Martin Lopezs work in opeth from my arms your hearse to ghost reveries is the greatest of all time in metal, if it weren't for him my drumming would have never been so inspired
Miss him big time in Opeth. Axe is good to by Martin just has that groove.

Axe is probably the more technical drummer but i know what you are saying. Martin had a feel to his drumming like a Flamenco player went Death Metal & it worked great with where Opeth was at the time. Glad to see both groups doing well.

I love his work in Opeth :) He had his reasons to leave, and I repect that. Opeth are still doing very well, and I'm glad to see he's doing well too! All the best Martin!
Man he looks a lot healthier now a days !! Good on him

Yes he does, I met Opeth back before he left and he looked ill, very thin, pale. I will always miss him being in Opeth but I am so happy to see him looking healthy and making music again! Soen are a great band.

@@FalloutWanderer-uq5sh Tottaly agree with you guys, amazing band!
Love that Martin's doing his own thing, love Soen.
I miss that man in Opeth...Phenomenal, versatile and super creative drummer and such an interesting dude
Ill check out Soen since Lopez is involved. One of the best recordings to hear and see him at his best is the Lamentations DVD from Shepherd's Bush Empire, London, 25 September 2003. He is just unreal in both sets, but especially "heavy" set! Incredible, Incredible musician.
I LOVE Lopez's influence in Soen. Definitely digging the sound he carried over from Opeth.
Well...that's not the first time I've heard from Soen members that they are doing just what they want and don't really care about an opinions of others... but, guys, do you realize that your music is just PERFECT for us, for your audience, you make it REAL, as you said so many times, and we can FEEL this "real"! As for me: Soen music was (and is and I guess will be) the most perfect, most ideal that I ever, ever, EVER heard and I don't think that it could be any better...that's just impossible!
Him and the great Martin Mendez together was an amazing thing!
It's always hard when you see a band changing that you were growing up with. I'm happy that I heard Opeth for the first time after Axenrot joined, because so it's easier for me to appreciate both, Lopez and him. My two favorite albums of Opeth happen to be Ghost Reveries and Watershed...
Que grande sos Martín! Vamo arriba!!! Soen Is great with you onboard!!! Congratulations!!! Un abrazo grande de un Uruguayo en Finlandia 💓💓💓
You are the man, keep it up Martin
I like Soen, especially their second album
Love this guys drumming
Not once does he talk about leaving Opeth 🙄
That guy is pure legend! Jazz-death metal artist
Legend 👌

I think he is the best him and brann dailor are my favorite drummers . I don't play drums but I play guitar. There may be more skilled drummers but I dig the cool grooves and blistering licks these two can do
*Still miss him*
Great clickbait.. didn't hear Opeth out of his mouth once 😒

Agreed, MetalSucks actually Sucks!
I don’t know who’s in the band at this point because I’m only familiar with Cognitive and Tellurian, but all the members of this band are so good. If someone makes a documentary about songwriting, I’d love to see this band featured.
I felt Martin had a great place up until he left in 2005. however I didn't personally know him or know what he was going through and throughout the years of him making great music he might have been miserable. I do hope that he is at least friends or friendly with the ex bandmates. it took some kind of team effort to make that great music expecially on Blackwater Park.

I bet he's still in good terms with them, especially Mendez. Mike had some serious patience with him back in the day, so I bet he still has some good feelings about him despite kicking him out.

Anybody else think Soen borrows a little too much from Tool? Or is it me? Lopez is a monster drummer. He came into his own on Ghost Reveries and then disappeared, seemingly right at his peak. Lots of horrible rumors made the rounds on the internet around that time. But he's clearly still at it and playing well. Probably one of my top five rock/metal drummers.
@blppt

Agreed, at least for the first album. "Canvas" is pretty much a Tool song. Lopez is king, but he's nuts if he doesn't think that song in particular is a Tool-clone, with a better singer and bassist. Love that track, though. (I'm not ripping MJK, but I feel Joel has more of a range).

@@shitmultiverse1404 Its all subjective once you get outside of tangible things like range. Personally, I feel that Joel does the 'soaring harmonized vocals" better than MJK, though MJK has a grittier voice.

Was after both Peter and Martin left that I felt the trajectory of Opeth's music alter just enough to appeal less and less to me as they released more music. Glad to have Soen, who seem to display a decent amount of older Opeth vibes.

Yes. I'm not saying that Mikael is a bad songwriter. Martin however, added that exotic and intricate drumming style to the band that helped me to fall in love with them in the first place. So, although Mikael tries to take the band in a different direction which I respect, somehow it still sounds stale for me. Martin's drumming just made it sound so big. It added so much more depth and layers.
The Soen stuff is good but it’s shocking that Tool hasn’t brought them into an IP suit.

Probably because Soan has a Christian message. Maynard hates god.

@@jsullivan2112 Didn't he have some sort of rare blood illness that caused persistent, chronic stage fright? I could've swore thats why he left/was kicked out, Mike just couldn't take it anymore. Anyways, IIRC, he was diagnosed and cured after he left, so no need to come back and unseat the new guy. I mean, Soen tours quite a bit, too, so if it was just about not being able to handle touring, he wouldn't be in that band either.

@@blppt That's what supposedly happened, honestly we'll never know unless Lopez states otherwise. I remember back when it happened, drug use was one theory. I met Opeth, and even with experience with opiates and drugs (unfortunately) I cannot say if he was on them or not. He did look sick however. Too thin, pale. He looks much better now!

@@FalloutWanderer-uq5sh Indeed Martín and the rest of the band were all using drugs. This enhanced his anxiety attacks right after doing Deliverance and Damnation. If you look it up Mikael said those records were a really obscure time in their lives. Then Ghost Reveries happened Martín got worse and he decided to quit in the middle of a tour in the US were Gene Hoglan would fill in and learn all the songs they were playing in 15 minutes. That is sadly, what happened.
