Dick Van Dyke was dancing up against something called the Sodium Screen (the technique at the time used to combine live action with animation). He had to pretend to see the penguins in his mind

Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were absolutely amazing, it just seemed so magical when they made this movie! Now this is the song I want to hear playing when I enter Main Street in Disneyland!

Mum took me to the morning matinee in town to watch this. I’ll never forget it. Sadly they don’t make movies like this today. It was pure joy and fun.

Complete chalkwalk drawing scene is one of the most iconic scenes in history of movie-making! I always loved little penguins, & especially that kiss cheek & slap afterwards I was laughing sooo hard! I even had a penguin plush toy & I would dance with him in this manner!

For real. Prior to "Mary Poppins", Dick Van Dyke had NO dance experience. Yet, his dance scenes are probably the most memorable parts of the movie.

Bert's a great companion for Mary Poppins' adventures. Even though he's not a child, he's pure hearted enough to participate with her in the magic. He's down with her vibe and respects what she does. You can see that when he talks to Mr. Banks towards the end of the film and helps him put the pieces together.

I love that dance and it makes me dance!

My all time favourite movie. ❤🥰

Dick van Dyk is very funny and an excellent dancer the world will be very dark when he finally goes.

I luv Mary Poppins, it is my favorite movie

The sad thing is that PL Travers the creator of Mary Poppins never forgave Walt Disney for creating this very scene. PL Travers insisted she didn't want animation in the film including this famous penguin dance but Walt Disney went through with it anyway.
