Some people think U2 is(was)always too pretentious. The fact that they think enough of her and know great artists enough to remake a great song into something even greater reinfoced my opinion of them. One of the best bands of all time and especially since the 80s. Them or REM or Talking Heads or The Pixies

A super band makes a great song, invites a singer most of it's fans probably know little about and combined they make the best version of the song ever and an absolute masterpiece. This really showcases the depth and talent of Mary's voice. And to just put icing on this perfect cake she's downright gorgeous in this video as well. This song will always give me the shivers, same as the first time so heard it and didn't even know who was singing with Bono and the band. Same as the first time I heard it like 17-18 years ago!

Every time I listen to Mary J Blige's vocals on this version, I am stunned at how powerful and deep the emotion comes across, masterful, talented, and amazing. Her vocal lift on the lyric around 1:15 hints at what is coming back at 2:15 and then the vocal explosion at 3:00 through to the finale. A beautiful, soulful, and powerful performance, one of absolute favorites.
@MikeKBar13

Completely agree Thomas. This song and especially MJB's interpretation and collab with the band, are absolutely stellar. The lyrics, the emotion, everything. Researching how the song came about all those years ago in Berlin (shortly after the Wall came down), and how Mary became aware of the song years later and agreed to do it in tribute, and then this duet! I'm just overwhelmed with gratitude. This song is a masterpiece & a gift from God, that absolutely does it all for me: poetically describes the human condition of disconnection, and provides a call to action for a better future. Consider the use of questions to explore the pathos of the divide and takes ownership (at least in part) - "did I disappoint you? Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without. Did I ask too much? More than alot? You gave me nothing, and that's all I got", and the declaratives pointing to a better mind set: "we're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry eacy other, carry each other, one". All brought to life my Mary's impassioned performance. It's sheer perfection!
My update to 3 days ago. This song rocks me. My sons are embarrest by the volume i play it at. They bought me ear pods. They are great, but now I dance freely to this song in the front yard with no volume. They think I'm a insane 67 year old. My neighbors laugh.

Late to the party again. Damn it! She is great! Great song. And Mary makes it that way. You are all correct. Every comment. And she has questions in the song. Meant for us all. What are our answers? Each one of us has an answer. Great words in this song. Love is a higher law. Love is a temple. We're one, But, we are not the same. Except for ONE thing. LOVE! If we can blame someone for our shortcomings, well good for us, right? The lepers in our heads may disagree. You got to do what you should. Carry each other! ONE! That is what we have. Like it or hate it. You can't escape it. We are all One. When you see it, your family just got really large. Despite differences. Such as Religion, Race, Ethnicity, Social Class. We are still all One. The true beauty of this song. Oh yes anyone can reject it. It is the truth. The truth is never popular. Jesus is mentioned in this song. Did He leave a bad taste in your mouth? If so, I know why. Religion. The message was corrupted by religion. No one knew that the temple represented Love until now. Well some did. So what about you?

Is it getting better? Or do you feel the same? Will it make it easier on you now? Have you come here for forgiveness? Have you come to raise the dead? Have you come here to play Jesus? To the lepers in your head Did I ask too much? More than a lot You gave me nothin' now it's all I got We're one but we're not the same Well we hurt each other then we do it again You say love is a temple, love a higher law Love is a temple, love the higher law You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl And I can't be holdin' on to what you got When all you got is hurt One love, one blood One life, you got to do what you should One life, with each other Sisters, brothers One life but we're not the same We get to carry each other, carry each other One One

Have you ever listened to U2 for more to an two minutes? You’re missing out on a 26 Grammy wining band, the most of any one ever with over 15 albums and the highest grossing touring band ever. Trust me, you’re missing out big time. Not to mention all of the charities and causes Bono and the band have both started including the One Campaign and Red. Yes you heard me, he is trying to wipe out aids forever. There is absolutely no way any band before or after them will have contributed more to music and the world. Oh and btw, I’ve been to Bono’s home in Ireland, it’s not a flashy crazy bedazzled palace. It’s beautiful but he doesn’t care about that crap and he’s worth $800 million, only second to Paul McCartney. When you see pictures of him on a jet, the jet isn’t rented for an hour photo session, he owns it.
Da sollten wir mal alle mal drüber nachdenken ! Top Song von U2

