Marvin Hagler v. John Mugabi Full Fight Highlights 1080p

Greatest Fights Series
Marvin Hagler v. John Mugabi
03/10/1986 🗂
~
One of the more underrated great fights in my opinion. Former 154-lb champion & one of the hardest punching fighters ever, John "The Beast" Mugabi standing at 26-0 with 26 KO's contested against arguably the best Middleweight ever in Marvelous Marvin Hagler for the first boxing card ever shown in Showtime. A back and forth war, a 6th round, a round I will never forget, Mugabi nearly closing his right eye & finally following victim to the power & experience of the Marvelous one in round 11.
~
Marvin Hagler would win by KO in round 11, improving his record to 62-2-2 with 52 KO's.

Hagler was my favorite boxer of all time. He was always in peak condition, and his combination of stamina, skill, and power is unmatched. He was a southpaw who could switch to conventional right hand and fight just as effective, and could box or slug, whatever it took. Take the gloves off, unwrap your hands, and take a hot shower. Your fight is over, you are the undisputed champion. Rest in peace Marvelous......

Pepper, this is two years later but it was clear to anyone that Mugabe was never the same fighter after this. Physically or mentally, he just didn't have it anymore. He'd have beaten - with few exceptions - most any other Middleweight history that night. He was awesome and put on a helluva performance. Guys like RJJ and Hagler might come out victorious but against someone who wasn't an all-time great champion Mugabe would have won.

This fight showed two things. Mugabe was more than just a KO slugger, he could box. Hagler had to work hard for this KO, he wasn't as young & sharp as he used to be. Hagler was the epitome of a dedicated fighter.

Mugabe’s manager was a fool. Mugabes manager should have given Mugabe a year longer before facing hagler. And something else. Johns crazy violent immature attitude towards hagler before and during the fight too. That too was idiotic on the part of mugabes camp and boxing team. You act that way towards hagler before and during a fight? Your done. Unless your name is sugar. And when I say sugar ? I mean sugar ray robinson. Not seales or Leonard. Among middle weight boxings professional champions? Only Robinson could take an attitude like that with hagler and back it up. Pure and simple.

I was there live at Caesars Palace in March of 1986 for the Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs John The Beast Mugabi fight. The tickets started at $50.00 on up, and there wasn't a bad seat in the outdoor Arena. It was very cold and raining and we covered ourselves with 55 gallon plastic garbage bags to help with the rain. Me and Freddie Encinas and another coworker from Hughes Aircraft Company in Tucson drove from Tucson and stayed at a place that I owned in Kingman, Arizona. The next day we drove to Las Vegas which is a 2 hour drive from Kingman. The entire fight card was sensational as well as the main event of Hagler vs Mugabi. We had a grand and lovely time and was the best live Boxing event I've ever attended.

Remember that Sugar Ray Robinson, Roy Jones, Jr., SRL, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, and Bernard Hopkins were middleweights too. I also don’t think Michael Nunn and Winky Wright get enough credit. That’s truly the glamor division. All of those fighters would have given Hagler h*ll, and Hearns and Leonard did! Duran wasn’t as tough a matchup, but out of five fights Duran would have won at least two.

You have to Rank Marvin s one of the Greatest Middleweights in Boxing History! If you view his career and look at all the tough top fighters he chose to fight and then beat, you have to rate him the best! Who at this time, would choose to fight this Beast who everyone else ducked but Marvin did and then destroyed him and did the same thing with everyone else and I must mention that he really did beat Sugar Ray in that fight that at best should have been called a Draw! Yes, Sugar Ray was just a better Dancer that night and not a fighter!

I may have to rank this as my favorite Hagler fight of all. Hagler-Hearns was legendary, in all its action packed splendor. However, I tend to view that as Hagler going to "WAR" with only one survivor, whereas Hagler-Mugabi is overpouring with drama. After. his victorious showdown with Hearns, Hagler was contemplating retirement, and did not fight for a year. The dramatic stage was set, when an aging Hagler had to be persuaded to come back from a long hiatus to face John Mugabi, a young, undefeated lion with a perfect knockout record of 26-0. Hagler endured brutal physical punishment, at the hands of the very strong, powerpuncher, Mugabi. When the smoke had cleared, the only man standing was Marvelous Marvin Hagler, who had broken, dismantled, and crushed the will of a thoroughly defeated John "The Beast" Mugabi. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

What a chin on Marvelous Marvin. I'm sure Mugabi got frustrated landing so many hard shots, shots that had KOed everyone he fought up to that point, and Marvin just kept coming. A lot has been said about this fight over the years...that Leonard, who attended the fight, saw that Hagler had lost a step and agreed to fight him, that Marvin had had enough of the roadwork and punishing his body to get ready for fights etc. I think Marvin showed more in this fight than he did against his toughest opponents. He literally out-toughed Mugabi...walked him down and knocked him out. Mugabi looked like a middleweight Sonny Liston, just so broad across the back and slabbed with muscle but Marvin just refused to be beaten. Great action fight.
