Mary Midgley and Why She Matters | With Gregory McElwain, Ellie Robson, and Panayiota Vassilopoulou

A fierce opponent of the over-reach of science and a lifelong advocate of the humanities, Mary Midgley’s writing ranges across animal ethics, religion, science, and the natural world. In all of these areas, she appealed to a philosophy that is humble and attentive, connecting philosophical thought to lived experience. Join Gregory McElwain, Ellie Robson, and Panayiota Vassilopoulou to celebrate Midgley’s life, work, and legacy, and ask what can she teach us about how to live.

MM's approach pertinent to topics ever more topical, like ecology. Her style conducive to easy access for a general readership. Carl Sagan: 'The Dragons of Eden', Hodder and Stoughton, 1978, pp. 209/210 - refers to Plutarch, Pliny & Montaigne regarding "...clear canine syllogistic reasoning...". The minor hemisphere of the human brain capable of deduction & guiding action without ability for verbal expression: Popper & Eccles; 'The Self and Its Brain'. 'Beyond the Fringe' lampooned 'Oxbridge' philosophy 50s/60s . . . . . . Nevertheless 'Thinking for oneself' - in whatever direction, whether or not ‘Philosophy’ - paramount, even if not obviously immediately productive or useful.

[18:45] No!!! That was a joke!!! She was laughing at the idea that being philosophical is being inactive. And She is saying just the opposite, philosophy[ must call us to act!!

The answer to why she matters is: Its a matter of life and death for all humans, and for the animal world.
