i feel kinda cheated, because this was supposed to be Zatanna’s arc, yet she has no action. she’s always shielding while her protégés are the ones with action. i hope she’s got some fight scenes later on in the season

i agree, wouldve loved to see Zatanna being the one to defeat Child or atleast have the most fighting scene, instead she is the one that protects everyone, the biggest flaw i had was when child was destroying fates tower and Zatanna saving everyone, it shouldve been fate that protected every1. just shows how good zee is i guess

Literally this entire arc is triggered by her love for her father. An idea in her mind was strong enough to upset the balance, and triggered the Lords of Chaos to make their move. Sure she took on a more defensive role this entire arc, but she's a mentor and that's her job. Plus the protegés need to shine for the ending to make sense. And Zatanna is a damn good protector, she made them all intangible during the Tower of Fate explosion.

@@DivisonXx yes it is. Zatanna knew about her addiction problems. In fact, that’s one of the reasons recruited her. She lied to them about training them as sidekicks but she literally grooming them for this old man to take control of their bodies. She didn’t even ask them for permission until Khalid pointed out how fucked that was of her. She didn’t even feel sorry knowing how she hurt Mary’s feelings

To the people arguing that Mary did the right thing since it helped and end justified the means. 1. That’s exactly what Doctor Fate things and that’s exactly why she should not become a host of Doctor Fate. And 2. She was not paying attention to who or where she was drawing her power from. She wasn’t being careful about it either. She started drawing power from ZATANNA. She put everything in jeopardy by doing that and had she kept doing so, she would have likely gotten herself and everyone else killed. Why? Zatanna was the one keeping a magical shield above them and protecting them from the literal rain of fire. Had she incapacitated Zatanna or taken more, whoops, toasty magicians anyone?

When the Chaos Lords like how power hungry you are, you know you need help

“Why didn’t Zatanna stop her?” She couldn’t. That’s not to say Zatanna is weak or that Mary is too far gone, but Zatanna literally could not. Why? Well you see, humans typically only have two hands. Zatanna, like most humans, only has two hands. Both of those hands were occupied with an extremely vital task. Her hands are needed to direct her spells, which are probably the only way she could have stopped her since verbal pleas didn’t help. One of those hands was busy keeping the obviously needed shield up since, you know, fire rain. The other was busy keeping Zatanna herself propped up and balanced. She couldn’t afford to swing that arm up and at Mary, since she likely would have either collapsed or lost her balance doing so. Since you know, life force currently being drained. If she did those things, the shield would have disappeared and oops, fire rain. Yes, Traci was staying up without her arm but guess what, pretty sure Traci didn’t have an arm in the air casting magic. (You try holding an arm up without help for a long period of time. It’s draining. Literally. Gravity will pull the blood down out of your arm and your blood pressure and heart rate will need to work harder to push the blood up into your raised arm.) So less energy was being used by Traci as her life force was draining. Zatanna, already focused on keeping one magical spell up that was being constantly worn by fire rain, was wearing her SUPER IMPRACTICAL outfit and HEELS and had dropped into a mother f-ing SQUAT. That, on top of the “life force literally being drained” thing makes balancing a hellllll of a lot harder.

You know there’s something wrong with you when two chaos lords like you.

There’s a lot of you justifying what Mary did. While I do agree with what you guys are saying. I have to also disagree. At this point Childe has lost the backing of the Choas Lords and has weaken to an extent. Fate and Klarion even announced it and Childe confirmed what they were saying. All they had to do was work together and fight Flaw. Instead Mary took it upon herself to drain the life-force of living beings to give her power. She was killing to have more power. She didn’t act as a team but as a solo act. Yes they were in danger but Zatana was keeping the rain of fire at bay with her shield. Childe was distracted with Fate and Klarion. That leaves the three to deal with flaw. As shown when given the chance to observe Flaw. A weakness was found and it was easily defeated. Mary acted alone. She choose to drain the life force of her friends and Zatara who was holding up the shield. She wanted more power. It has become her nature to take power, so she took. The life threatening event was an excuse she gave to them when she was first confronted. Now it’s different. She was asked, begged, to stop but she still kept draining them. Only to stop when Flaw advance on her. Mary was out of control. She could of easily killed them if they were not magic user.

For all the flaws (get it?) of this arc. I am hoping this sets up a fall arc for Mary, she's one of those characters who can go either way. Though to be honest, if she falls to chaos she will undoubtedly have a crisis at the climax of her "I'm the greatest threat so far" where she'd either: 1. Realizes how wrong she is and turns good. 2. Realizes how wrong she is and sacrifices herself. 3. It was all a ruuuuuse. 4. Doubles down, gets defeated and becomes a part of the rouge gallery. 5. Doubles down, gets defeated and dies. 6. Goes rouge and leaves, like Amazo from Justice League. Rated from most likely to least likely.

