was more Germany-wide than just Saxony, and you can praise the Normans for conquering all of Sicily, but their armies weren't that big either).

Red team should have pulled reserves from the flanks to punch through the center of blue which was only protected by sword infantry. They could have divided the blue army in two. (that is when blue won the skirmish on reds right flank and bent around the red flank)

But then again Blue might have countered a divide in their center with the extra cav force they had so the center assault could have just been a failure. From the start blue had a superior cav force (size and likely quality) but the bend blue made was risky especially with a center only protected by sword (literally like 5-6 regiments of sword infantry which had sizeable gaps in between) Red force did make an assault but bunched up on Blues right flank rather then attack the whole thing.

You know the Mongols did have an alliance with the kingdom of Jerusalem to attack more pressing enemies, so this battle could be somewhat historically accurate :P

using crossbows aggresively is a totally viable tactic!

Apolo do the eagle. The eagle is a good movie w/ Rome and the druids

at about 25 mins they commit full health crossbows with full ammo into melee on purpose. It triggered me hard. More than one unit too.
