Well, as an employee of a Mash dealer here in Germany I really appreciate your thoughts about the bike and modifications. I agree that the bike is not necessarily well built. Not because it is bad in general, but the dealer is asked to be -well, a little more accurate with his inspection on a new bike compared to brands like Honda. We take our time for that inspection, tighten the screws and nuts well, and we even take a closer look on the hoses and cables. In some cases, we found them to be mounted a little sloppy so that the engine breather tube has been squeezed between a cable and another hose. This is what I would recommend to dealers and owners: take a closer look even if that costs you half an hour in addition. The bikes are really good especially if you keep the price in mind. But they need an accurate mechanic. Regarding your modifications, I do wonder why you have picked the X-Ride Classic which seems to be not the right choice for you. As you mentioned, it is kind of a supermoto with offroad tires, so it has a black coated exhaust and a high mounted fender. I’m not sure about the opportunities in your country, but what about the “650 Six Hundred”, which has most of your modifications as a stock? Chrome exhaust and low mounted fenders, a softer suspension and even colours -well, not in yellow, but green or blue instead of black and white. I guess the right bike for me would be the X Ride 21” with a better suspension and 18/21 inch wheels that allow real offroad tires. Just looking like the old XT500 but with a better suspension and a liitle more punch.

I have a Fantic Cab 500. I found the dealer experience great, so obviously depends where you go. I was looking at the Mash also when considering the Fantic. So glad I went for the Fantic as no such problems as you have had with the Mash. My Caballero has been great and the only add on's I have which is not cosmetic are; a Cumpan (gear indicator and rev counter, plus eng temp), a left pannier/carrier and a larger screen. All very easy to fit. Very happy with the Cab 500 Rally.

Thanks for a very straightforward and factual review. I like the idea of the 650 Mash for generally bashing about on, nice to know what's good and what needs attending to.

Appena porterò a casa la XRide, mi aspetta un meticoloso controllo / verifica di ogni parte della moto. (Questo comunque è già iniziato dal concessionario, dove sul contratto ho fatto una lista delle cose da sistemare, dopo una prima ispezione al veicolo, durata un paio d'ore)... Successivamente, mi dedicherò ad abbellimenti e piccole modifiche. A me le cromature non piacciono, ma ho in mente alcune altre "variazioni". I was watching your review and when you spoke about the dealer I was asking my self if you were near me because I know the motorcycle mart sells Mash motorcycles and they are a great dealer. Then I see in comments they have thanked you for review. I have never bought a bike from them but in the past had services done by them. Always did a great job at reasonable price. I don't get in there as much these days. I own a DR 600 and a DR 800 so service bikes my self. Last time I was in mart I checked out Mash as I like a single but the DR800 came up and was to good to miss.I got a new pair of boots while there at a better price than they were on line. I live near Tenbury Wells so if you now the area you know my bikes are great for the roads around here.

Definitely thinking of getting the six hundred soon, here in Italy. Lovely styled retro classic.

I was looking at these a couple of years back, pulling on the heart strings and taking me back to being a teenager and lusting after a xt500, bought a Benelli trk 502 instead which again is a budget bike, I was a little nervous about not having a main stream bike but after 2yrs and 7 thousand miles, excellent no issues other than the stock chain was not good quality but was easily changed, my only negative was that getting spares was nearly impossible, think this is what the budget brands lack in when the bikes are imo pretty good.

I own a mash tt40 and discovered it's an aliexpress bike. For most parts i search for honda cb400ss and xr400r. Furthermore, mash has a great online partsshop. You could buy a complete bike in spare parts.

A excellent honest and informative review. My friend runs a 400 classic and adored it and it performs incredibly well and way more torque than my Ducati Scrambler 400 which hugely expensive maintenance costs that really hurt the bank balance plus dealers are a nightmare and I won't be having another..This bike is on my radar along with the classic 650 in the Blue/Black colourway..I'd be interested to know which Dealer you use as the owning experience is dramatically improved by a decent dealer! Hope u post ongoing videos..very impressive!!

Very nice bike. Hard to find bikes like these. The front fender on my old early seventies Yamaha 360 enduros was a full-length metal with good bracing. Those worked great and I loved them but when all the bikes started using the high mounted plastic ones they were not as good as the fully functional close mount metal ones. I wish we here in America had the wide variety of bike manufacturers you all do in the UK and the rest of Europe.

Hi I bought one of the first in the UK Mash x-ride 650 in white, they look great very retro looking very much like a 're -make of the XT500.. Now I rode mine for around 2300 miles the suspension back and front were absolutely terrible no adjustment on rear front forks were hard and no travel Speedo way to small , I wrote to Mash in France & UK also needed a 21 inch wheel at front. I was disappointed and have been riding for over 40yrs all types of bikes such a shame... Now have KTM 990 love it.

I visited a honda dealer recently and all the staff were watching something on their phones and chatting to each other oblivious to any customers. I was looking to buy a 10k bike and eventually walked out and wasn’t even spoken to

the only thing I would change on that bike is the front mudguard, I'd put a conventional one on, perhaps yellow to match the tank. the engine, radiator, under tank gets blasted with road grit and water with the type fitted, anyone who was thinking about buying this but bought the BSA Goldy because of its name and heritage will be very disappointed.

