A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his KZread channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

    I thought I needed a Martin. They were my "dream" guitars. But then I played some... and no. They just didn't feel right to me. They felt a bit... clunky or chunky. And then I played some Taylors.... sweet! My 314 ce ltd is my "go to" and to me is what a guitar should feel like. Taylors melt into my body and the necks are so nice. I love the sound of Martins, but frankly, I love the sound of Taylors as well. LOL And I am not a professional player or gigger, so as long as I love playing and love how it sounds.... that's the guitar I will gravitate to. My Taylor. Cheers!

    I think your first guitar establishes a reference point. Even though my first steel string guitar was an entry-level Martin, it set "that Martin sound" as the standard. Now I own two small-body Martins that I love, and a couple other Martins that, objectively speaking, are nice guitars but just don't touch my soul (including a GPCPA4-R like Sean's), and I have one small-body Taylor 322 that is right up there with my favorite Martins, probably because it is a more Martin-sounding Taylor.

    I was on a hunt for a real acoustic guitar last year, and had my heart set on a Martin. As fate would have it the night prior at the guitar store their humidifier broke down. Almost every Martin was jacked up, although repairable through a set up, but not the Taylors and a few other brands. But I kept gravitating back to the Taylor 114CE. Loved the tone, playability, and looked for any reason to disqualify it. Couldn't find a reason. I respect Martin's legacy, and I like their slightly darker tone, but I picked up the Taylor. I fricking love my 114CE!

    The binding on my Martin D18 similarly started to delaminate. Martin is aware of this issue, and will honor the warranty to fix it - but there are three caveats: 1) if you send it in to Martin @Nazarath, Pa, you pay the shipping both ways. From Raleigh, NC Nazareth, apx $50 each way. You should first search for a Martin-certified Luthier within commuting distance to you - though if you find one, you may find their backlog of work is as long as Martin's. 2) it may take 3-4 MONTHS for Martin to complete your repair and ship it back to you. Sent mine off in mid-November, and got it back in mid-March. 3) If you are going to send it in to Martin for warranty repair, DO NOT attempt to glue the binding back yourself ! They will charge you to undo your attempted fix (though they will then do a proper according to their methods repair at no further cost (other than the aforementioned RT shipping).

    My GPCPA 4 binding began to separate as well. Martin honored the warranty and directed me to a local qualified luthier to make the repair. This kept me from dealing with the long turnaround associated with sending it to PA. My buddy’s guitar has been fixed 2x and is lifting again. It’s definitely frustrating.

    Went to Rvb to look for a beat up Taylor for cheap. Ended up getting a very good condition 2015 (so it has the 2014 upgrades) Taylor 814ce for half the price of a new one. I agree with you about how bad a lot of acoustics sound plugged in, but this thing's Expression 2 plugged into my Katana Air on the acoustic setting just sounds like an acoustic guitar, no harsh fake tones. The seller gigged with it and said the sound guys were always impressed since they didn't have to do anything special to set it up. Learning a great deal from you, thanks!

Nary a taboo moment, and killer opening song. 😉 Gonna say standard Martins owns sound quality, and actually even my DRS1 smelled divine, wish I'd kept it. Taylor overall sounds pretty, play better almost always. But I'm saving my couch money for two more Martins; an HD-28 (I don't know why but the herringbone just screams at me) and a 000-15m, after which I'll buy some lessons to learn how to play them 🤣. If you have any tips, software editing tips, or whatever that would be great. I want to record an arrangement I got done doing but while recording I can't seem to figure out this slap without it sounding like I'm whacking the guitar. I can do without but it sounds much better with it. Martin's are better for bluegrass and strumming and Taylor's are better for fingerstyle and recording. Depends on the player.

    Love your channel Sean. If that Martin is new, the loose binding should be covered by warranty. It's a rather common issue it seems. I'm a Martin/Gibson guy and have been for ages. I did have a very nice 810 Taylor that I sold to get a Martin or Gibson (don't recall which) and have played many, many Taylors so I've some experience comparing them to Martins. Your analysis is pretty much spot on, but I would add that Taylors simply sound better in a plugged-in gigging situation than most other acoustics in that $1K-ish range. They are excellent Bang for the Buck guitars especially for solo and duo work. Once we get to $1500 and above, you've entered into the realm where Martins and Gibbies will probably be more exciting to most players due to wood and full dovetail neck joints. I spend most of play and practice time unplugged and my Taylor just didn't have the rumble of a good Martin Dread. The banjo and mando just crushed it in practice. It's also worth noting that if you're chasing a particular tone (for me singer/songwriters of the 70s), it's likely that you'll want either a Martin D-18, D-28, HD-28 or D-35 or a Gibson J-45 (if early James Taylor is your jam; a phenomenal guitar when you find a keeper). Played into a mic, you'll be very hard pressed to match the tone of those classics. By the way, if you dig the GA Taylors, you really should try the 000 or the 0000 series of Martins. Gruhn (in Nashville) has been able to acquire some Sinker Mahogany that is basically older than pre war Martins. The 0000-18 custom sinker w/ Adi top will be your Soul Mate if you can get one. You can watch Vince Gill strumming around on one on their promo vid here on YT. Just save your gig money man. :)

