    For what it's worth, the originals sound quite distinct from each other. I am fortunate to own one of each. If you open up the JCM800's master volume and keep the preamp fairly low (5 or less), it can get very close to the sound of a late 60's JMP plexi panel Super Lead.

    @@michaelcraig9449 you are absolutely incorrect....in 1977 Marshall made many JMP models. MkII superlead 100 and MkII master lead 100 were 2 of the most popular. Do you own either of these amps? From a builders standpoint the 2 amps are virtually identical after the first pre amp tube. The main difference between a superlead and a Masterlead is the masterlead has a cascading gain stage in V1. Where the superlead uses 1/2 of the 12ax7 for the normal channel and the other 1/2 of the 12ax7 for the bright channel. With that being said, if you plug in to the low input of a master lead, then turn the master volume all the way up with the preamp control set to your liking. You will essentially have the bright channel of the superlead. So to say a JMP is better then a JCM800 is incorrect. A JMP masterlead 100 is a JCM800......it is the same exact circuit.

    I've played both, but brought the JCM 800. The Plexi has cool tones, but not everyone can crank them to 10, as even in 5watt mode, these amps are amazingly loud. However, without the use of any pedals, the JCM has the ability to cover most sounds I want, something the Plexi can't. If you like the 60s-70s, get the plexi. If you want to rock around the world, it's the JCM all the way!

In my 20's i still had the fender amp until i sold it and i went down to a Peavey Rage 108 1x10 combo amp. Later on after a 10+ hiatus, i got a Traynor 1x10 combo and a Epiphone G400 guitar. That was 15+ years ago.

    I know, I know, they're Marshalls, but you should have started off with a disclaimer by saying, if you want to listen to clean sounds, go see our reviews on Fender amps because we ain't gunna do clean sounds here. And if you say it's common to you dial the JCM to 7s, then then it's common to dime a plexi (ie.dial it 10s). And on the dimed plexi, if you want a clean sound, just roll off the volume on the guitar - I think it would have been good to show this feature for a better comparison. Good video. Thks.

    @markbouquet13165 жыл бұрын

    Definitely the JCM 800. I had my 1981 modded by Anthony’s Electronics in Chicago. I have an extra stage, a CLEAN CHANNEL which I use my JCM 2000 foot switch for, I have a built in effects loop, and a built in “attenuator” that isn’t like the old power soaks. Then I have another dial on the back that tweaks (if you want it) the compression from the head to the cabinet. This is the coolest amp I ever owned. I’ve had other 1981 JCM 800 50 watts (ALWAYS) but when amp modeling seemed to be the way everything was going, and clubs when I was at my peak would laugh at you if you were a cover band. We were all original by 1985. We were offered a record deal by getting on “THE TAPE” at the 1986 “New Music Seminar” in New York City. Hard Rock/Metal ruled the eighties but we were the only metal band out of bands nation wide to get on “The Tape” which was handed out to anyone who was anybody in the record industry. This was all pre-internet. The contacts we listed alphabetically inside the seminar magazine. But to my point, I have had an ISP THETA PRO which had more problems that it was worth. But when you’re doing covers, you needed the ability to quickly change your tones. I got tired of doing the stomp box tap dance! I’ve had so e earlier Line 6 stuff which was easy to operate but it just didn’t cut it. Then I bought a HELIX and I would be swallowed up by a tube amp no matter how loud I was. So, here I have that standard old school JCM 800 50 watt tone and the ability to have the EXACT STOMP BOXES I LIKE. I have a large Voo-Doo Lab pedal board with a interface and a midi pedal programmed to turn on the pedals I program it to do and quiet would be an understatement. This guy does these mods for $800 dollars. I am not a fan of bands like Slayer or Venom, but he endorses me and both of them and a guitarist out here that took what Michael Batio Angelo did to a whole new level. You can find him on Facebook at Anthony’s Electronics or Anthony the Amp Man. You won’t regret doing this or “not molesting an Amp that is a one trick pony” that I picked up my last one for $1200 dollars. I even was able to keep the original circuit board which I can start at about $600 dollars for. They have reissues but they aren’t the same. Just like the 1981 JCM 800 was the first year the jacks were vertical and the last year they were hand wired. I don’t when they stopped using the Drake Transformers. But if I was to mod the JCM 2000, the first thing to go would be the transformer and the tubes. Marshall needs to get in touch with this guy who modified theirs and many other amps. He’s a brilliant 40 something technician who has his own trade secrets. If you call him, tell him Mark sent you. Maybe he’ll shave something off the price.

    Each of those amplifiers has its place. I have not had the chance to play either of the 20W models. I like the idea of the smaller lighter stack. I would encourage anyone who is serious about purchasing either of these to try them at your local music store. The plexi will probably need a dirt pedal but will play well with it. Johan Segeborn just did a video using a boss 7 band eq pedal in front of a plexi. You should see how well he nailed VH and Slash sounds. The JCM800 should give you 80s hair band sounds but even your favorite headbangers typically used od or dirt pedals in front of them. A JCM800 can get a little mushy with the gain set too high. All knobs on 7 is probably not the best setting. I also found that the sound improved when I lowered my pickups.

I still use Marshall's, if they need fixed I can drive to the Factory and get fixed on the day, I also have a Katana 100 2x12 which is great value, and various lower watt amps, my first choice is still the Marshall, like oak furniture, all valve Marshalls will outlive the owner, and sound brilliant.

    With the Plexi you can run an external volume pedal or a multi fx system in the FX loop and use that as your master volume..that way you can get the tone at low levels.

    The plexi needs an attenuator. I did it. The eq is effected but can be dialed back to a normal tone. I cant complain. I love it. I might get the 800 too. But it might be a waste. Not sure if it will sound as good. And the plexi should be dimed. Ask Eddie

    They should do a 20 watt 1987x . The 1987 is a different beast from earlier super leads . Tighter and more gain with a bolder low end . I would buy a 20/5 watt 1987 in a heart beat . I would also love to see some 5/1 watt versions of classic amps . I know all the studio amps have 5 watt settings but it's not the same as an actual 5 watt amp with the volume up.

    They should have stuck with Pentode configuration on the EL34's like the 50 watt 2204's are. Fatter power amp dynamics when cranked. Pentode push pull that is. Not saying it is bad amp, because it is a cool little 20 watt JCM800. The wood craft is top notch as always over there in England.

    After owning a 50 watt Marshall straight head for years I always thought the JCM800 was a joke that didn't even come close to a 50 watt JMP straight head with EL34's because it had no tone while soundman from all over the US said I had the best sounding 50 watt Marshall they ever heard hands down.
