Just adding a bit of real world advice here: Paras are a nightmare on location - anything other than a slight breeze and they fall over - I use Broncolor Paras with 4 Manfrotto 5KG weights on each stand - I see in the video the weight is on the focus/boom - this is an accident wating to happen as I can attest to - also hurts like hell if you bump your head on it. I now either use an actual person to hold it or lash it down to another brace stand with more weights on it- so beware of just how much of a sail they are outdoors - you will see most reviews of these by other YT'rs where a large softbox would have given ian dentical light - I have been a pro fro 35yrs shooting fashion and have tried everything there is - the worst offenders were the Elinchrom indirect 190's as they are not very robust, extraordinary light and collapse too easily on location - the bronnys are best because they are made extremely well, and the sections are strong enough- but because they are heavy they need a wind up stand and supreme lashing - also I used them once with the new Sirios which don't work on them at all because all the weight is at the front and they bend and then tip - the best lights are the 1200L's Mobileds - as they are tiny but still give you up to 1200. These large softbox style paras are overkill for what it gives in real terms when you consider all the pain involved. Lastly the Paras always work best when they are further away from the subject which means you will need powerful lights to project - and also they need to be higher up than this demo to make the best of them. Otherwise just use a softbox which is much more balanced

@@Mushu8495 Hi there - these only really work in a large studio - th projection of the light is what Paras are for - however the Broncolor Beauty box is a real must if you are doing portraits. You could probably get away with an 88 or a 177 but I'm not sure you would get the best out of it - Simon J Miller

I use a 63in on a Jr wheeled stand pretty regularly with a total of 30lbs of weight added the the outrigger wheels. And a Elinchrom elb1200 hanging on the stand. Leave para a bit lose and it will spin not tip. Not perfect, but no big modifiers work in wind. But a flooter does.

@@nelsonclub7722 Yep, flooters are definitely directional but oh those highlights. A gridded 11in reflector off center aimed at the back for seperation is a amazing look. 1/2 cto on flooter as main with elb1200 cranked up in HS. Rear 12in gridded elb1200 in hs. Camera set for tungsten. And model in a light blue dress under a leaf canopy with bright sunlight streaming through the leaves.

These things have been out a year and you're like the second person to make a video on one, it's crazy!!! I have the 55" version and its so useful.

I got the 47inch of this and love it. Assembling it at first was frustrating for me, but what I did that helped me immensely was to put the parabolic on a short stand aiming up and pull and lock the rods using some gravity.

How do you like it so far? I was looking for a focusing Parabolic one.. of course the Para from broncolor are tooooo expensive so if this works well then hell yeah! I seen some videos on other semi parabolic focusing reflectors that did not really have the same effect (watch Karl Taylor comparing a cheap one with Para 133) do you recommend ?

Hi Robert glad someone did a run through with one of these I am in the process of buying the 47 but had some doubts as to whether it was true 'Parabolic'.

I didn't know the focus rod wasn't removable. Very useful to know, I wish Adorama made that distinction clearer, especially since they sell smaller versions without the rod

Great video again. I really like this modifier. Especially for the price it can't be beat. I never use the diffuser though. If I want the diffuser on I just bring a large regular octa. All about the focus rod and a spot or flood and a bit more contrasty. It is huge to use outside though. LOL. I used a Flashpoint Jr. steel wheeled stand with 3 of those Manfrotto weights. One on each leg. Thanks for the idea it was brilliant. I have the 3 on that stand pretty much permanent for outside stuff. And hang the ad1200pro from the stand too. But I have been using it on concrete where it's easy to move. Still big profile if a wind comes though. LOL. I'm trying to figure if I can convert one of my Flashpoint jr. wheeled stands to big rubber tires to roll easier into the grass and stuff. Been to Harbor Freight a few times trying to figure which one would work. I highly suggest a big van to cart it around and back right up to where you need it. LOL But it's a great modifier.

I didnt know they made the zoom feature. Pretty Cool! Except if I got a big box i'd want to use it to the max most often. but I guess its nice to not have to bring another smaller box when you could zoom

A parabolic umbrella produces its characteristic light only if you use it without the diffuser in front. This way that kind of light shaper plays out its full benefits. All other parabolic softboxes that doesn’t offer a reverese light attachment and with a diffuser in front don’t make sense because as soon as you diffuse the light the parabolic construction won’t have any effect anymore.

Thank you! Finally somebody gets it. Using a para with difussion is pointless. It becomes an expensive softbox. I't's the same with the people who use a beauty dish with difussion in front.

I own the 47.2" Bowens Rear mount version, and damn is this thing big. It's a beast to handle on location, I just cant imagine using the 71 inch.

