The first carriage had Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh (Prince Edwards wife) and Sir Timothy Lawrence (Princess Anne's husband), the second carriage had the Duke of Gloucester (Late Queen's cousin) and his wife.

You might remember that King Charles was a keen polo player which requires advanced riding skills. He's very comfortable on a horse. The late Queen rode at Windsor almost to the end of her life.

Hi Mark, another good one ! Britain at its best ! The whole thing was flawless, even the horses were on thier best behavior, the kings horse however did for a moment look like it was wanting to do its own thing outside the Palace. Princess Catherine was immaculate as usual and the children were good too. These events are something for this nation to be proud off and in an ideal world bring us together. I really love your respect and enthusiasm for this country and our traditions. I was wonderful to see the monarch on a horse for the first time in decades at Trooping the Colour. Its reassuring to the King keeping these amazing traditions . I do think although with some bias Britain does this stuff better than any other country. 👍🇬🇧🇺🇲🐎🐎🐎🐎.

France is a close 2nd next Friday.
The slightly bewildering thing about these highlights is that they actually miss out Trooping the Colour! This is the core of the ceremony, when a small detachment of the Regiment whose colour is being paraded - in this case the Welsh Guards - accompanies an officer carrying the Colour, which is 'paraded' through the ranks. There are 5 Regiments of Foot Guards - Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, and Welsh, and a reserve, London. 5 out of 6 have a Royal Colonel: Camilla, Grenadier( which is why she was in red); Scots, Anne; Irish, Catherine, in green; Welsh, William; London, Edward. There is a very limited and prestigious order of Knighthood, the Order of the Garter. By its blue sash you can tell the Royals.
I’ve “done” the Parade and it’s just the most joyous and pleasant of fun days out 😊 standing next to total strangers who, after five minutes, will turn around and chat, asking if you are okay and can you see, if like me, you are only a titch! And be your best mate for the day! Totally disproving the nonsense that the British aren’t very “friendly” - we ARE - we just have our own way of being friendly (a little bit of “social distancing”) until we feel comfortable with it 😉. It’s just one of those Ceremonial occasions when we “turn out for it” - regardless of the weather, that will never stop us doing things! - and everyone is just there to have a good time, cheer at anything that moves, wave a flag and just feel patriotically proud at seeing the Armed Forces, in their ceremonial uniforms marching “perfectly” . It is a feast for the eyes for us as well as visitors and tourists☺️ Everyone is in a relatively good mood - stupid is the fool that would try to ruin it! It’s been said, that should someone in the crowd dare to shout out something rude, offensive or anti Royal (or all three!) the attendant Police standing close have to get to that idiot to “rescue” them before the people in the crowd close by rip them to shreds! (And yes, it has happened! The youth shouted vulgarity to HM the Queen as her carriage passed by and unfortunately for him, it was heard by a person standing near who “waylaided” him and was given what we know as “a hard slap”! That youth learned hard a hard lesson that day! Following on from Trooping the Colour is Beat the Retreat - I’ve watched that too - it is a magnificent ceremony dating from James II - celebrating the “end of the day” after warfare. General Public tickets are available. The most “moving” bit is hearing the two buglers play The Last Post as the sun begins to set over Green Park… I will see if I can find a YT link that explains it better than me and in more detail. I found this from 2022 …. If you search for Beat the Retreat, there are many longer clips of the ceremony kzread.info/dash/bejne/k3-hq7CRXZysZ84.html
Summer in England (namely June) is the best time for a parade. The two-birthday tradition for a British monarch dates back to 1748, when King George II combined the annual summer military march with his birthday celebration, though he was born in November.

I went down to see it Mark. We stood across the road from Wellington barracks to watch the troops leave before heading to the Mall to see the King go by. Then down to the park (behind where the horses are standing on the parade ground) for a picnic and a gin and tonic or two. After that we hit the pubs and watched the flypast go straight over our heads with a pint in hand. I got home around 23:00 that night in a bit of a state.... marvelous day.

The Kings and Queens have, for centuries, celebrated their real birthday privately and had an 'official' birthday in June, when it's warmer, for Trooping the Colour. As head of the armed forces it gives the King the chance to review the troops - and us to see a wonderful parade.

It's crazy that these "highlights of trooping the colour" video leaves out the most important part of it all: the ceremony of actually trooping the colour (= presenting the flag to the troops). That's the whole point of this celebration!
3:30 you mentioned street cleaner. Well, every time there’s a parade like this with horses, there are street cleaning machines (road sweepers) that whizz around tidying up after the horses have gone past. You never see them on TV, but everything is swept up ready for the procession to come back along the mall…. Then the sweepers go round again. You have to remember those horses get well fed, and the manure they produce is good for the Kings roses, so nothing is wasted….😊
I have had a ticket and watched it as my Husband( then my boyfriend) who was in the Coldstream Guards was on parade, our youngest son followed him into the Regiment.

@@MarkfromtheStatesThe trooping the colour takes about 3 hours so all involved will probably have sore feet or bottoms. Catherine was dressed in green because recently she was made General in Chief of the Irish Guards and some were on the parade that day .
As a British citizen I managed to get tickets - I think they cost £20 each. It was the year of foot & mouth so alas there were no horses but it still well worth it despite having to wear a suit & tie. Every time the colour passes you , you have to stand albeit encouraged to by a burly looking soldier!
It's a pity that there was no commentary on the video. It would have been easier for you (and everyone) to follow. However, the King showed excellent skill with his horse who was, in horsey parlance, being a bit 'spicy' on the day.

