She is delightful. It’s so nice to hear someone confident enough to say what she really thinks rather than what’s expected. She’s spot on about the Emperor’s New Clothes! Art isn’t the only place where that fairy tale is being lived out.

Just love Mary’s honesty and the way she expresses herself.

Mary is saying what a lot of people think. Probably the silent majority. Thanks for giving us more of Mary. I think the world needs to hear more from our elders. I often wonder, what would my Dad say? He was wise and he was kind. And he saw a lot, poverty as a child, fighting in the trenches during the second world war, so i think his opinions carried weight, even though he swam against the current. One of his dismal comments, after following the news with great interest was “the whole world has gone nuts.” Lol. Pretty sure a few scrawls on a big canvas wouldn’t have impressed him much either.

She’s so precious, thx for sharing these clips of her. She makes me smile and I feel her honesty. So good!

So interesting to learn that I'm not the only person who's "not terribly keen on Van Gogh." His work is so overwhelmingly lauded, I thought there was something wrong with me. Honeysett's candor is refreshing. She and I agree about Vermeer's bricks.

Mary was so talented and I find her paintings wonderful, and a beautiful way to capture the way places look. And of course, the art you like is a matter of personal taste. I understand her views on conceptual art , but am suprised that she didn't rate the paintings of Vincent van Goch. Having visited the places he painted, I have to say he captured the colours and atmosphere of Provence so exquisitely, and with such feeling , it breaks my heart!

Spot on, Mary. Art today has to have shock value, cause sensation: forget the expertise, the excellence of a work produced by someone who really knows what they are doing. What we are seeing today is largely whimsy, cheap tricks and gimmicks. After a glance or two, you can walk on by. A good picture keeps you there, holds you, keeps you looking, whatever the style, because it has plenty to tell you, especially about the artist and his journey.

Mary Cane-Honeysett, such a gifted artist who created stunning works of art. The World is poorer without her. So rare to hear forthright views which I agree with. I just love that laugh too. Thanks for uploading ❤️

Should have asked Mary’s opinion of LS Lowry ? I like Mary’s paintings and would love to own one.The best observation on art and it’s value was made by Banksy when he set up a display of his works on the street in New York,paintings worth many thousands of dollars each but were priced between 15 to 30 dollars ,thousands of people walked past over many hours and he sold only 3 or 4 pictures.If you new who the artist was you could have retired for life on the purchase of just a few of the pictures and one person even had the audacity to ask for a discount for buying two .Andy Warhol by contrast didn’t even do much of his work all he did was to sign the thing,no wonder he had such disdain for his clientele

I think her art expresses many things about humans and human experience, that may be expressed in abstract expressionism, even though you might never know it came from the same source or sources as Mary's works.

Not exactly. He copies photographs. He is not a genius.

All art is conceptual - and subjective. And there is a vast difference between making it and viewing/experiencing it.

I am curious to know how she feels about the work of Anselm Kiefer. Her liking for Turner comes a bit as a surprise when she finds the works of French impressionists too blurry.

while one might agree that some of the artists she mentions are not worth mentioning it is obvious that she was sold short in her art education. A couple of years with good tutors (like Ken Howard who she mentions) and life classes would have opened up her imagination and deepened her appreciation of art in it's many forms and made her better able to understand what she dismisses. But she was a great one despite this. I wonder if she ever saw the work of NY artist Martin Wong who was also dedicated to detailing every brick not to mention every constellation in his paintings of the Lower east Side of Manhattan. I think she would have loved him.

She is a nice lady.Her work it’s like the ones of the ladies I taught in my classes, we had fun , but cero talent. Still I encourage people to paint, being in the Royal Academy does not change your life, and if you feel it does, then you got it all upside down.

I love SOME modern art. I'm an artist myself; mostly abstract. But I remember hating modern art when I was 12 (and just stepping out of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence where there are masterpieces and gold everywhere and I thought "WHO, in their right mind, would like or engage in modern art??")... but that's a BIG category and there are dreadful examples and then things that are wonderful. But I agree with Mary wholeheartedly re Andy Warhol: Abysmal dreck. But mostly because he polluted art with advertising. He never produced anything original. He was a parasitic artist. But then...I don't like HIM and his lack of character. That probably has a lot to do with my not liking his work... it's empty. The art world has NEVER been the same... just "What's the next most outrageous thing?" Follow your gut Mary! You're on the right track. Oh! Damien Hirst is loathsome! LEAVE ANIMALS ALONE. It's USING living beings. He's a pimp, not an artist. Shame on the Art World for promoting that kind of dreck. It is NOT harmless, it's vile. And I agree with Mary; I doubt that anyone REALLY likes his work, they just go along with it because they're afraid to 'NOT be cool' or of looking too conventional. Anyway... I LOVE Mary's work. And I love how she is true to herself. And I love her bricks. ... The Bricks of Mary Honeysett. That's a short story waiting to happen.

Me again. She was certainly well informed. I’m pleased that she was able to visit New York and see something of the world outside London. I’ll make a point of watching all the videos about her and her work.

I'm with her. There is a lot of snobbery and exploitation in the art scene. Of course everyone wants to be seen as different and clever but the rubbish that is put up as art in these shows and auctions cheapen the whole concept of worthwhile art. It could be said that there is nothing new left to be done but there are artists out there with their own take on the world that they put onto canvas or sculpt that have real worth and can make a statement about our world. As for judging art I don't believe that pieces that differ greatly should be compared. I know that the current idea is to give everyone a trophy but that's not what I think.

Who does she mention liking after she said Vermeer? Peter someone…one of the Dutch masters?
