MASSIVE closet declutter after seasonal color analysis! Declutter with me

Download OPENWARDROBE for free and build your capsules much more easily!
For iPhone: apps.apple.com/us/app/openwar...
For Android: play.google.com/store/apps/de...
After my seasonal color analysis, I was in desperate need of a massive closet declutter. Many of the items in my wardrobe are no longer working, and some of them I’ve held on to for way too long. I wanted to continue to build my colorful capsule wardrobes, but my was in need of a good closet clean out.
As you may know I prefer the Marie Kondo style of decluttering, because it lets me see how much I actually have. I feel like I’m getting rid of half my clothes in this video! Event though I do dress from a minimalist wardrobe every season, it’s crazy to see how easily things accumulate if we do not keep up with it. I’m guilty of it myself!

Hello there! My name is Fernanda and I started putting together Capsule Wardrobes for Project 333 back in 2015. Since then, I have completely rearranged my closet and now have a minimalist wardrobe, and I dress from a base of 15-piece capsule wardrobes every season that I put together with a simple capsule wardrobe formula. Honestly it is great role modelling to keep a wardrobe that is just right for you and not encourage us to buy into the constant over consumption. Your colour analysis and capsule videos have inspired me to get creative and practical with my own wardrobe so that I can be more sustainable, save money and actually be happy with what I choose to keep and bring into my life.

A rule I heard recently is to ask myself, "Will I wear this item ten times in the next year?" If not, then it's not going home with me to hang in the closet. The other test I do is to figure out how much an item costs per wear. For example, I might spend $100 on a pair of leather booties but wear them every day for the next 100 days, so the booties cost $1 per wear. That's good value. But the $50 stiletoes that I wear only twice cost me $25 per wear. That's not good value.

It would definitely be easier for you to dye the dress a cranberry color than navy, since you're starting with an orangey base. Dying orange blue runs the risk of making a weird purple or brown. It may take a few tries, but I definitely think it would be easy to dye. Rit has some great fabric dyes that I love using.

YES. I LOVE dying clothes that arent the right color but the fit and fabric is good. I got 2 bulky cashmere sweaters for $35 and one was a light blue and perfect. But, the other was beige, so I dyed it black. Love them both now.

I feel more comfortable wearing dark colours even though I know that medium light colours suit me better. Also so much more is available in navy and black, I could wait 10 years for my shades of aqua and green to come into fashion and be available in the shops. I try to weed out the items that aren't my best colours but often they fit well and are so useful.

For the record, I kept a LOT of things that are not in my colors, mostly the things that will be difficult to replace. I think it's a process, and it will take years. Most of the things that went out are either things that are showing signs of wear AND are the wrong colors, things that I didn't love but I kept wearing just because that's what I had, and things that were gifted and didn't like.

Ooooh love openwardrobe, that's how I've found your channel! I'm still hoping on some extra features, such as a good tracking system what you do and don't wear, but just having your wardrobe on hand, making outfit combinations, and being able to upload a photo of something you'd like to buy to see how it would work with your clothes is pretty amazing! Hope you'll be succesfull with dyeing your beautiful dress! I've done it loads and is a great way to keep clothes in rotation for a longer period, or to change things up a bit without having to buy things new. I'd say: If you want a result that doesn't look like a DIY-job, follow the following steps: - really check the material, natural fibers work great, synthetic fibres don't take dye very well (I've done it in the past, and typically ended up with pastels). - don't deviate too much from the original colour, because stitching never takes dye. - in my experience, machine washable dye is the easiest way to create a uniform colouring (Dylon has pods that you simply toss in which is by far the easiest) but it does require cleaning your machine afterwards ( in mine, the rim usually collects dye )and perhaps make sure that the first washes you do afterwards are darks colours just to be on the safe side. Doing it by hand is doable as well, but you really have to stir a LOT, and have to think your plan through of how you're going to do it without making your house look like a Jackson Pollock, because believe me, that's easier than you think ;) It sounds like a lot of hassle, but it's a lot of fun as well! good luck!!

After my color analysis I wanted to do the same - Throw away most of my clothes 😅 The most important is color to our face even if the bottoms aren't in our color palette. In this case did you updated your fall capsule? My consultant told me that even if some color doesn't belong to my color pallete the most important is similarity e.g. I m a soft summer if I want to wear sth inapropriate the best is choose cobalt not orange. Have you heard about "sisters" in color analysis? If you are a clear winter your "sister" is clear spring. I am a soft summer and my "sister" is a soft autumn. There are some type as mine that I can take some colors from cool summer. So even if you are winter some warm color e.g. bright yellow can match you. I'd be careful with throwing away clothes.... It is better to look at color if it is bold or soft? The interesting youtube channel is "your color style" and you can find that most of consultants have a slightly diffrent color palettes. Now I am wondering about you service about capsule wardrobe - in my opinion is better to go on color analysis and then do a capsule wardrobe for a given season. Now I'm thinking if some of your clients don't have to get rid of clothes which don't match them. Are you gping to be a color consultant to have a better service?

