Martin and Beckey tackle Chicago Midway

Come along on this flight in the Bonanza to Chicago's Midway Airport, as Beckey and I fly to the Windy City for our first weekend stay there since the pandemic. It's a beautiful (though warm and hazy) summer day.

    Some of you have asked about the fees for landing and parking at the FBO here. There are fees, but they aren't terrible, at least for a single engine piston aircraft like my Bonanza. Landing is $7.50, and there is a $18 security fee (for what exactly, I don't know). Overnight parking is $20. And there is a $40 handling fee which is waived with a fuel purchase.

  • @Airplane_Willy

    @Airplane_Willy

    3 жыл бұрын

    It looks like the "security fee" is entirely based on the FBO. If you look here: rampfee.me/search/kdsm#Light_Piston_Single and look at other major airports, you'll see that Atlantic is about the most expensive in the midwest on the security fee, while several FBO's have no security fee.

  • @martinpauly

    Hi Michael. It depends on how busy the controller is and how much talking is going on on the frequency. Quite often there are relatively quiet times, and that's when it's usually OK to ask the controller a question or briefly say hi to another pilot who is on the same frequency. Just use common sense - when things get busy, limit your transmissions to just the necessary responses. - Martin

We have friends that live in Des plaines and while my wife was living we certainly enjoyed many many happy days in Chicago. The entire area is steeped in a tremendous history in sociological and industrial evolution. What has been happening and what happened over the July 4th holiday is nothing but pure Carnage. Senseless murders of even innocent children cannot be allowed to continue. So many people are so economically trapped and cannot flee the dangerous neighborhoods that they're forced to live in. @@martinpauly Where do I start? ADS-B fails two performance tests. Because I got the notification with the airplane in for phase inspection and significant airframe work, the airplane missed the 45 day deadline for demonstrating ADS-B performance, it was put on the “No Service Airplane List” so ATC literally won’t see it unless I make a special application for each flight. The airframe work was in Orlando so Avidyne, being fairly local, supposedly came up and fixed all of the issues. No, sorry, they are all still there. Cross-fill between IFD550 and IFD540 doesn’t work. IFD550 will not accept database updates. IFD550 won’t switch localizer frequency from standby to active. Datalink fails. There are others.

    @@TIO540S1 Oh man, that does sound like a lot of trouble. I would have been very upset, too. Some of the kinds of things you mentioned - like failing the ADS-B performance test, or no cross-fill between multiple IFDs - sound like installation mistakes rather than broken equipment. An IFD not accepting database updates might be a problem wuth the unit, which is never fun, of course, but it should be replaced under warranty. There is a Facebook group called "Avidyne Pilots Club" which may be helpful for you; I've seen other people describe their installation and configuration issues in that group, and more often than not they can get things figure out.
