Martin and Lewis - The 4 Stepp Brothers 3rd time on M&L

Ойын-сауық

From Febuary 13th, 1955 - The third appearance of the Four Stepp Brothers finds them dancing with Dean and Jerry yet again. I like this one the best, especially since I can't stop wondering whether or not Dean's fall at the end was a joke or for real. A pratfall I would've expected from Jerry, but somehow this unexpected one was hilarious!

This is essentially American folk dancing. This is the culture we created and is purely ours. Along with Jazz, the Blues,Rock n Roll, and Hip Hop. We should be celebrating moments like these in our divided times. This is just a small example of us at our best. God bless America and these men.

Actually that's not true we borrowed this culture from the European Jews and Irish we just improved upon it because without the influence of the Jewish communities in the Irish communities we wouldn't have blues tab r&b and so much other black culture not to say that we didn't do a good job of making it our own it's just that it's not original to us

Well said! Jerry Lewis was a fantastic dancer and was able to add that physical stroke of genius to it. Not even Chaplin had that to that degree. Stan Laurel had a bit of that too, but far from Jerry Lewis almost unlimited comic imagination and control of his body in motion. But not all people get it. Some just sees it as Lewis goofing around.

If you read Mr. Lewis' book, "Dean & Me" - he explains that both him and Mr. Martin both learned the art of the pratfall and that in order to "sell it" it had to look like a genuine fall - and that as a result Dean ended up with a type of hernia, and Jerry (after their breakup) chipped his spine. He did say to my dad (he lived next to the Lewis' when they still lived in the Louis B Mayer house in BH) that his partner was the better "pratfaller", but he didn't do it as often because of his greater size and weight than that of Jerry....fun facts to know and tell.

Don't worry about Dean's and Jerry's pratfalls during this sequence. Both were masters of the pratfall when they were this young, almost in the tradition of Buster Keaton. Dean was so good at it, that when he did his "drunk" persona when he was a member of the Rat Pack, he regularly included a pratfall during their Vegas act, doing them night after night. And he never ceased to get laughs the way he did it. Of course, he got right up (or was helped up) and was always as "good as new," which is why it was so funny--even today if you enjoy physical comedy as I do. Jerry was seriously injured during one fall, much later in life, but that wasn't from a pratfall, but a genuine slip.

Hello There He really could - @4.05 you can see him channeling his Uncle Leonard Barr, a well-known ‘eccentric dancer’ of the time. He often featured on Deans shows over the years, both with Jerry and later on his Variety Show in the sixties. I imagine that Leonard probably taught Dean some of his moves when he was growing up in Steubenville as a boy because he often mimicked him on spots like this.
