MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 381 : Kraftwerk's "Electric Cafe" 1983-1987. 30 April 2024
The tenth Kraftwerk studio album - "Electric Cafe" - is my favourite of their records with a subtle theme about man and technology enabling a global village united by electricity, industry and electronics, and how this transforms human relationships. It's a visionary record about the layers of reality and our inner and outer lives, but also the last one by the 'classic; 1975-1987 lineup. It took 5 years to make, over 750 studio sessions, a bicycle crash, an abandoned LP and tour, a standalone single, a video finished two years before the song was ready, low charting singles, endless remixes and overthinking, creative paralysis, and ultimately resulted in the band fracturing. I love this album though, and it has grown in stature with time. Like much of Kraftwerk it was ahead of its time, and in many ways, it still is. 30 April 2024.

Another brilliant video . Now I want the telephone EP on vinyl. Beautiful review 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much for this execellent review.
Great video. I learnt quite a few new details about this odd era in Kraftwerk's history. I too don't understand the dislike for the album. The title track has always been one of my favourites ... and I got to see it live, finally, in 2017. 😊
Enjoyed that.
Great episode Paul 😁😁👍👍 I remember distinctly the strange time after The Model when all our eyes were on Kraftwerk and they kind of disappeared with only Tour de France being put out, so when Electric Cafe was released, they seemed to be behind the times instead of way in front of it! Great way to put it that after the bike crash, Kraftwerk's work ethic seemed to change drastically and they weren't the same band after it, I didn't like the album (sorry CD I bought) at the time but now I've grew to appreciate it a whole lot more 🤔😁😁 cheers again for this one Mark 🤩🤩👍👍
Karl Bartos said that the TechnoPop album from 1983 exists and someday he will "donate it to a museum".

I have similar thoughts on this album I really like it and don’t get the relative dislike it seems to get, although I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s my favourite. For me the concept for “techno pop” was the way it was sequenced side A was techno and side B was pop. Getting the 12” at the time at this end of the Midlands was difficult, which might explain why they didn’t chart. It took me years before I eventually picked the singles up.
