Фильм және анимация

On the 2nd of September, 2014, a massive chunk of ice calved off of the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska. We were lucky enough to catch it on film.

When you're that close and you see/feel something like that is about to happen, you should run like hell. You never know if that is going to set off a large wave (and sweep you in to the icy water to your deaths) OR there is a glacial lake the fracture will set loose that will, once again set loose and take you to an icy death. Don't mess with glaciers - they are deadly

@@roylavecchia1436 I would presume he is suggesting that this is related to rising temperatures, hense it's sad that this maybe a result of possibly human impact on the planet. We all know that glaciers do this naturally, and some glaciers are still growing in size. But, accross the board, glaciers are receding big time. I don't know if Global Warming is created by humans or a natural event. But, I found it interesting to learn recently that 60 million years ago there was no ice on either poles.

In the mid-70s, I lived in Petersburg Alaska. When an iceberg would ground itself at low tide I'd go down with my rifle and a couple of buckets to collect ice for drinks. When I'd put a couple rounds into the ice it would shatter like safety glass and I could scoop up pieces about the size of golfballs, the color was mesmerizing. Drop one or two in a drink and they would last forever, something to do with being so compressed I suspect, not something that ice crunchers should bite on. Probably the cleanest water on the planet, sequester from the water cycle for potentially hundreds of thousands of years... just waiting to splash down in my Cuba Libre. Stay safe.

@Bruce strkland When I was at Mendenhall Glacier a friend operates the boats that contract with the cruise line to take passengers to the glacier. We were in 30 ft. boats and were very close to the glacier. The glacier cracked as loud as cannon fire. When the calving happened it was amazing ( yes, an overused word, but it was ). The boat we were on was pushed like a cork as we sped away. Wow ! My friend has lived in Juneau 15 years and said the glacier has been doing this since he has been there. The volume of the glacier replenishes every winter. He worked as a liaison between the Government and the fishermen, had his own fishing business before he retired and took the helm of the sightseeing operation.
