These sugar cookies are the best all around and deliver just enough lemony goodness to make them really special. They have become my family's favorite so I double the batch and roll half into a log like you do for refrigerator cookies and freeze until I need to make more. If there was a rating for this recipe I'd give it five stars.

Fine make some for the Holidays. Looks delicious.

Love the idea of using lemon and zest, thank you Martha, I’ve copied down this lovely recipe! I’d always used my mom’s standard, similar recipe, however it’s spiced with ginger and nutmeg, so the lemon is going to be a very nice change! I still also press them as mom taught me as a preteen - make a very light film of butter (or cookie dough) on the bottom of a drinking glass/jar, press into the sugar, then fairly gently press down the dropped cookie dough to flatten. Wa-la, ready to bake and the sugar will stay put. PS. Now that I’m old, I sometimes just use the bottom of a wine bottle to get a little mound on the cookies rather than them being more flat-flat - not to mention enjoy a glass while they’re in the oven!

A few years back I made sugar cookies and wanted to add a twist to the frosting. So, I graded just a little bit of lemon rind and added the lemon juice from the lemon to my powdered sugar. Omg, those cookies tasted great. Kids loved them.

Many times cookies become puffy from overmixing the butter in the sugar together thus causing a lot of air which contributes the puffiness

Instead of lemon can we do equal substitute with orange?

Orange zest functions a little different in baking but it would still be delicious! Give it a try! 😊

I love the recipe, but only making 3 at a time could take hours.

A couple of inches apart would do. But also Martha was using a little quarter sheet so not a lot of cookies would fit on that size.

3 cookies , this would take me 2days of cooking for 1 batch. Maybe on a day when I just have nothing else to do.

Just use a full size cookie sheet. The cookie sheet she is use what they call a 1/4 size cookie sheet.

I just made this recipe this morning. I doubled the lemon zest, and you can't taste any lemon in the finished cookies. Was really disappointed. I don't know what happened?