@@vazq_Fernanda, sorry for taking so long to respond. I wanted to really play with the app before I answered you. Overall, I really like the app. Here are some of my pros and cons: Pros: it's easy to use, I like the fashion influencer content, the app has nice aesthetic/design, love the background removal tool, love the no item limit, like some of the stats like the color palette. Cons: limited categorization (I wish there were a way to tag/add fabric, fit, rating, etc.), I don't see a closet price even though we can add price to item, can't log daily outfit, I wish I could give an item a status like, "maybe pile" or "donate." Again, I really like the app overall. Especially how simple and pretty the design is. I also love that it features influencers that focus on wardrobe/style curation (I don't have to wade through endless KZread content to find new personal style channels to watch). I just wish it had a bigger emphasis on organization. I hope that helps.

I keep things for years and years, partly because older items are better quality than new fast fashion, and partly because as a petite, it's so hard for me to find anything that fits that I can't simply declutter in hopes of being able to replace things, because so many things are irreplaceable. When I declutter, it's mostly to get rid of things that are so destroyed or worn out that they simply aren't wearable anymore. The good news is, I have a pretty good idea of what works for my body in terms of colour and fit, and I tend to favour classic styles over trendy ones, so what I buy can be worn for years.

  • @vazq_Fernanda

This is so great though! I think that as we zero in on what works for us, we buy less, and we declutter less. A lot of what I let go of I've had since college (longer than 10 years) and I now know why it wasn't working, I think it's ok to allow ourselves to change. As for finding items that fit you - do you have a tailor? I get almost everything adjusted and it makes a big difference! You don't always have to find thing that fit you perfectly off-the rack.

Alterations like narrowing the shoulders, taking up the waist or the neckline, etc. can be REALLY expensive, and the finished item never quite looks right.

Would I be ashamed because I knew the fast fashion brand did not provide living wages or had inhumane work conditions and hours.? Would my purchase have considered them, and would I be able to feel like my purchase was ‘loving’ them. @@vazq_Fernanda 🙋Right👍I don't think you have too many clothes it just looks like it when it's piled on the bed. I've watched other videos that have 2 to 3 times that much. But... then again... when two maximalist get together you know what happens...😁😁😁 You ask what rule determines what stays or goes... 1) Modesty 2) Quality 3) Simplicity 4) Is there room to store it. My bedroom-converted-to-closet stays at full capacity / pieces go out only if something better comes in and needs a place. 5) Outfits are created and kept together. 6) Plenty of single pieces with potential are kept on hand for creating more outfits when needed.

Yes, in the same way that it is possible to have a clean home - but it requires constant upkeep, which not everyone is willing or has the time to do! And unlike home cleaning, it's hard to outsource.

What's one item in your closet that you've held onto for way longer than you should have, and why? For me, it may have been that brown & purple dress...

I've had a beautiful khaki button down shirt with spikes on the shoulders for way too long, finally decluttered it this month. I loved looking at it, I loved the idea of it and how "me" it looked, but never actually wore it because I simply never wear button down shirts 😅

The one in, one out rule always worked great for me, until I got hooked on online shopping during the pandemic. Now, I need a big declutter. I was hoping you would purge that orange print skirt, sorry but I think it’s hideous.

Hey it's not that every colour that is not your colour is going to look bad on you..... I understand why you're so keen to get rid of pieces not in your colour palette bcz when i discovered my colours i have done the same but now i know not every piece out of your colour palette is going to look bad ... They looks great in other ways like their silhouette or design but some of them do trust me 🙏

Totally!! For me the thing is that I appear on camera a lot, and I have noticed it does make a big difference. For the record, I didn't get rid of everything that was the wrong color, I just had to separate it and sort through so I can start building with this new information in mind.

I am always amused that you are wearing tank tops or you have bare arms. It's pretty cold in the North. You must be hot blooded. I am super happy it's sweater weather.

I don’t do it outside, but the thing with NYC is that the radiators make it unbearably hot inside and we are also on a high floor, and as we know, heat rises… it means that from October-March we sweat whenever we’re inside.
