Mary Blair is hired to work in Walt Disney’s gigantic and rigorously maintained garden. As he welcomes her and invites her to get to work, she starts producing plants magically. Although he is amazed, Walt cannot refrain from correcting and toning down Mary’s work behind her back…

Seriously, these gobelins people are really brilliant. I never would have thought someone would be able to explain the Mary Blair and Walt Disney feud and compromise in such a short amount of time. Brilliant

I want to know too
this is just my interpretation. while it's good to create, we should crub our passions lest it overrun us. the greenhouse was a good idea, because it allowed her to create as she wished, but still within certain bounds, so it didn't overrun the rest of the garden.
She's a flower-bender!! XD really though I love the animation!

I swear these kids get even more talented and creative every year!
Beautiful in every way. Love the characters, the colours and specially the backgrounds with that modern twist of Evynd Earle. Vraiment jolie! Bravo!
I don’t know but I feel like they accidentally ruined their message. Clearly it represents Creativity vs Uniformity. Mary represents her unique ideas through a variety of shapes and colors while Walt has all of his ideas uniform and in the same color of a dull green. My problem arises where Mary can only let her ideas show in the green house and rather confined while Walt’s ideas are present everywhere else. I feel like this accidentally supports suppressing creativity. Instead of that conclusion, I feel like a better one was where we see the pros and flaws of both sides. Walt’s are uniform and orderly but shows no imagination and are rather dull. Mary’s ideas are beautiful but can be seen overwhelming and chaotic at times. My conclusion would be where Mary and Walt work together on the garden and showcase a variety of plants in different colors and shapes but organized and at least a little uniform.

At the same time, it seems like Walt was there first, or that it's his garden or responsability. The two characters found a compromise, obtained that allows order on the estate and for Mary to have free expression on a piece of it, whole Walt has not obly his own expression, but maintains order. . Clean and uniform work isn't always bad
I was going to say that the guy reminded me of Walt Disney and the art style looked like something from the 50's and then......... the ending... Everything makes sense!! Oh you, Gobelins, you... and your crazy talented students and teachers!! ;v;
Seems he is telling her that all that flourishing is for a specific placement, not everywhere.
Oh, you...awesome ( always awesome, Gobelins )
Based off of Mary Blair, an concept artist for Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Cinderella.

What's the story behind this?
a nice note on compromise, acceptance, and cooperation
Mary is creativity The other man is order This is awesome
The intensely geometric, modernist hedges echo the wonderful modernist natural backgrounds of Sleeping Beauty. Great little short.
These animations are simply breath taking, you discourage yet inspire at the same time.
so beautiful!!
mary, mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?

"Colors, creativity and a bit of magic, bears the flowers I sow." I know this isn't part of the actual nursery rhyme, but I still thought it'd be fun to respond with. ^^

Let it grow... Let it grow....
Love the colors, the style...but not the story. I mean, the story is cool too, but it's so sad that she had to limitate her creativity and her talent.

What it’s Trying to get across is less about limitations, and more about finding your place. Mary was Walt's favorite artist at the studio, and while her modernist graphic style didn't really mesh with the more traditional, more three dimensional style that many Disney films used, her concept art and use of color still had a huge influence on classic Disney films from the 40s and 50s. In the context of this short, the things that she creates at first, while beautiful and creative, don't really fit in the setting of a formal garden. The other gardener points her towards the greenhouse, because it's a blank canvas, a place where she can flourish and inspire, without overtaking the other areas of the garden.
Nice.
glad I stayed sub'd
Interesting
Aww :( he limited her creations.
I like it she is like a old school first poison ivy. But she is Mekong plants grow, and not killing people...Yet?
how does your garden grow mary?

AK videoss there's a making of in Vimeo :)
