One of the greats showing his range of tastes. He was certainly good looking enough to be a matinee idol, too bad no one could figure that one out. It saddens me to think of his sudden demise, he could have been an inspiring link in brotherhood for all men for a much longer time.

Now this IS fascinating. A truly live vocal performance from 1968 just before Grapevine hit the No1 spot in the US & UK. Marvin shows his versatility singing an R&B hit and then shifting gears to deliver a Broadway tune- his vocal approach is totally different- his precise diction and performance adapt to suit the style- few pop or soul artists had that ability. Of course Marvin wanted to sing the standards and his first couple of Motown albums were in that style. The Motown Charm School grooming is also on full display. 3 years later he would release What's Going On. Amazing how much artist development he underwent in such a short period. I wish there were more clips of live vocal performances such a s this. He was a terrific singer and certainly could deliver live.

It’s been said that Marvin was a rebel towards the whole Motown charm school thing, I believe Marvin was just naturally laid back and professional, and always had control of that angelic voice. He was wonderful singing the standards, which I was not really a fan of, but I do love his first couple of albums.❤
