Nope, he wasn't working steadily until he landed a role in You Can Count on Me (2000). Before that, he was bartending to support his theatre career while going for auditions of which he got rejected countless times, except for a few small roles in movies nobody had ever heard of. Even after the success of You Can Count on Me at Sundance, he still went back bartending for a short time. (Huge Ruffalo fan, btw)
Damn, at the end when he says "Say thank you to him" I almost teared up. You can tell by his face and the nervous scratching head tick that he was really holding the tears back.
Anyone who hates Mark Ruffalo is just not human. Precious cinnamon roll who needs hugs and joy.

Mark Ruffalo is living proof that if you want something enough, you’ll get it. What an inspiration
Ever since I saw him in 13 going 30 and nagged my mom about it every time it was on TV, I knew we'd see a lot more of him. Such an inspirational story. One of our generation's greatest talents.
That's what I think makes Ruffalo the perfect Hulk. He's been though the struggles of becoming ill and losing his brother and I think he channels this pain and anger into his role as the Hulk.
Great interview. It moved me to tears. I have always admire him. He's a very talented, gifted actor who knows how to choose his roles. He seems to be a very noble guy, down to earth with a fanfastic sense of humor. I just love him.

Such a beautiful human being, let alone a fine actor. Just to hear him talk, is heartwarming.
Why do I feel like he a good spirit - so charismatic - and I just want to hug him and be his friend / no homo - just he makes me happy
He just a big soft huggable teddy bear. So unassuming.. beautiful man.. loved him the most in 13 going on 30
i grew up on him in 13 going on 30 and had no idea he was struggling so bad both personally and professionally, breaks my heart. who would have figured only now he will get the recognition he deserves, back than i thought he was as big as jennifer garner.. i seriously wish him the best, he seems so nice.
"The same way you make peace with every other mystery, you live alongside it."
He deserves all the love he gets.
As an actor he was truly blessed to get that many auditions. Especially if he was SAG early on. Most actors are lucky to get a few auditions a month. You have to have a really good agent to get you out that much. Actors that audition that much are going to 2-3 auditions a day. Those are generally the working actors already in the game. He must have have a good agent. LOL

What an actor and a genuine person
I'm so glad he's overcome so much but has stuck to his guns. Such a talented and versatile actor. His role in Zodiac was my personal favourite. Mostly because he played a detective and he sort of reminds me of a young Columbo. Haha it was somehow very fitting.
So much respect for this man! So amazing and kind
Loved Mark Ruffalo since 2004. 13 Going On 30 was the one to introduce me to Mark. His such a versatile actor. He can play the romantic lead, the laidback dude, thrillers I could go on. His a fantastic actor.
Love this guy. He's ridiculously good looking, and a fine actor.
Man... now i'm an even bigger fan than before. Onward brother! Keep us entertained. Oh and thanks again for doing such a good job as Dave Schultz in "Foxcatcher".
There are actors who announce they're retiring and then there are people like Mark Ruffalo. I'm thankful that he decided to stick with acting despite everything, especially because of films like The Normal Heart and Spotlight. This reminds me, I haven't seen Infinitely Polar Bear yet.
This is such a moving piece.
From a guy who survived Brain Cancer and who was left heartbroken when his brother got murdered back in 2008. His such a great actor. Loved him since 13 Going On 30.
what a down to earth, humble man!

Aw, I didn't know Mark had it so hard. I don't think I've seen him ever ruin a role, just a solid actor.
Mark has one of those personalities you can't help but like him!😊😉❤️GOD BLESS HIM
God bless Mr. Ruffalo for having the courage to be part of a story that is so raw for him. He set a beautiful example for his kids. I like thinking he and Mark Schultz had each other to talk to
Such a pure soul. We don’t deserve him tbh.
I had hear about his back story. I am so glad that he has recovered to the best of his ability and is doing well. It is so sad about his brother. From G-d we all come and to G-d we all must return.
this guy should be a leading man in everything. seriously he's that good.
7.54 heartbreaking reaction. he life had a lot of misery and loss and look how he smiles towards life. he is a real winner in life.
He played the Hulk because actors need money so he can continue working in great indie films like You can count on me, Eternal Sunshine, The kids are alright and so on.
Oh how much I love this man. The most perfect and pure human being
I love Mark! He's such a sweet guy and a stand up activist too. Just an all around good dude.
I really enjoy seeing him in movies his presence is quite alluring and I never knew he began his acting career as an adult :O
when i watch mr ruffalo i have a hard time remembering that the character is not real how fabulous for another handsome and hardworking craftsman to shine
I've been a fan ever since You Can Count On Me. He is this generation's Paul Newman. Both on and off the screen.

That's where I first discovered him too. He was compared to a young Marlon Brando. He's such a lovely guy and a genuine human being! If I could find someone like him, I'd bloody marry him in a heartbeat!! Lol.
He's so cute and smol
I'm only here cuz I'm started watching and binging MCU movies, and I admired his acting prowess as Dr. Bruce Banner (and can also relate to his character being a dork😅) . Didn't know he had it rough. He's such a genuine and kind person. I'm happy for him. Such an inspiration.
He´s so emotional , great actor! (Y)
He is so handsome😍😍😍😍

Pram De Rooy I've heard he's going to do the Columbo reboot. Which would be great, because as much as I dislike remakes and reboots, he is PERFECT for that role. No one else has the same distracted, rumpled charm as Peter Falk. I hope it's happening, because it will be awesome.
@shoesoffbootson5317

Pram De Rooy The closest he's come to evil is playing guys who were not fundamentally bad, but who did bad things--guy who sleeps with his best friend's wife ("We Don't Live Here Anymore"), guy who doesn't come forward after a hit-and-run ("Reservation Road"), guy who goes way overboard getting revenge on people who wronged his family ("Now You See Me"). But I agree that seeing him play a truly dark, evil character would be fascinating. And, I am big enough to admit this, also really hot.
