Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs: Complete 8 Stage Model

In this video I explore Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs which is a theory of human motivation. I explore the development from a five stage model to an eight stage model. I also correct some common misconceptions about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs model.

8:00 Common Misconceptions of Maslow's Hierarchy
🔵 BASIC PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
Fundamental to Maslow’s hierarchy are the basic physiological needs for food, water, air, shelter, sleep and warmth which are all essential in order to maintain biological wellbeing and survival.
🔵 SAFETY NEEDS
Safety needs include the need to feel both physically and psychologically safe. This involves feeling safe from illness, threat and violence. But it also represents feeling safe from family problems, financial difficulties or unemployment. Finding a job, saving money and moving to a safe area of town are all examples of actions motivated by our safety needs.
🔵 RELATIONSHIP NEEDS
Relationship needs are concerned with the giving and receiving of love, affection and feelings of belonging. According to Maslow, we all possess a need for a sense of belonging and acceptance among social groups which includes feeling a sense of belonging to your family, friends, religious group, an online community, even sports teams and work colleagues.
🔵 ESTEEM NEEDS
The need to feel competent and confident about your own ability to solve problems is implicit in the next set of needs, esteem needs. This includes the need for respect from others such as status and recognition, It’s also the the need for self-respect, self-competence and feelings of mastery.
🔵 SELF ACTUALISATION
At the peak of Maslow’s hierarchy is the need for self-actualisation and the drive towards knowledge and the realisation of your full potential. This is about the desire to accomplish everything that you can, to become the most that you can be. This can be a desire to be the best parent, create great art, develop your athletic performance, create music and so forth.
🔵 LATER DEVELOPMENTS (8 STAGE MODEL)
In the 1970’s Maslow upgraded his model to include cognitive needs and aesthetic needs. Cognitive needs refers to the desire to learn, explore and gain knowledge.Aesthetic needs refers to the motivation to view a beautiful piece of art, listen to a pleasing pice of music or enjoy your surroundings when walking in nature.
Just before Maslow’s death he added another dimension to the hierarchy, Self-transcendence. This involves transcending your personal concerns and seeing yourself, life and others from a higher perspective. This includes spirituality or giving back to the community without any self interest. Buddha, sages and religious saints are examples of people that reached transcendence.

Thank-you for providing depth to my understanding; the augmented growth needs Maslow added in the '70s. And clearing up a misconception; I always thought of the needs in a pyramid based on a picture in my first year psych text. Now I know that wasn't a part of Maslow's conception

This is timeless and EverGreen Great depth. Please doing the pandemic, having the internet was one hierarchy of needs that I think should be researched into and should be added to the physiological needs of Maslow.

Ma'am, can we imagine these needs in a cycle or circular loop? Bottom is fulfilled needs; top ones are most desperate needs to be fulfilled soon; left side going up is getting towards desperate and right downwards getting towards fulfilled needs. And all needs compete from time to time to play their dominant role in the loop.

Better late than never... My thoughts: I was hooked within the first 20 seconds! Your presentation style is captivating - the calm demeanor and clear organization make the information incredibly engaging. This video is valuable not only for the subject matter, but also as a masterclass in presentation itself. Many KZreadrs could learn a lot from your approach. On a personal note, as a student of Tony Robbins who frequently utilizes his framework of the 6 human needs, I was struck by the strong connection to Maslow's hierarchy. It was a fascinating parallel to explore. Thank you for this insightful and well presented video!

I am reminded of a study in which patients recovering from surgery were divided on two sides of a hospital, one overseeing a natural environment, and one facing the brick wall of the adjoining building… And those with the view of nature recovered far more quickly with less need for pain medication. this would indicate to me that there are certainly many complex interactions between these needs that are not expressed in the pyramid graphics.

I like this video and the depth of explanation about Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Thank you. As for me, the Maslow's hierarchy of needs is truly helpful as part of self growth. The explanations of the misconception is the best part in this video. It's still being taught at school as the 5 stages pyramid while in actual fact it has developed into 8 stages and shouldn't be seen as a fixed or rigid flow. It's fluid as you said and sadly this is not being corrected in the syllabus. Thank you again.

I really liked how you pointed out the misconception. It is true how we keep returning to our needs on the lowest level of the hierarchy. for eg., we could take a meditation retreat to disconnect for a while, but we do come back to our original lives. it's like entirely an individual's choice on how they roll. do you think there should be a time frame to reach these needs?

  • @LewisPsychology

Thanks for your comment Parima. I think many people never reach the higher order needs so there is no time frame . Wishing you well, Teresa.

I don’t believe you need to feel love from an outside person to move on to self esteem. I think self love is enough. This has been the case in my experience. But I know everyone takes their own paths.

What if someone struggles to reach all of the needs, they actually reach the top with extreme emotional struggling and keep slipping down, unable to fulfill the basic needs. How would you describe this person?