Nice video. I always wondered what these would be like. I have a Honda SLR650 and am curious if parts from the Mash would fit mine.

I've always liked the look of the X Ride 650, which is why I read the Motorcycle News tests with interest. MCN were pretty critical on two separate tests and didn't like it at all. I still think it looks cool though.

Very concise. Ought to be more reviews done this way. Your comments re fuelling would be appreciated. I'm thinking of buying one of the "scrambler" versions which I understand has the same power unit as yours ~ my usage, however, will be strictly on road pootling around quiet/twisty/hilly country roads at 30-50mph ish. Is the Mash tractable at low speeds ? Most modern bikes are not and tend to be very "snatchy" at low rpm ? Thanks ~ Tony 4/12/22

As with most singles they like to be revved and anything below 2,500 to 3,000 rpm will snatch. From 3,000 to 5,000 it has plenty of grunt and should suit your needs perfectly.

Great review, thanks I like the sensible mods you’ve done and that yellow tank is beautiful! As you have nothing but praise for the dealer, I don’t think they’ll mind one little bit if you go ahead and name them. As a 71 year old, purely short-range, recreational, fair weather rider (!!) I wanted to downsize from my GS800 to something light, a bit classic looking and simple. I bought a Fantic 500 Flat Track which I am enjoying a lot, so lightweight and plenty pokey enough for an old geezer. I bought it second hand, privately, but I did take it to a Fantic dealer (Krazy Horse) ‘cos an engine light was on, they were fine with me, fixed the fault and re-mapped the fuelling, been running nicely ever since. AFAIK, there is no off the shelf replacement for shocker on this bike, other than a lowered one from Hagon, I’m 6’3”, I don’t need a lowered one! The factory one has preload adjustment only, it’s ok, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

Were did you get the metal mudguard from I reckon it's a good idea and the other guys idea of painting it yellow same as the tank would look superb but I like it both ways.Your reviews are superb. Hope to get mine today so will do a review asap all the best from Steve

The mudguard came from ebay. If you search for 'Front 120/70/17 Aluminium Mudguard Fender Cafe Racer Brat style Bobber.' you should find it. I thought about painting it but on reflection I think the yellow mudguard would be too close to the gold wheels and they would clash so I'm leaving it bare alloy.

Um, glad I bought an Enfield. The adjustment on a rear shock like that is for sag, (how much the bike drops when you sit on it), it is not 'soft' and 'hard'. You need to replace the springs to change that. :)

Just buying mash 650 from the motorcycle Mart and while speaking to Andy and Steve they said you were one of their customers and how good your bike looks and how good the colour looks and how good the exhaust is now it's polished do you think it will be hard to polish mine if I took it off and did it myself as I have some polishing mops your bike looks great can't wait to get mine

There is no reason why you couldn't polish it yourself but it's a marathon job! I have a bench grinder which you can fit a polishing bonnet to and with some decent abraisive polish (I use Brilliant metal polish) it will come up a treat. Just be aware that not all of the exhaust is stainless, some of it is mild steel. You can test which bit is which with a magnet - stainless isn't magnetic.Good luck and congrats on the purchase :)

Good video! I’m a x ride owner and i’m interest in rear suspension. The stock one is really too hard! If i do understand, i can replace it with Dominator one. Isn’t it? I find an YSS for Dominator 650 3rd series (1996-2000 my). Will it fit? Thank you for your answer!

The shock I bought from YSS was the Honda NX650 Dominator YSS MZ456 Shock Absorber (88-94)

Why don't you screw the metal one to the plastic one?

Hi Mate, Thanks for this review. I went ahead and bought an X ride, can you/do you know the sensors changed? Ive had the bike for 2 weeks now, and today the engine started working roughly. I contacted the dealer, and he said that he had seen this in other Mash bikes, told me that an ECU swop should do it. However im not confident 100% mainly because this is based on other experiences and not seeing the bike. The engine runs fine until reaching the mark of about 4k RPM

I don't know if the ECU can be changed but I have had a couple of sensors changed on mine by the dealer. If the bike is under warranty then the dealer should fix it.

I'm about to buy one but noticed you have now sold yours, can I ask why you have had a change of heart as you seemed so pleased with your purchase, just making me a little nervous about buying one tbh, thanks in advance Keith

It is a VERY reluctant sale but, I have an opportunity to take on another project, whch I've been angling towards for a couple of years now and I have very limited workshop space so one of the bikes had to go. However, this is the most sorted Mash on the planet and will be an incredible buy for someone.

They need checking every 3000 miles but it's an easy job because access is good.

$64000 question - Is the BSA worth the extra I wonder, it's spec'd as more powerful?

never heard of mash but just from the looks it looks like a chinese clone combination of an old aircooled yamaha 500 and honda 650 single dual purpose bikes, i sure hope the mash is lighter then they were, especially the honda which was kinda an under powered over weight pig......

Nice but you have lost the ability to get off-road dirty with those road tyres. Should have bought a road bike.

Thanks for watching. With 17 inch wheels the bike never had any offroad pretentions in the first place.

The components are good but not assembled as good as they could have been. That is so typical China, which Mash is. From the guy with 8 years of experience handing bikes made in China or from chines parts.

MASH 650 do not buy, absolute rubbish, dealer still has mine for warranty work after nearly 6 weeks, I am in rural Portugal and an left stranded with no care given. AVOID.