Sure she was sucking out the soul and stuff from her teammates and that was incredibly fucked up, but I would die of shame and embarrassment if I was defeated by a fucking rock lol. Can you imagine how would that conversation go? Friend: Hey, I heard that you had a fight with Child Mary: Oh, yeah, she was really powerful. She had the power of multiple Chaos Lords and, even when she was no longer powered up by them, Child still kicked our asses Friend: Oh man, that fight must’ve been intense! There goed a theory that Zatanna disnt go all out because she wanted to show Fate what her students were capable of. This led Fate to agree faster on the deal, which was switching hosts each week, which meant freeing Zatara.

Yeah…when two chaos lords consider you “their kind of girl/boy/woman/man”, that is when you need to take some hard looks at yourself. I will at least give her credit for trying something when no one else was doing much of anything else to hold it off though. A bad decision, yes, but one that did technically reveal Flaw’s weakness. I’m surprised none of these idiots figured it out sooner or exploited it until just then and there. Plus it sucks Zatana couldn’t do more in this, like they’re trying to make her the face of DC magic and she is mostly running support in this arc. I do realize this was all for the sake of her plan to get her father back though, so no need to bring that excuse up. But damn she played a risky bet to get him back from Nabu… Surely there had to be betters ways then all this insanity. But that’s just my feelings on this pile of clusterfuck.

I personally like Zatanna’s plan. I don’t agree with it personally, and as a person I’d say that the means she’s using is more than a little manipulative no matter your position on it, but I do love how it’s beginning to shape her as a character. You can totally see why she’s been driven to such an extreme considering Nabu being a colossal dick in regards to allowing Zatanna and Zatara to be together (1 hour a year, honestly? Not particularly Heroic Nabu), and it’s really exemplifying Zatanna as a trickster and stage magician, disguising her true motives and using misdirection to make serious gambles, which works amazingly well when things go her way, but will no doubt end horribly when they don’t. It taps into the occasional grey morality Zatanna has had in passed iterations and storyline’s, where she has good intentions but doesn’t always use honest means or is willing to ignore massive risks in favour of the potential massive payoff. But that’s just me.

@@catnoirlover1719 I mean, not really? Mary very clearly isn’t the manipulative type, she’s much too brash and headstrong for that. She believes fully that what she’s doing is for the greater good of being a hero, when in reality it was the easiest solution she had at hand that allowed her to indulge in her addiction to power. She doesn’t think things through, or weigh the potential consequences of her actions. In their first confrontation with Child, the second Mary realised the local Lay-Lines of magic where unusable, she immediately drain Magic from Khalid and Traci. She makes a reasonable argument that there wasn’t time and that she was the only one conscious enough to continue the fight, but the second instance proves she isn’t thinking clearly, as she drains magic from the planet it harms everything around her, her friends included. She’s not intentionally trying to hurt them, but she didn’t try and think of another solution, instead immediately grabbing onto the nearest source of power and attempting to muscle her way to victory, to almost disaster out consequences. Zatanna, in contrast, weighs out the risks and rewards for her plans, and makes adjustments accordingly to make sure she gets what she believes is the best outcome for everyone involved. If she was incredibly shortsighted and willing to toss away her morals, she could’ve trained one apprentice and mislead them into becoming Nabu’s new host full time, freeing her father permanently while condemning the newbie to Nabu’s control. Instead, she trains multiple apprentices and works out a deal so that no one is left trapped with Nabu forever, all the while giving the newbies and out if they’re really against the idea and immediately forbade Mary from the deal, which prevented Nabu from gaining an extremely powerful host who he could exploit into being his anchor full time. Naturally there are still potential consequences, Mary had left the team (and is now being manipulated by darker forces), Traci is altruistic enough that she could also be manipulated by Nabu, and as Khalid pointed out, Zatanna potentially training them for this purpose without informing them is all kinds of shady. And Zatanna doesn’t deny it, which is what separates her from Mary. She knows that this is an incredibly manipulative thing to do, understands what she’s asking of her students and reaffirms to Traci that she doesn’t have an obligation to do this. She knows how disastrous this can be, knows she’s treading a dark path, but is doing everything she can to make sure all those involved in the plan are kept safe. She takes responsibility. Mary, in contrast, doesn’t take responsibility. When Zatanna points out that she doesn’t seem to care that what she was doing was hurting them, her immediate response is that “the ends justify the means”, so long as she doesn’t say “you know what”, everything she does is therefor excusable. She doesn’t recognise that what she’s doing has the potential to seriously injure or kill her own comrades, and implies that so long as the big bad goes down and the world is saved, it doesn’t matter. She also doesn’t recognise the potential danger of putting on Nabu’s helmet, just that she’s being denied a power boost because they don’t like her methods. Zatara’s been stuck in the helm and deprived of a life for 10 years, but all Mary can see is the power and how she won’t get it while the others will. In short, while Zatanna and Mary are both willing to do morally Grey things for personal gain, Zatanna at least tries to make sure everyone comes out on top and recognises her actions as Grey, while Mary can only see her goal and the power. But that’s just what I can see. If you think Mary and Zatanna are more similar than that, then that’s your call.

