Add that to her Mother making it so bad the coach left and her Mom took over her training, it wasn't ideal. Between the two things, it's hard to say how good Anna might have become, because she showed she could, beating Stephie Graff and other top players of the time.

Yes, the convention back then was that players would pay a curtesy (bow for men, curtsy for women) to the Royal Box if it was occupied by a member of the Royal family. They did away with that convention in 2003. The exception is if The Queen or The Prince of Wales is in attendance.

Yeah, 11 of the 16 double titles Anna won in her career (she did't win any in single), she won them with Martina, with who she even played 15 finals (4 lost then, which makes a very good ratio of victories). But all this started 2 years after this match.

was royalty there? wow Hingis, you're serve!! hahaha. Awesome players such sport and camaraderie amongst players. Hingis is a legend!
Looking back on it hingis had such a weak serve,,, And kournikova has to be the most gorgeous lady to ever play tennis

My word how tennis chaged!
Now THAT, is a match made in heaven. A classic.
Martina is a BEAUTY!
Lovely ladies played lovely matches!
So many things about this video clip.....ana's amazing beauty, the players' non muscular body and much softer play than nowadays, the constant chatting by japanese commentators, the smile of the defeated at the end of the game and their bowing to the royal box.. From 97 to 01 Anna had 5 injuries just as it seemed she was getting her game back Stress fractures and ligaments torn.

They didn't ruin tennis, they CHANGED the game, as the new era of players had arrived. Don't get me wrong, these players were great back in the days, we're very fortunate to witness how tennis evolved after a few decades not only for women's game but for men as well. Now that the big 3 and the Williams are close to retirement, it's still clueless what will be the fate of the ATP and the WTA.
