Martha Wells on writing NETWORK EFFECT-The MurderBot Diaries

The MurderBot Diaries author Martha Wells talks about the latest novel in the series, NETWORK EFFECT, her discovery writing process, and building a sci-fi universe around a unique protagonist.
This award-winning science fiction series features the introverted, cynical, and frequently hilarious security robot that thinks privately of itself as MurderBot. It’s a half-machine, half-organic construct, corporate owned and rented out to space-exploring organizations.
There’re plenty of SecUnit’s just like it, except MurderBot hacked its systems to allow greater autonomy - which mostly consists of slacking on the job and downloading as much serial entertainment as it can stream.
When its latest clients, a scientific research team exploring a distant planet, find themselves in danger after a neighboring mission group go dark, MurderBot must exploit all its unique talents and perspectives to defend them. Which risks revealing to its human crew that it’s broken free of its corporate limitations, as well as an unpleasant history that inspired its threatening moniker.
THE MURDERBOT DIARIES include 4 novellas - ALL SYSTEMS RED, ARTIFICIAL CONDITION, ROGUE PROTOCOL, and EXIT STRATEGY - and a brand new, full-length novel called NETWORK EFFECT, which is available now from Tor.Com publishing.

ABOUT "NETWORK EFFECT"
The first full-length novel in Martha Wells’ New York Times and USA Today bestselling Murderbot Diaries series.
You know that feeling when you’re at work, and you’ve had enough of people, and then the boss walks in with yet another job that needs to be done right this second or the world will end, but all you want to do is go home and binge your favorite shows? And you’re a sentient murder machine programmed for destruction? Congratulations, you’re Murderbot.
Come for the pew-pew space battles, stay for the most relatable A.I. you’ll read this century.
"I’m usually alone in my head, and that’s where 90 plus percent of my problems are."
When Murderbot’s human associates (not friends, never friends) are captured and another not-friend from its past requires urgent assistance, Murderbot must choose between inertia and drastic action.
Drastic action it is, then.

I loved your interview. The fact you let her speak and that you're into the book and 'get' it. And that you make a point to use 'it' to gender murderbot correctly. You can just tell hearing the interview that she's more comfortable here than I've seen in others, and I think it's at least partly due to the respect you give. Loved getting to hear more from her and gaining more depth to an amazing series!

I just binged the first 4 novellas since 1 July 2021. I haven’t been this immersed in fiction in years. It rekindled my interest in recreational reading. This is a good interview

As an autistic person, I relate so much to MB. It really reflects how i feel about my own humanity, my own discomfort with socialising, and my own obsessions i would much rather be doing. I'm so happy to have encountered this series.

Martha really gave us a character for the ages, a non-human who reflects our humanity in such valuable, interesting ways!

Interesting interview, thank you!❤ I think, many people do not understand the idea of these books: the main character is not a robot, not a human, and Murderbot doesn' t want to be a human! (And you say it!) He has personality, but not like people. Most readers think that Murderbot becomes more human-like as the story progress, and they think about - is it possible to consider bots equal to a human. I think this story of Murderbot (Killerbot in my language:) is more interesting - a story about new type of corporate slaves, their ways of think, own POVs, own thoughts and wishes, and at last - how humanity is still antropocentric. And many readers only confirms it:)

to think of m.b. as a kind of expanded man, a human with fantasies and fluid ideas about their life, their existence if you will and their perspective and experience integrating more or less metaphorically their perspective and surrounding circumstances ... would that work?

OH THANK GOODNESS she didn't kill MurderBot! Oh my gosh that was a close shave. I mean, the book had kind of a sad ending anyway, but thank goodness it wasn't *that* bleak, and left the door open for more shenanigans. A really enjoyable interview, thank you so much.
