She came to save them all. Remember what Bert said. At least in his own words... Cherish your children because before you know it, they've grown and flown. If you get too passionate about your job, you can lose the other most important thing in your life... Your Family. The writer Thomas Carlyle found that lesson out the hard way, and it haunted him for the rest of his life. Mary Poppins came to reconnect the children with their parents and their parents to them. She knew that children should be raised (at least wherever possible) by their parents. Thats the whole point of being a parent. Your children are not there as status symbols or testaments to days where little or no contraception existed. As with all things, there must be balance. Passionately striving for the good of your country's economy and supporting equal rights causes is brilliant. But so, too, is raising your children in love and confidence, so they grow up with no regrets and you move into older years knowing you did all you could.

As I kid I used to die laughing when the guy wrecked the umbrella and punched a hole through his hat. Kudos to Disney for making a somber moment nonetheless funny and ridiculous in the spirit of the movie. Also kudos to Disney for making a 7-yr kid understand what a bank run was without even realizing he was learning something :)

I always laugh at the guy who says "No, not that!" when the son is about to wreck Banks' umbrella.

Which I think adds to the cruelty of the scene, while it seems a little absurd, when you consider that it wasn't good enough to just merely discharge Mr. Banks. They had to humiliate and destroy him. And you can see what it was doing to Mr. Banks just before he reached into his pocket and redeemed by his own son.

I can sympathize with Mr. Banks. I gave 5 years of my life into the call center as Workforce Management, and just like that in 2019 I was discharged (or laid off to be specific) on economic reasons not by company violation without notice. But I did say this as I walked out: "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" Mary Poppins was right, you do feel better when you say it!

"Father died laughing." I have to wonder how that might have looked under the circumstances... "WHUMP!"

Similarly, they thought David Tomlinson was just like the character he portrayed during the bulk of the film, cold and uncaring and nasty, until they filmed their couple scenes with him that aired towards the end. Tomlinson must've remained in character when the cameras weren't rolling, just as Leonard Nimoy did as Spock a couple years later.

When Mr. Dawes Sr. is mulling over the joke, trying to get the gist of it, I LOVE how he mutters it to himself twice, and just as he's about to mutter it a third time, he finally gets it!

Dick Van Dyke took so many different roles in this wonderful musical. He's such a fine actor, and the accent only accentuates it!

Mental institutions were a real popular thing at this time. Everyone at the end thought he had gone "mad" for losing his job... that would be the next stop he was destined for. 😬

It kind of breaks my heart to hear an elderly man whine "DADDY!" but what's really sad about this scene is not only was this probably the first time Old Man Dawes has ever laughed in years, but it was also his last, as Mr. Dawes Jr. later stated that his father died laughing.

Dawse Jr was played by Arthur Mallet. He was in his early 30's here. Famous for playing older characters.

*Interesting fact:* The actor who played Mr. Dawes, Jr. was the graveyard keeper in *Halloween* ('78), Tootles in *Hook* , and Mr. Randolph in *A Little Princess* ('95).

The absolute seriousness undertake by the occasional descent into mockery is brilliant! Losing your job is terrible for a man, especially when you've poured yourself into it; but it's nothing when compared to the love and trust of a man's children--the two pence in his pocket. Mr. Banks has lost everything and gained so much more. Hats off to you, Walt Disney.

If you haven't seen Saving Mr. Banks I highly recommend it. If you don't know, it's the story behind the making of this movie. The most profound line of that film comes from Walt Disney himself- the real reason Mary Poppins came was to help Mr. Banks, not the kids.

Top Hat Squirrel Guess it had to do with Michael getting in a fight with him, which caused a run on the bank.

Oh yes! It is a word! A perfectly good word! Actually, do you know what there's no such thing as? It turns out, with due respect, when all is said and done, that there's no such thing as YOU! Sums up Banking and the huge national debt that the banks never had, to loan us in the first place, to rescue them.

I love that he names his kids in the joke about the wooden leg named Smith. Such a sweet detail

When a parent doesn't realize that they may be being a little too strict with their children then it's probably their boss being too hard on them and causing them major stress.

