Amazing how so much of the architecture is modeled after a style most associated with the 20's, yet the city itself is most associated with the 80's!

@@kemallo4590 no, Art Deco is usually considered to be the style between the wars. Miami suffered a devastating hurricane in 1926 so buildings would have been replaced in the style that was fashionable.

I grew up there in the 1960s (yes I'm old, lol). My friends and I knew that the architecture was unique. I moved away in1970 but I'm so glad that a significant number of the buildings are still standing. Many of those Ocean Drive hotels primarily served as year round residences of elderly Eastern European Jews who had retired from the New York City garment industry. I remember very little traffic on Ocean Drive and almost everyone at the beach was elderly. Things have obviously changed a lot. Edited to add that the Cardozo Hotel was also used for the exterior hotel shots in the 1959 Frank Sinatra movie A Hole in the Head. My mom and I moved to Miami Beach while it was being filmed and we were temporarily staying at a hotel a few blocks away. For a little girl just arrived from Michigan, it was a big deal to have movie stars and crews walking around and a big ocean across the street.

is Miami Beach only place in FL with all these art deco buildings?

@@Justmyopinionlol It's the only place in Florida with such a high number and concentration of them. Miami Beach's art deco buildings are also unique for their tropical twist on art deco architecture and design. Of course New York has some art deco buildings, including the Chrysler Building. There are also quite a few art deco buildings in downtown Ashville, North Carolina. I live in Tallahassee, Florida. We had only one public art deco building that I'm aware of - a jail turned state office building. Unfortunately, it was recently demolished to make way for a condominium.

@@Justmyopinionlol I now live in Tallahassee in the Florida Panhandle. There are some charming buildings dating back to the 19th century. They were originally the homes of wealthy people but they're now law or lobbyist offices (Tallahassee is the state capital). The neighborhood just across the street from where I live has some cool mid century modern homes. There are some other older neighborhoods with charming homes of various early 20th century styles. The new residential development primarily consists of expensive homes that have something of a nod to Craftsman and bungalow architecture or awful looking apartment complexes. I live in a 1970s era apartment complex that has mature oak trees and a lot of green space. The developers of the apartment complex being built next door completely clear cut the land, which was vacant and densely wooded with large, mature oak trees. Our oak trees are beloved by everyone who isn't a developer or a politician who is being paid off by a developer to allow trees to be cut down. We also have a home here that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It's now owned by the son of the original of owners and is operated as a nonprofit trust Other than Miami Beach, Key West, Tallahassee, Florida Southern College in Lakeland (designed by Wright), and a few unique areas of some random cities, Florida's architecture is pretty generic. As is probably the case with Arizona, people flocked to Florida after air conditioning became commonplace and development was more about building quickly and cheaply than anything else.

@@Justmyopinionlol It just dawned on me that if you like mid century modern architecture, Palm Springs might be a nice place to visit. Because it's in the desert, the materials, architecture, colors, etc. are often. different from the mid century modern houses in other parts of the country. Now that I'm thinking about it, there are a significant number of mid century modern houses in the Phoenix-Scottsdale area. Not art deco, of course, but I'm putting it out there if you want to explore some architecture closer to home as well.

Streamline Moderne or Art Moderne is a late type of the Art Deco style and emerged in the 1930s. The style emphasizes curving formes, long horizontala lines and sometimes nautical elements.
