Mars Incorporated - Bigger Than You Know

The Mars brand is somewhat known but doesn't nearly have the recognition it's capable of. This video talks about the evolution of Mars, the products they produce that many aren't aware are from Mars, and the advantages and disadvantages of this type of marketing.

    Here in the UK, the Mars Bar is a very big brand, so it's no surprise that they're a big company, although I didn't realise about the pet food. Snickers and (our) Milky Way very much feel like they're from the same family. I would expect most people in the UK to know they're from the same stable.

    Kit Kats were developed by an English candy company called Rowntree in 1935. In 1969, Rowntree entered into a licensing deal with Hershey allowing them to manufacture Rowntree's products (mainly Kit Kat and Rolo) in the US . At the same time, Rowntree merged with John Mackintosh and Co. - thus, Kit Kat labels in the US read: "Manufactured under license from Rowntree Mackintosh, Ltd.". In 1988, Nestlé bought Rowntree Mackintosh, but since Rowntree had licensed Kit Kat and Rolo to Hershey in perpetuity (in reality, as long as Hershey makes the products) that agreement transferred from Rowntree Mackintosh to Nestlé.

    Hey Company man! Love your videos and I wanted to comment on this one personally because I used to work for MARS. I was part of an field team that worked in Walmart across the nation. I would basically go into Walmart and sell displays, give advice on where to place products, and let store management know where they stand as far as sells and upcoming events. Hershey also does the same but MARS is way more aggressive especially when it comes to product placement. The company would basically tell us that we needed to go in there and tell management that M&Ms is better and that we had the better sells. They would also tell is that we needed to move any other candy products off the floor or put the other guys display in a bad spot so we could get the better spot. So i know its all retail and trying to get the sell but I never liked the idea bc it was always the same thing ever week in everystore with management saying. ... "it's all the same thing, it's candy!" lol Anyways it's a great company to work for but it just wasn't for me in the long run because they thought they should be everywhere and when Walmart says no then they mean No, not oh okay well if you ask me another million times then maybe haha.

    I'm from the Netherlands and here Mars is by far the most popular of the Big 3 candy-bar companies. Everywhere you go small shops and kiosks offer Mars bars (and related brands as Bounty and Twix). Nestle comes in as a good second and Hershey has hardly any market share. I only know that name from Hollywood movies. The Mars brand is also well established in the Netherlands, probably because their biggest factory in the world is located here.

  • @bloqk16

    @bloqk16

    Huh!? I thought the Dutch, as with the Swiss, were famous for their native chocolate making; but a US company that makes chocolate is popular in the Netherlands? It must be the way the chocolate is made locally; as I've been told that American chocolate is not agreeable with European tastes.

    Really enjoying your videos, man. Keep up the good work! Mars seems like a very interesting company. I appreciate their approach of letting their products succeed or fail on their own merits. It makes their successes seem more genuine; brand recognition isn't exploited to perhaps artifically inflate sales, and they allow the market to dictate what actually sells and takes a place in public life. I may be reading too much into it, but it comes off as embracing one of the finer aspects of capitalism, that of genuine success for each given output. Adam Smith would approve.

    Maybe because you have a candy similar to m&ms called Smarties? In the US, Smarties are nothing like m&ms. They're not chocolate, they come in small rolls, and usually are bought in large bags.

    Yeah, I worked at a grocery store and I was surprised when I noticed the "A Mars Corporation" or something on canned dogfood, which seemed like such a funny juxtaposition with the candy I associated it with. I did notice it was on uncle bens and virtually all the candy that wasn't Wonka or Hershey's. Love the channel by the way, just discovered it an hour ago and working my way through the videos, keep it up
