Amazing interview! I think you're quickly compiling the best resource for what martial arts filmmaking in HK was really like
Well done Eric your a great interviewer man ! You just held space for mark, attentive listening 👂 & let him tell his incredible life story. That was an honour man. Thanks to you both 🤜🫷
I wish Mark Houghton taught Hung Gar on YT 😭 Outlaw brothers is my favorite movie. His daughter is a great fighter too 😊 Thank you for interview
You have been crushing it!!! This hypes me up for my martial arts film!! We start shooting the trailer soon! Thank you for inspiring us out here via your consistant and great content!!
Noticing Lau Kar Leung in the background of the thumbnail 🙏
Yes, at the 2 hour 35minute Mark, the trouble with the Chinese films for me is there is no heart, no soul like the 80s and 90s Hong Kong Movies. They were just the greatest.
I'm so glad he mentioned Yuen Pan Pan and Yukari Oshima as well, aside from Moon Lee, these are some really underrated legends in martial arts action films Would be awesome if you somehow managed to interview some of the ladies from Hong Kong cinema, as well as, if you could somehow track down Jeffrey Falcon who acted alongside Mark as a "typical Western bad guy" in a few Hong Kong films Also, from what it sounds like, Lau Kar Leung seemed to have a very realistic view on martial arts as a whole compared to a lot of other so called sifus and grandmasters

Amazing interview! There are a few great action movie podcasts out there (Scott Adkins!) but yours is undoubtedly the best for deep insights and going beyond the fans' questions into social and cultural elements behind martial arts & movie styles. Truly superb, we are so lucky that you have decided on this path, starting with all your HK reviews (loved them and miss them!) right up to the present.

Thanks. Scott's the Rogan of action podcasts. Hope he keeps doing em. He's been a mentor to me in these.
Enjoyed this so much! Mark is awesome 👏
I always thought HK action creators would semi-improvise fight scenes because they just thought it felt best at the moment but I never knew it was a way to prevent the actors from becoming overly familiar with pre-designed sequences so as to not be able to adjust on the spot if it didn’t work for them on the day.

SB was different from most Indies back in the Shapes era when it was almost completely improvised.
How have i only hust foind this. Thabk you gor sharing Mark is one of the greatest, i always loved him in those movies and Hong Kong Movies and hea right. Those days are over. Such a great shame. 🙏🙏🙏
Incredible interview
Yes Martial Virtue. Be Virtuous through the Martial Arts. Man this is such a great interview. I love Mark and his and his Master's mindset, personality, character, heart, soul. Absolutely the BEST💪💥‼️
What a great interview! I learnt a lot from it, thank you
This was fricking great!!
These interviews are historical artifacts that I need to archive 😂👍
Great stuff Mark & Eric - huge fan of Lau kar leung and Mark, love Jackie's early work but LKL stuff aside I'm not much a fan of DM2. I love the fact that Sammo & Lau Kar Wing are still close pals, that's awesome.
Mark. Fantastic stories. i really enjoyed this
Without JC Drunken Master 2 would lose all it's charm and heart.
Use to see Liu Chia Liang (Lau Kar Leung) name as fight coordinator in the David Chiang (Chiang Da Wei), Ti Lung movies 🎥 then his brother Liu Chia Ying (Lau Kar Wing) in the Shaolin movies w/ Fu Sheng, Chi Kuan Chun, also Chen Kuan Tai(Tai Sheng/Pek Kwar). My Hung Gar Kuen comes from Lum Jo Sigung, through Kong Buck Sam Sifu(who passed away on 02,January 2024) my Sifu , since 1977 😳1975 w/ his student Vernon Rieta Sifu(during my Marine Corps days) Mark Sifu is such a Fantastic guy! Now his daughter is up & coming 😬
What incredible stories, I was enraptured the entire time
Это очень круто. Продолжай в том же духе Эрик. Потом посмотрю с переводом.
I started taking a fight choreography program. I have some martial arts experience and currently training in Tang Lang. I wouldnt say that I am very Athletic or flexible though in fact I struggle in that regards but I discovered with all the Taolu(Forms) that I've had to practice that it helped me a lot in the course in that I am able to pick up the moves right away and able to adapt on the fly whenever they need to add or change anything in the choreography. I discovered that its almost the opposite of what my Sifu has been teaching me in regards to fighting for example telegraphing movements. I've had to slow down and give my partner a wider breathe to react and make my movements obvious. Whereas irl you want your attacks to be quick and hard to read.
It’s 何麥
Sifu Houghton is sounding more and more like he is actually Chinese when he speaks English.

Mark has lived for more than half hIs life in Hong Kong and spoke cantonese more than in his natitive tongue so his own language may sound rusty
👏👏👏
@1:42:00 I don’t know if it started with martial artists or gangsters, but the use of those poems is likely illegal because it was (is?) a practice of triads to use secret poems as a covert way to communicate during ceremonies, initiations, as well as to identify their affiliation and rank to others in the know.
He caught my attention with the freedom fighters.
Been lucky to train with Mark on several occasion over my 28 years of Hung Gar training, a great funny but seriously awesome kung fu guy on every level, his original hung gar teacher needs more recognition due to his lineage not coming through Wong Fei Hung but descended from the founder of the style Hung Hei Goon and features multiple forms that are unique to this Malaysia branch (Mang Fu Chut Dong, Woon Ying Fuk Fu Kuen etc)
