The 92 Hooters 500 isn’t infamous, it’s famous.

It was the closest NASCAR Cup Series points race at the end until 2004, and the last time an owner-driver won the title until Tony Stewart took 2011 by tiebreaker over Chase instigator Matt Kenseth's teammate Carl Edwards. Funnily enough, Carl's one win was the same race as Matt's lone 2003 win (Vegas three rounds in) whereas Smoke caught fire in the Chase and took five of ten to close out 2011

The 92 Hooters 500 is not only famous for the closest points finish in the pre Chase era, but it was Jeff Gordon's first ever Cup start and the final race for the King Richard Petty, 2 men who are now in the Nascar Hall of Fame

@@conrailman And another fact its the only race to feature Jeff Gordon, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt in the same field
Why did the crowd boo at Kvapil winning the title? No, really, why? He won the title fair and square. The race was INSANE, too. Just seemed like they booed just cause, it's honestly unfair as hell on him. If it's because they wanted Gaughan to win it, well don't blame it on Kvapil. If it was Musgrave, then yeah, due to the team he was in.

I second that, T-K had a consistent season behind him. I was stoked to see him win it. I thought for sure Gaughan was going to win the title. It showed me that anything can happen. The incident honestly reminds me of how the 1992 nascar Winston cup championship ended @ Atlanta.

I mean honestly, if it wasn't the champion that truly deserved it b/c the guy who was supposed to win it got wrecked and the guy who was gonna win it after that got black flagged for a rule that's dumber than a bag of bricks, I'd feel cheated and boo as well.

Better then speed channel documentaries I dont even watch nascar and I've seen all these. Ideos ...top quality
We were happy as hell to see Kvapil win it. It's a crime Dennis Setzer never won a championship. Dude was a class act and a hell of a driver.
12:00 “inadvertently” seems like a very generous interpretation.

I hope this channel gets bigger these videos are on point and super easy to watch complete with visual footage. Great job!
I was at this race. The track had just been reconfigured and the surface was brand new. Freaking awesome race and track back then.
How the hell do you only have 31 subscribers?
That race a real suspense filled clusterflip to the end
My dad was the handoff gas man for the #16 truck team in 2003 at daytona and homestead. Our good friend Randy Dean was the crew chief.
With the chase you'll never get the moments like this. The manufactured ones dont feel the same as these.
Great video and love the music selection, Fozzy's Enemy, very nice!
I remember watching this live. I was a big Brendan Gaughan fan at the time so I was pretty mad too, still feel like he got screwed in that deal. Loved his interview though for sure lol. Jimmy Smith thinking he won the Championship only to find out his driver got black flagged ended up being pretty good karma or poetic justice or whatever you want to call it

Another similarity you missed between the 1992 Hooters 500 and this race: both champions were Wisconsin natives
I'm glad Jimmy Smith got what goes around that day
The Truck series has its own Playoffs starting in 2016, from 2002-2019 Homestead was the season finale
man great job breaking this all down 🤗🎉💯💚

Welp, who's now here after the OTHER worst championship finish in Truck Series history? (Here's hoping the 2043 Truck finale isn't so embarrassing I guess, since horrible endings like this look possible to be a 20-year cycle with this series.)
BIG PROBLEMS
To be honest, I thought Brendan was gunna be Gaughan with the truck series title that year. You see what I did there ? As a kid It didn’t register right away what happened because I started watching the race & then had to leave with my folks & I came back to TK hoisting the championship trophy. I was dumb founded because I wanted/thought for sure Be-Gaughan was gunna win it. One of just a few races I miss & I missed a lot.
This Wisconsinite has watched them all. THIS is my favorite regardless

That’s seriously how you’re supposed to say it, ask the man himself
The main difference to the 1992 Hooters 500 is that the first setback to the points leader going into that race, Davey Alison, was caused by a driver not even in contention for the championship, Dale Earnhardt. The latter had a miserable 1992 season, so many crashes, engine failures and general bad luck meant that he didn't even care by the time they got to Atlanta. The result was that he nudged the front row starters, Rick Mast and Bret Bodine into spins that collected Davey Allison
Alex Meshkin from Bang! Racing??
But why is that a controvercy? The rules are clear, he broke the rules and get a penalty for it. Thats how it works. And why the fuck did the crows boo the other guy? He did nothing wrong? But guess thats how nascar works, and why you just have to love nascar.
I will never forget this race. Back when the truck series was pretty relevant and people cared.
How about rick ware racing fielding 4 full time teams, hoping the top cars have problems and the full 40 car field can hurt someone finishing in 39 or 40. Clearly they can go faster, yeley even said it. Sorenson hinted that the cars have more speed . If ya look at the make of their cars. They try to help their corporate teammates. I’d say a rival make has trouble. Say vickers, and biffle needs to beat him by 8 points, the extra cars can change the points because they get the points finishes the other cars would get if not entered
Smith KNEW his truck was black flagged. Watch the race. Listen to Musgraves radio
Musgrave still got screwed on that last restart.

Because he technically did nothing wrong per the letter of the rules. He fielded five trucks, which was legal until around 2010 I believe, and well it was a matter of circumstance about the wrecks.

I don't see what was so controversial about this. Musgrave broke a rule and got penalized. It's a stupid rule I'll admit, but it's very clear what he did. 🤦🏻♂️
@nascarfanatic2425

I think just the fact that the extra 3 trucks that Jimmy Smith entered had an impact on the outcome of the race and that Musgrave himself basically tried to cheat to win was what the controversy was about. Also, I think Brendan Gaughan was the most popular of the final 4 drivers who could win the championship. The fans really believed that Gaughan got gyped out of a Championship. It especially didn't look good that he was wrecked by one of the three trucks Jimmy Smith entered specifically for this race.
