Marketing: Crash Course Film Production with Lily Gladstone #13

So you've made a movie. Congrats! But now you have to get people to see it. How you market your movie depends a lot on what your movie is. Is it a massive blockbuster? That means one set of requirements. Is it a small, Indy film? That's a different set of requirements. In this episode of Crash Course Film Production, Lily talks us through some of the history and methods of marketing a film to an audience.

    It's a shame that the current marketing environment is leading to the decline of the mid-budget movie. It seems that, nowadays, the only way to make back your returns is to be a huge blockbuster or a really small project. They're doesn't seem to be much room in between.

    Thank god we still have Woody Allen and Wes Anderson on the scene, but I'd give anything to see a new David Lynch movie. All the great mid-budget directors seem to be moving to television though.

    Sometimes the marketing is too much. They announce that a movie is going to be made. Then they announce who they got to write and direct. Then they announce who is going to star in it. Then they announce when principal photography starts and wraps. Then the trailers come out, spaced apart so they restart the hype machine each time. Then the actors, director, writers go on talk shows. Honestly, by the time the movie finally hits the theaters, I am sick of hearing about it, and avoid going out. I just want it to be over.

    People get the Breakeven estimate figure wrong all the time. For a movie to Breakeven it must make twice its total budget, that's production & marketing. This is because theater owners receive 30 to 35% of the gross box office and depending on the state you live in there is an embedded tax of about 3 to 9% on each ticket. For a movie like Justice League, that had a total budget of $450 million dollars, break-even estimate would be around $900 million.

  • @eshesimua

    @eshesimua

    theylied1776 very true, but theaters are actually receiving more like 45 to 50% of the "nut"

  • @theylied1776

    @theylied1776

    eshesimua Yeah, it depends on how the contracts are structured with the studios. We had a client years ago that was thinking about buying some theaters and we researched it and got him in touch with the National Theaters Owners organization. And yes they actually call themselves NATO.

    Wish she mentioned Blair Witch Project, it had a viral campaign be there was a term for viral campaigns. It's hard to describe to young people just how different and groundbreaking that was. Also, I never knew there was a movie star named Florence Lawrence; hilarious. And of course like everyone else I want to see Fart Cloud. Perhaps it should star Jack Black's character from Tropic Thunder

    Actually, a film won't break even if it makes just enough to cover marketing and production costs. Because the cinemas still have to take their cut of the box office receipts. So if a film makes the same as it cost to produce and market, you first subtract the share of the box office that goes to the cinemas, and then the studio is left with less than what they spent to market and produce the film, meaning the have lost money on the film.

    Love this series, but they're wrong about movie profitability. A $150 million movie that spends $75 million on marketing does not "break even" at $225 million. Remember that the studio splits the ticket sales with the theater. Most likely, that movie won't break even until about $400 million.