Nice vid, my favorite parts were the location BTS! All of my octaboxes, (you remember that term?) are Elinchrom, up to the 75" Indirect Lightmotiv, which I would never take on location, unless indoors at a large venue. I was looking at the 55" Glow Profond for something with a little more contrast and pop for beauty work, when I saw this video. Would you recommend the extension for the AD400 Pro, just to take some of the weight off? It would be a modifier that I would probably set up and just leave up, like I do with the 75". Any thoughts?

Great video!! Question: what type of strobe fits in there ? And what power (in Watts) is required to obtain satisfactory results ?

It would be hiper-interesting if You make a video comparision showing these profond reflectors (without a diffusion, like in 1:14 sec) vs. grand para reflectors. Does glow profond shape is a really parabolic? A built mechanism looks very simillar to broncolor para, but I am curious if an effect of using both lights is really simillar.

Appreciate your videos a lot man.. Where you able to check out the video Carl Thomas put out regarding front facing parabolic soft boxes? Would love to hear your experiences with those and wether you feel they offer a benefit.

Quick question (relatively new hobbyist starting my lighting adventure and acquisition of knowledge). If you have the time, curious about a few things: 1. Have you found the light rendered by modifiers such as this similar to "real" parabolas (i.e. Broncolor, Godox) - and how does someone know in general if the modifier is a true parabola? 2. With the size of the Glow Profond 70.8", you spoke of using it with the AD 1200 Pro (very expensive in its own rite), and I noticed even Godox recommends if you use one if their Parabolic modifiers using the AD 1200 pro or 2400p. This still keeps such systems (perhaps for the better) out of the hands of us hobbyists ;-) Thoughts on the need for higher powered lighting on top of the overall value for non-pro (i.e. beauty/fashion/Material). Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Where can I find a Profoto mount for this or adaptor

Hi Robert - One thing I don't like about the umbrella style mechanism (like Glow EZ lock) is that you have to remove diffusers to set-up or take down to gain access to the mechanism. It's a major PITA. Wondered what you thought of the Laofas (or similar Nicefoto) boxes that are much more robust than the cheesy ParaPops. Thanks.

I don’t tend to remove diffusion on the EZ locks, I just open the zipper and reach inside. The only ones I can’t do this on are the 48” because it’s too difficult. Haven’t used either of those brands you mentioned!

I understand that Parabolic softboxes with focusing rod are designed mainly for Strobe Lights. However, Is it also usable on a continuous LED light? If yes, Does that mean we can also adjust the spread of a continuous LED light using the rod?

Hmm, I'll have to play with it to see how it behaves. I'm sure to a degree, you will be able to adjust the spread/quality the same. I'm curious if it has significant inefficiencies, because a COB's light source doesn't produce as wide of light.

This guy wouldn't know but I'll point you in the right direction. The closest would be the Parabolix Light line of parabolic reflectors. Parabolix 45 I believe would be a close match to the Para 133.

@@moealyasini2784 of course there's a big difference in build quality and light quality because of the materials used. But the Broncolor is used for high end fashion and portraiture, so for amateur photographers the Profond should be ok. Look up Karl Taylor's videos on parabolic reflectors and "softboxes". I've actually ordered a 55" Profond myself. If I like it I'll keep it otherwise will get a Parabolix.

The distinction of "parabolic softbox" could be to avoid the tight mathematical tolerances that a "parabolic reflector" is measured up to. It could be trademark related, or a marketing decision because more people search for softboxes than reflectors. How much this actually impacts light quality and efficiency, not sure. My previous experience with the Broncolor Para tells me (without diffusion) the Bron is more specular with more crisp edge transfer, but I'd really have to shoot the same subject and conditions with both to comment on how significant the difference is. As for the Para 88 specifically vs this, the para 88 will be a much harder light source at equivalent distances since it is so much smaller.

Hmmm, the real question... what flash power did you use with the AD1200 in the woods? ;)

Guessing from your Dutch name you might be Dutch or Belgian: check out the Jinbei TD-180, same product (Glow is just a rebrand).

So depends on how big your feet are?

Hmm, I noticed your sandbag on the wrong leg and touching the floor on your C-Stand? From a gaffer point of view, the sand bag should always be on the highest C-Stand leg and not touching the floor - just pointing it out ;) But may not work with such a huge softbox ;)

Most professionals will tell you the truth about photography. There's certain equipment that are just for show and bragging rights. This video was about a para at a ridiculous price. You can spend that on a softbox or an ad200 pro with all the bells and whistles including a warranty. If you are budgeting what do you think makes more sense? An elitist would say this para is reasonable and necessary...

An item being low-cost to a person is subjective. “Budget” means something is cheap respective to comparable products. Look at other 6 foot modifiers with focusing rods. Whether or not this one is low-cost to you, it’s still budget.
