Martha Graham Technique Spiral Floor Exercise, Intermediate level by Phyllis Gutelius

Two excerpts from the Graham technique class 2 video program "Guidelines in Contemporary Dance Training" by Phyllis Gutelius.
The first spiral exercise uses opposition of the upper torso against the lower torso to maintain the center of the spiral for deep contractions into and up from the floor.
In the second exercise: spirals move around the axis of the spine. The weight centers between the legs. Each change: to a sit on one hip, to open fourth position, open spiral second, and fourth position with the foot on the walk moves the hips, waist, shoulders and head around the axis of a strong center. The base of the throat centered over the pelvic center maintains a perpendicular through the core of the body throughout the exercise.
Guidelines in Contemporary Dance Training 1 The Floorwork, 84 minutes of floor exercises for 3 complete classes at 3 levels and related written study aids is available for Download or on DVD at DanceGGE.com
