It really is. I mean, everything that Marty does on RIP is gold, but Lucretia really isn't talked about enough. It's the sleeper solo on that album and pretty much up there with TOS.

Marty's melodic solos in megadeth are what addicted me for life. He's not just playing scale runs, he adds the melodies to make it sound good. I've been listening to RiP for 29yrs now. Your an amazing player bro love that frozen ocean ibanez.

About the Lucretia solo (which is also my favorite), Marty said on an interview in early 2000s: "This solo [Lucretia] is a great example of my playing. It's got it all. It sounds worked out, but it really wasn't. I follow all the chord changes differently, almost like a jazz player, which I definitely am not. To explain this solo technically would take a page and a half and a music professor. I'm quite pleased with this one."

Absolute shout out to anything from the Scenes album! My friend had that on tape in 1995, and I remember hearing it in his house over nightfall. I loved seeing a snippet of "Valley" here.

Thing with Marty is his sound is ridiculously unique and powerful. A lot of people can shred, but very few can really extract value out of every note. I've posted on other channels on my theory for why his notes just "sound better" than other guitarists. Has to do with his unique picking form, his focus on left hand mastery vs too much obsession over the right hand, etc. Lucretia is one of the greatest solos of all time. It's ridiculous how that solo can sound fresh no matter how many times I listen to it. It is ridiculously creative, unorthodox, but also harmonizing and pleasing to the ear. I would actually call that solo a "perfect" solo in the sense that it cannot be improved. It is literal perfection in that song. It strikes the right balance of technique, harmony, mood/ambiance, pace/speed, timing, etc.

  • @jonathantheslow

The thing about Marty’s Lucretia solo is that on its own, it’s a fucking masterpiece. But when combined with Dave’s immediately afterwards, it just sounds so much better. Everything great about those two as guitarists comes on full display with Lucretia’s solos and it’s one of my favorite songs because of it.

My first obsession with a guitar player was Kirk Hammett when I first got into my own taste of music that hit me, metal. Then it was zakk Wylde for a good while for me. But about 8years ago I rediscovered Marty Friedman because I got back into Megadeth. Rust in peace. Then I discovered all his solo albums and appearances which are all amazing except for a choice few for me, my own personal taste. Seem Marty live up close and personal and it was incredible. Amazing performer, and amazing energy all the time. Humble and nice guy. Very inspirational. We love you Marty!

I may personally have Dimebag, Jason Becker or Trey Azagthoth as my favorite guitarists of all time. But Marty has this thing where he really LOVES those melodic bends, I can tell you're trying your damndest to play them hahah (I would be too) if it's anything that I would say makes Marty equal to the favorites of mine I mentioned it's his ability to make such melodically beautiful compositions, and he always throws in some out of tune into in tune bends at all the right places and doesn't skip an opportunity to throw it in either. His shreddy licks are awesome as well, when he actually wants to he can go super shred mode and just absolutely killing machine mode on the guitar but the most impressive part is how well he incorporates fast shredding with melodic playing. My personal favorite Marty Friedman song is actually the LIVE version on his official channel of "Whiteworm" it just sounds a lot better for some reason in that live version than the studio one does to me and the fact it's so high quality and mixed to perfection and not to mention Marty's playing on there is just absolutely magnificent it's just a 4 minute ride of epicness.

  • @MMAParadox

Marty is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, period. Very few guitarists have a unique sound whereby you can instantly tell it's them from their playing. Marty's combination of Gypsy Jazz style picking technique and unique vibrato give this unique sound where he can really squeeze every drop of value from every note. Literally every single solo is just magic to the ear. Fast runs are intricately woven into slower, exotic passages. He just knows how to play with tempo, scales, timing, and vibrato like no other guitarist does. Listen to some of his solo work too like the Valley of Eternity or Undertow. I sometimes just listen to those on repeat for hours and I wouldn't be able to do that with any other shredder.

I hate trying to answer questions like this, but we all know that's why they're asked. I love Dimebag for different reasons, more for his overall personality and persona and how he was in "tune" with everything he was doing regarding stagecraft and performing(how he could play flawlessly whilst being so drunk is beyond me). Kirk wrote some extremely memorable leads back in the day, but he never really stepped out of the "box" or tried to improve, only got worse over time. Marty is one of those guitarists who has an incredibly deep knowledge of theory, but the best part is that he never let the knowledge overtake his creativity, which is something I think a lot of great technical players struggle to do imo. So many guitatists out there rely too much on theory and end up losing their sense of musicality. Valley of Eternity is prob my new fav track of his, I'm an idiot for sleeping on Scenes for so many years. Also whatever profile you used sounded great for Lucretia, even through my phone👌

If you put marty to play among any other he will stand out because of his note choices and melodies. There is a video where he plays among paul gilbert and satriani and others.

Marty is my favorite metal guitarrist, Rust in Peace is my favorite metal album of all time, so yeah, I see you Bradley. :) (And me too, I started liking metal in early 2000 with being obssesed with Maiden until I discovered Rust in Peace. I wonder if this is a pattern. I oserved over the decades that folks that first got into Iron Maiden (and not Metallica, for example) then fell in love with more heavy stuff via Megadeth/Rust in Peace tend to be Megadeth fan for life. I wonder if maybe this a more common metal journey for metalheads that are not Americans, like you and me.)

The production quality of this video is really nice, and obviously the playing is awesome. I have never paid a lot of attention to who played what on different Megadeth songs, so it's cool to hear all these Marty solos and understand how interesting his playing is.

Megadeth on both the Riff and Soloing department is just so damn well in consistency to be melodic and heavy-hitting. The Original Lineup era is something so beautiful. Cheers.

When I think Marty's playing I always remember his appearances on Rock Fujiyama and his ludicrous encyclopedic knowledge of every riff by every band and every guitarist ever.

I'd LOVE to see you talk about Criss Oliva from Savatage someday. He's my biggest inspiration, and he doesn't get enough credit for how good he was

Marty is fantastic I wasn’t a big metal fan but MF solos were so memorable and exotic sounding when I first heard it around 30 years ago. Still listen to them and still enjoy them.

Marty Friedman is such a versatile guitarplayer. His solo albums like Introduction and Scenes are so different compared to Megadeth.

Could you do a thing like this for Dimebag Darrell please. I absolutely love Pantera and it'd mean a lot to me.