I'm still shocked at how the bank administrators handled this. The elder Mr. Dawes simply could have said: "Banks? You're FIRED!!!!!!!" on the spot. Even as a kid, I learned about being fired from positions, and even back then, I was shocked at how easily they let Mr. Banks get discharged. Really, they could have simply said Mr. Banks was fired. Even Mr. Dawes Junior shook his head sadly when his father told him to "get on with it," when his son was told of him what to do. Even on the telephone, Mr. Dawes Senior said "we regret this course of action," with his son repeating it. This discharge could have gone much worse.

Oh wow it took me 29 years to understand that whole bit. Well the me that watched it many years ago didn’t know what the mafia was😂

During my job interview as a food service worker at Chisholm middle school 🏫 when my boss Elaine saw how excited I was she surprised me and I got the job

During my middle school year in choir my friends and I did a concert of Mary Poppins and we did almost all of the songs 🎵 from the movie

I am not sure if it's still in the park, but at Disneyland there was a prop on one of the rides. It was a wooden leg with an identity tag that read "smith". If I recall, you could see it while waiting in line for the old hanging gondola ride.

I like how they did this scene in stage version way more

Love this movie as a kid with my sister. This scene really makes me smile and laugh as an adult. You can really relate to his seriousness of the cruel world, but find lightness. Love this movie so much

It wasn't even Michael's fault. Mr Dawes just grabbed the money out of his hands

The cinematography for Mary Poppins is so ahead of its contemporaries. The bank members at 00:04 swathed in their circle of darkness is just so utterly perfect! Flawless filmmaking.

mr Dawes SR: would you waiting for get on with it. Son: yes father.

"DADDY!" kills me every time.

It amazes me how many ways the 'Feed the Birds' theme is used in this sequence - it plays over his walk to the bank, then when he arrives it's played like a dirge as he walks to what he thinks is his doom - and then, at 2:42 - his rebirth.

well the Upper Mongolians and Tibetans might prefer it salty with ocean water because they have butter tea that's salty. I think Britain missed an opportunity to trade salty tea with Mongolia in the 18th century ;-)

Riley Andersen 35 years later I still laugh at the way he bounces when they pop the hat.

This scene was always funny and hilarious to see the head of Bank laughing like Uncle Albert

Dick Van Dyke's going to be playing Mr Dawes Jr. in the sequel where something tragic has happened - perhaps he'll give the Banks family the tuppence at a particularly low point? (oops realised I got the name wrong)

He was the main villain of the film. It was difficult for me to feel sad for him when he died. He should have kept his hands to himself instead of being greedy by snatching Michael's tuppence and causing Michael to get upset (which resulted in the run on the bank happening). To another side, I suppose I can understand how depressing it might be for other viewers, but hey, at least he died happily. Heck, even Mr. Dawes, Jr. was happy to know that his dad died happily. Better to die happily than to die sadly.

This is a very powerful and underrated scene. A lot of metaphors. Ironically, Disney has become what it mocked in this scene. God bless my childhood innocence and everyone else who watched this movie for the first time.

George Banks is loosely based on George Darling in Peter Pan and Arthur Malet who played Mr. Dawes Jr. Played Tootles in Hook

spent his whole life trying to be professional and up to standard. then when he gets sacked he becomes the happiest hes ever been as he realised money isnt everything.

I thought that was a little macabre. It should be noted that none of the bankers seemed very cut up about it; and they rehired Mr. Banks as a partner.

During the "Let's Go Fly A Kite" scene, the bankers are there and Mr. Dawes Jr. tells Mr. Banks that Mr. Dawes Sr. "died laughing", so yes.

Hugh S probably a shock, his son thanked mr banks at the end of the film, and said it was the happiest he’s seen his dad in years. I mean it’s a pretty good way to go instead of being miserable when you go

I did and I was more than shocked to find that even as a 30 year old Old Dick could still make senior age look more enjoyable and fun than he does in his current 97 year old age 😅
