Martin Creed, Poet of the Everyday | Brilliant Ideas Ep. 36
Martin Creed is many things. A painter, performance artist, filmmaker, sculptor, musician. His work is deadly serious and funny too. He caused a furore when he won the prestigious Turner Prize for an empty room with the lights going on and off. He has exhibited a crumpled up piece of paper, a piece of Blu-Tack, live runners at Tate Britain and got the British nation to performa a mass act of ringing bells simultaneously.
He has a new work called 'Understanding' overlooking Manhattan. All his work invites audiences to consider everyday objects and ways of thinking in new ways. Martin is also inventive, funny, a dynamo of new ideas. with a work that consisted simply of turning the lights on and off.

I went to a lecture by Martin Creed when I was 16- unmotivated, bored, and jaded. I came away from his words feeling full of hope and inspired to pursue my happiness. Some people might think he's pretentious, or putting on an act, but I found he was really genuine. He wasn't afraid to show his hesitance, his confusion, and he didn't always know how to say what he was thinking. He felt real in that way. I still owe my motivation to him.
I’ve sat under that exhibit for hours...not just because of the environment and how beautiful the nights in New York is, but to understand why he would put that word up for the world to see. I read the description that was posted on the wall and it was amazing. Essentially, if the world would just understand each other, I know wars would probably not exist. Understanding is a tremendously impacting word if only we can understand it...
The hair idea reminds me of a Kiswahili proverb: 'Akili ni nywele, kila mtu ana zake'. 'Intelligence is hair, every person has his or her own'.
What a cool guy. Loved this 😊❤️
That girl/actress.... has an incredible 'Renaissance' face!
Watching this video was like tasting a salad with everything tossed into it.
His laugh is wonderful.
i really like Martins work..his songs and his art carry a lot of weight even if he is just making it up as he goes along.. like the plastic bags in a tree.. a funny thing is that i went to see the Turner prize show in 2001 at tate britain and i didn't realise that his instalation was part of the exhibition (i never saw the card on the wall) and i actually informed the staff that someone was playing with the lights in that room..
He's so quick! Talk about emotions!
I love the understanding song :D
I did that lights on and off thing in art school when I was confused and lazy.
Such negative comments. I got 2 minutes into this and had the overwhelming sense to break down and cry. Creed may not create what you think is art but he creates feeling and that is beautiful

My Name is Joseph Charles Colin & i'm the Artist in Warpaint.
What irks me about this whole thing is not the work itself but how people react to it: whether it's exaggerated and over intellectualized ass kissing or the overblown aggression. Why can't people just chill TF out!

It comes from an intense feeling of appreciation that only has true value within your self. I'm sure many of those ppl dont care what others think. They only give way to the raw true feelings the visual brings to them. And instead of dismissing the feeling they embrace and intensify it in their soul. I'm sure you've reacted to things before that have made other ppl question your authority on it. But you had no notice or interest in being exposed to someone disagreeing because you were too busy enjoying your life and finding and enjoying pleasures others may not understand.
Aye
Leonardo Da Vinci = Monalisa ===> Art. Turning light on and off === > Art?
I have been enjoying this series tremendously, but this guy is the epitome of what is wrong with government sponsored art.

Love the series, only art-related series I really watch because it's ...sober? But this kind of "artists" is what I don't like about "art". Had to pause, first time in this series :-(

The term ‘third rate’ is a relative one. Whether applied to crap or to art it is making a value comparison between first, second and any other ‘rate’ you choose. To add the word ‘absolute’ shows a fundamental lack of understanding of language.
Seriously?
And, of course, the «no nations, no borders» virtue-signaling bullshit has to be included! How daring, how edgy, how very trendy!
Wow... art is truly overrated these days. Switching the lights on and off is art? "What is art?" I'll tell you, not that.

Art goes beyond the real and understandable! Otherwise it's banal!
I'm a successful artist and strongly admire contemporary and conceptual artists, but this guy is terrible like rly rly bad
Clearly ...unbalanced.
