Mark Steel - Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast

Cunt or Wanker
It’s the end of the series and Rich wonders how tourists in Kings Cross will feel if their last action of earth is to queue to stand by a fictional wall. His guest is a man who has a lot of stories about how he got into comedy, it’s Mark Steel.
They chat about eating pork pies with Joseph Heller, helping failed escapologists, an idea for a brand new radio 4 panel show, whether you can stand for political office and still be a comedian, the extraordinary story of Mark’s birth parents, what it’s like having a child going into comedy and getting your own back on a snooty Darwin expert. It’s a fabulous end to what has surely been the best series yet. Will the commissioners bring the show back? Yes of course they will - more in September (and a couple of specials coming out before then too)

Mark Steel is a genius and seems not to age. Richard Herring is my favourite interviewer. He surprises most of his interviewees with his research and he is content to listen to their answers. I look forward to the next RHLSTPs.

The ultimate insult in the Comedy Marks confusion came in 2003, when Mark Thomas played the Left Field tent at Glastonbury. It was packed for his whole set, and when he finished the place emptied out almost completely. Then Mark Steel came on and did what an intimate but very funny set. I felt so bad for him that I sat right at the front and tried to look really supportive.

He kills it on news quiz in the small number of recent ones he is on. When I was listening to last weeks (or perhaps the one before) I thought that Susan Calman was doing a perfect Steel impression. I know a lot of comedians naturally copy each other's style due to working together for a long time, but fuck, the whole time of her monologue I was thinking 'this is great, but would be better if Mark actually did it himself'.