Also it takes one line from kalid n about 15 seconds for her to stop once he let her know. Not to mention zatanna uses Mary ability to absorb magic for the fire vortex knowing full well her history of the addiction to power. Having someone indulge their addiction then being surprised it happens again isn't shocking.

So, I'm gonna try to defend Mary here. They be made it clear she's an addict. When she gets too much power, it goes to her head. A big reason why she stopped using her Shazam form. In the last episode, after she drained her friends' power, she immediately apologized afterwards and explained it was the only thing she could think to do and promised to ask next time. In this episode, when she drains their life force, it seems unintentional, like she was only trying to drain the trees, and as soon as she heard her friends saying she was draining them, and the comments from Klarion and Child, she immediately stopped and used what power she had to fight Flaw. She's clearly slipping, but she has a few things to keep her grounded. One is her memory of whatever happened to Billy, and not wanting her addiction for power to cause something like that again. The other is her team. Her team calls her out when she's done something bad with her powers, and she listens to them. Her team is able to help her with her addiction, and it feels like future episodes with them will explore this, showing her team always there when she's about to slip off the deep end, and will pull her back from doing something horrible. And since it feels like they're setting up the arc from the comics where Granny controlled her, like she did with Super Girl, they could show this by having the team be able to get through to her while she's being controlled and save her from being one of the Furies. That's just my opinion about what's going on with Mary and her problems.

@@Ok12343 well, she did stop, but it took a few seconds after she heard Child and Klarion. I feel like they're setting up the story arc from the comics where Darkseid basically brainwashed her into one of his Furies, just like he did with Supergirl, and it's gonna be up to her new team to rescue her and free her from Darkseid and Granny.

even if she only intended to pull energy around her and not her teammates that still crosses a line because she drawing on the lifeforce on animals and plants. That's not something a hero would do and she should have stopped immediately when Kahlid told her not wait a few seconds just because she got what she wanted. that's not her listening to her team that's her ignoring them because she believes the means justify the end

to be fair all zatanna really did was bar her from putting on nabus helm which i think is fair considering while her actions may have been justified she's just too quick to resort to power cyphing and tends to resolve most problems with brute force. and even nabu agrees that there are situations that call for finesse

Not only immune to Magic, but absorbs it, which is why Child wasn't scared of losing her backing from the other Chaos Lords, because Flaw had more than enough Magic to destroy them. 13 bad luck magic managed to do it's job before being absorbed. Meanwhile, Mary was hosing it down with the power of Zeus, draining life forces all around her.

I don’t know how to feel about this season. Why are some of the best magic users in DC doing so horribly? Zatanna just threw up shields her entire half of the season and Dr. Fate just acted like a brat. Very out of character for both of them, especially comparing their characters to last season.

Theres goes a theory that Zatanna intentionally didnt go full power on Child nor Klarion. The reason behind this was so that the students could showcase their powers to Fate, this is also the reason why Fate agreed very fast to switch from host each week. Zatannas main goal was to get another host for Fate and by not going full out, her students got the interest from Fate, making them (especially Khalid) the new host and thus freeing Zatara

Mary: Ima magically drain the life force from my friends and everything around me and use it to fire a big ol' lightning blast! Flaw: Yeet!

This is why sorcerers without a family history of magic or innate talent invest in mana wells. Artifacts, usually jewelry, that work as external batteries for when you need more power or can’t tap into other sources. Sure, Mary shouldn’t have tried to brute force it to begin with, but if her power supply was that limited without using Shazam, it couldn’t hurt.

I know she’s trying to be herself or whatever, but she’s up against a world-ending god and her diamond golem sidekick. You’d think saying the word of power would seem worth it right about now. But no, leech from your friends and cause more drama…

@@khnc1 Seriously the first time she stole their powers she may have had a point but, the second time was just stupid she could have gone for Klarion, or learned from her mistake not to blast the thing that can literally absorb her attack and buff it's master with it. Child even says out loud that she can use their magic against them with flaw.

So true, Of she transformed, then he no longer needed to absorb power from anything, she would have full abilities which comes with unlimited juice to spam power of Zeus.

At the end it seems Mary decides to somewhat begin the path of becoming a villian(correct me if im wrong)...usually people become villians because of deep tragic stuff...like loss of loved ones or something...but not her...she does something wrong and gets a life lesson and thats all it took for to go off the edge...wow...

Call me crazy ,just a touch ,Why not simply say Shazam and listen to Solomon ,Not complex ,effective and the best chance vs being like the Parasite from superman in a way (towards the different aspects of shazam and needing to drain power (Even after they tell her ,she still continues for a bit)

That’s the problem of using Shazam powers in human form. Transformed god form has unlimited juice to shoot all Zeus energy you want with no end. Her human body has only so much life force to fuel the powers.

I have yet to see a Shazam user actually use the wisdom of Solomon. I blame writers. Mary could have gone in with the wisdom and directed the initial battle plan but writers don't wanna use it for some reason

I'm assuming the Lords of Chaos/Order have a hard-on for power? Child and Klarion seemed to respect Mary and even Nabu acknowledged that Mary is powerful.