@@jbzooropa72 For me the song & lyrics were inexplicably lost from my memory (despite their indisputable brillance), until Mary brought it to another place and infused it with so much life & soul. But re-tracing the story of the song itself (there's a documentary on KZread about the band arriving in Berlin to record Achtung Baby in dire need of inspriation), and Mary's later discovery of the song asked to sing it in tribute to Bono (forget the occassion), and her agreement to do so, makes this collaboration seems like a series of miracles to me, for which I am grateful! And I agree the lyrics are spectacular. The use of questions to explore the pathos of the divide and takes ownership (at least in part) - "did I disappoint you? Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without. Did I ask too much? More than alot? You gave me nothing, and that's all I got", and the declaratives pointing to a better mind set: "we're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other, carry each other, one" For me Mary carried this song to a place that the original version only dreamed of. No wonder Bono sent her flowers! This collaboration is the very quintessence of the song itself: "We're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other ... one"

@@jaichhabra6458 way to miss the point of a masterful performance. This is called soul, emotion, pain & the transformation of pain into transcendent art. After listening to this song for over a decade, I feel transformed...I finally met it where she meant to transport us.... ....to a primal place then ecstasy. Not to mention humanity's oldest, most primal memory: the black Madonna. 😉
Mary J is unmatched!! The absolute Queen of Soul ❤ Just amazing

Will be one of my all time favourite U2 songs!! . Memories of my first love Trevor.. Sadly passed now 💔
Mary J is truly wonderful! She can crossover into any genre of music, sing along with any Artist and fill out the musical experience with a sound only she possesses. It must be almost a spiritual experience to collaborate with such a magnificent talent no matter how famous you are.

@@boogieeck Yes Yes Yes!! Attitude and Mind Set Shift. Intention over Obligation. I feel the same way about this song. Lyrically it seems like a masterpiece. Questions to explore the pathos of the divide and takes ownership (at least in part) - "did I disappoint you? Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without. Did I ask too much? More than alot? You gave me nothing, and that's all I got", and the declaratives pointing to a better way forward out of bitterness and hate. When I research the way the song came about, Mary heard about it and got involved, it feels like an absolute miracle to me! So much gratitude!
Lyrics, music, vocals. A truly great song!
This great duet sticks in my head even after years!!...Great chemistry between Bono and Mary J.Blige!!!....really great...👍👍👍
This song helped me build the courage to leave and forget the so-called marriage I was in. Its going on a decade now and have not looked back. Thank God for Peace of Mind.

The by far best version of this song for me. Expresses wonderfully, what connected me with my unfortunately much too early passed away wife. One, but not the same, but an almost perfect team together....
My God she is unbelievable!! What a beautiful and powerful voice! As always this is a great performance from Bono who does write such gutsy, brave and beautiful songs with U2! This may be rock n roll but it's real soul music too! ❤🎶🎤🎸👏👏👏👏👏👏

@@Paulamdz I think Yetzer HaRa (the evil impulse) would like us to believe it's "just a song". If it's just a song, why does it have the power to move us in the deepest part of our soul? The beautiful ideas presented in this song, are our soul's Phantom Pain, remembering what it was like to demote pride & promotoe love despite differences & difficulties. This collaboration is the very quintessence of the song itself. "We get to carry each other" - if we choose to.

Mary has a power and an energy that glues me to this video every time I watch it.!! You can tell she's deeply feeling the lyrics and music. Bono is still resonating beautifully. Even the rest of the band really starts getting into it when she belts out those notes!! She could command a whole stadium and then some. She's so gifted and beautiful!!
Que entrega! Maravilhosa versão! Fiquei empolgada aqui! Presente ver uma performance dessas, obrigada por compartilhar!

You are so NOT wrong. The brilliance of the song's lyrics (from the original recording) were inexplicably forggoten by me for decades, after making a strong inital impression, but I can never forget this collaboration. Truly the very quintessence of the song itself. "We're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other ... one" Certainly Bono seemed content to let Mary carry their song, to a whole nother level! So grateful for the series of miracles that made this song in the first place, and this collaboration and video a reality in the last place!
Always chills when hearing Mary J . Beautiful song.
U2 are always playing just below the level of unrestrained raw power, and to me that is the magic they bring to their music. Constantly playing on the Edge. (pun intended 😆) but then Mary J. just blew the lid of off this One (again, intended) , and it is a memorable performance.
Mary J Bilge brings a new level of brilliance to this ........
No matter how many time I hear this song I still get chills

At last. A song in which Bonio and his pals fulfil the role for which nature has best equipped them: working as a half-decent backing band/singer for a truly great singer.