    Martin is king! Always has been always will be! They both have pros and cons and both good guitar brands. It’s all up to the player really. I got a lot of guitars in all kinds of conditions including a Martin. I had never owned one or even spent much time around them. The second I opened the case it was like a big cloud of stank smacked me in the face! I never realized Martin's had a distinct scent until you mentioned it. Now I realize that "smell" is just the nature of the maker/wood. It probably also didn't help that (due to the fact that there were no strings on it and the case had apparently been left open) the dude let his cat sleep INSIDE the guitar. There were....HAIRBALLS!! 😭 After that experience I half wonder if any kittens were ever spawned inside! 😫 #foreverchanged

    This question is such a great one...I've had both brands and I have to say as you have that it sort of depends on the model. The grand auditorium shape by Taylor is definitely so versatile, they make loads of volume strumming but can also play delicately with finger style, etc. But when I pick up a Martin and hear the tonal balance and clarity, the woodiness, the smokiness, it's a different animal and if I had to go with just one it might be a Martin. The 000 or OM28 is probably the best sounding production guitar I've played or heard. The John Mayer version takes it over the top. The smaller body size reigns in rosewood's overtones (rosewood on a dreadnaught creates too much overtone for me - for that size I would rather mahogany because lesser overtones and more clarity). but on the 000/OM it is sheer perfection. That's all I have to say about that.

By sacrificing a little sound you can get the playability of a Taylor and still have a high quality sound with a Gibson Hummingbird, J-200, etc. All of this is predicated on availability of vintage instruments; not new ones.

    Thank you for helping me to rule out Martins! There's no reason the binding should be coming off of a $1000 guitar. Have you ever tried a Yamaha A5 guitar? I'm considering an AC5M, as they offer a lot of value (solid wood back and sides, and a hardshell case included) compared to a Taylor 214ce, which is going for about the same price, but only gets you layered back and sides and a gig bag. The A5 is also hand-made in Japan vs the 214ce made in Mexico.

    Guitars are like women, you gotta try 'em all until you find the one you can't put down. I recently went guitar shopping for my forever guitar. I had a long list of guitars I thought I'd want, a lot of Martins and less Taylors. I went to numerous stores to find every guitar on that list and try them.... nothing grabbed my attention. So then I just starting pulling every random thing off the wall... eventually I strummed one chord and was like "damn, I'm buying this." It ended up being a Taylor and I'm very happy with it, and I love the NT neck, especially when I think long-term... but I find the Martin vs Taylor debate silly when I think of my experience. A different person would have picked up a Martin and felt the same way.

  • @VikingPadre

    @VikingPadre

    5 жыл бұрын

    Totally. There is so much that goes into the interaction between a guitar and a guitar player: The sound, the fit of the guitar's body against the player's body, the fit of the neck in the player's hand. Do you like a long scale neck, or a short scale? Twelve fret or fourteen fret? And don't forget that we "eat first with our eyes". The look, the visual appeal of a guitar, either invites us to pick it up, or doesn't hold our gaze. Some people like bling, some like plain. It all goes into how that guitar speaks to us, and it's all very personal and subjective. Debating Martin vs. Taylor is like debating mint chocolate chip vs. cookie dough.

    Binding coming loose is a really obvious sign of humidity problems. The body shrinks as the wood dries out and the binding comes loose. There's also what appears to be a humidity crack near the sound hole. That fret buzz is also a sign. Monitor the humidity level in the room where your guitars live and make sure it stays between 40-60%. Your guitars will survive a lot better that way. Lower end Martins are HPL, which is compressed craft paper with a printed outer layer - which is how laminate flooring is made. Same with Richlite. Taylor uses layered wood back and sides and ebony fingerboards and bridges. Also, when comparing guitars, making sure you're looking at apples to apples is pretty important. Comparing the same body shapes and tone woods is a good place to start. The GA3 and 314 are the same thing, they just went back to the original naming scheme.

  • @VikingPadre

    @VikingPadre

    5 жыл бұрын

    "Taylor uses layered wood back and sides" on their 100 and 200 series guitars. The back and sides of "lower end Martins are HPL", but the tops are solid wood. And if you're not going to "monitor the humidity level in the room where your guitars live", then laminate is not a bad way to go.

It's loud but not a great tone. my Martin GPC-28E is a great guitar plugged-in but a bit 'meh' acoustically. My latest acquisition, after trying almost every guitar in the shop is a Taylor 512e. I don't think I have every played a better acoustic guitar. Its red cedar top gives a great warmth and sparkle. I just wish it had 14 frets to the body, but I can live with that for finger style acoustic folk. I play blues on the Martin and folk on the Taylor.