It surprises me that little Charlotte wasn't waving to the crowd. It's wonderful to see the reaction of Americans to our ceremonial. Well done Mark.
Tickets for the Birthday Parade ( aka Trooping The Colour) usually go on sale in early March. These are for Standing Only, or Stand Seats on three sides of Horse Guards Parade. There are three parades over a period of three weeks- the Major General's Review, the Colonel's Review, then of course the King's Birthday Parade itself, for which a ballot is held for tickets. The first two parades are effectively Full Dress Rehearsals. You can expect to be on Horse Guards for well over two hours. Keep cool 😎💥

HM Queen Camilla is Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, so she wanted a coat to reflect but not replicate part of the bright scarlet of the uniform. I loved the plume on her hat. It shows her lighter side.
I'm glad you are interested in this! It's spectacular, in all its glory. One day, try to find a better video of the processions, etc., there is a lot more to it and it's done so well.
Years ago, having an ex military cousin who worked for the Lord Chamberlain and a father in local government , I got a ticket for the stands to watch this event. It was quite magnificent, so much better in real life than on the TV.
Mark, the couple you didn't recognise are the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. She always looks so elegant. I've met her. She's delightful.
It’s ironic that the red uniform has its original origins during the English civil war. The new model army was formed by the parliamentarians. Oliver Cromwell (Lord Protector) They used wool dyed with madder to created a red cloth. Because it was cheap to produce. The first time the army had any uniformity to the regiment. When the monarchy was restored King Charles 11 kept the red uniforms.
Mark, go see it next year! It's a grand party, lots of fun and everyone is so welcoming. Bring a picnic blanket, good hat, some food and something to drink, you will have such a good time!

Before the Trooping, there are lots of rehearsals so it’s possible to enjoy a lot of the parades etc. just by being in London.
Anne (6 February 1665 - 1 August 1714)[b] was Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland from 8 March 1702 until 1 May 1707. On 1 May 1707, under the Acts of Union, the kingdoms of England and Scotland united as a single sovereign state known as Great Britain. Anne continued to reign as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1714.
The first two carriages were: (1) Duchess of Edinburgh (Sophie) with Sir Tim Laurence - Princess Anne’s husband (2) the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (Richard and Brigitte). Riding were the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne with the King in the centre.

I think my response is mostly correct. Trooping the Colour dates back to 1748 and on that parade Square since 1760 King George II created an official Birthday for the Monarch and it was to be held in the summer months to avoid parades and crowds having to endure winter Cold and snow. The Trooping of the Colour was a separate event to honour the Battle honours of the foot Regiments. The King decided to incorporate The Trooping of the Colour into those summer Birthday commemorations, so the tradition has been undertaken ever since. Hope that makes sense
leading you have king Charles and looking at the picture from right to left you have Princess Ann, Prince Edward, and Prince William. And the horses that Charles, Ann, Edward, William are riding were gifted to Charles at the coronation from the Royal Canadian mounted police.

Anne, then Edward, then William following His Majesty KC3, then the carriage with the next-in-line.
Prince Edward's wife, Sophie - Duchess of Edinburgh, was in the carriage with Timothy Lawrence (Princess Anne's husband). The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were in the other carriage. Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester is the late Queen's cousin. I believe that the Duke of Kent was in the car. He is another cousin of the late Queen. King Charles was on horse back for 2 hours at the age of 74. Queen Elizabeth used to attend Trooping of the Colour on horseback, riding sidesaddle. The last time she did so was in 1986 at the age of 60.

Ist carriage seen. Sophie, Prince Edward's wife, and Tim Lawrence, Princess Anne's husband. Second carriage, I think the Duke & Duchess of Gloucester. Charle's horse was a gift from Royal Canadian mounted police and new to crowds ! It was Prince Edward with William. Camilla was with Kate wearing a dress styled as a Colonal of one of the regiments .
Queen Elizabeth's actual birthday was in April- when weather can be fairly dodgy, and so it was decided that she would have an 'Official Birthday' in June which could be publicly celebrated. King Charles' real birthday is in November- which is even worse than April, and so he has continued the tradition. Tickets for the Trooping of the Colour are like gold dust- I assume many of them are allocated to specific people and organisations - but it is much easier to get tickets for teh Full Rehearsal a few weeks earlier. Obviously, the royals aren't there, but you get to see the parade. My parents went one year.
Charles, William and Anne usually do the parade on horseback, this is the first time Prince Edward has joined them. This of course is the first time Charles has done it as king rather than Prince of Wales.
The video missed out alot of the main part of the parade i.e. the Trooping of the Colour along the ranks of guards in slow time march.
Yep, King Charles remained on horseback to receive the parade for the duration. Not bad for 75 years old! The three behind him were Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince William of Wales. You may have noticed King Charles' horse got a bit spooked a couple of times. I did get a bit nervous at that point! He seemed to control it well though. He's apparently a very deft horse rider
Yes, william and the king were on horseback. Still feels weird not seeing the Queen there. You can see by keeping your head back and chin up, whilst looking down.
What I find amazing is at 74 King Charles III on horseback for the entire Trooping the Colour

A granny in Australia says...you see, it is not about WHO is currently King or Queen, but it celebrates the MONARCH's birthday, i.e. the role, not the incumbent. I don't think any American (and don't get me wrong, I luvs yez anyway) gets the difference of the intent of a monarchy (over generations) as opposed to a celebrity (usually over their lifetime). I offer Ms Markle as evidence. She was as doomed as Anne Boleyn from day 1. Your President is more a celebrity than part of a very rich fabric, and maybe that should be considered. Unfortunately Mark, there were few highlights in ths vide. Trooping the Colour is really all about The Colour - a big day for the subaltern who receives it and literally troops it past all five Foot Guard regiments with his escort, before the general march past when The Colour is paraded past the Royal Box.It's been about 30 years since the late queen attended the ceremony on horseback, so this year is a first for most folk' but as I say, you missed the whole purpose of the trooping. It's alway best if you can get the BBC coverage because of the running commentary that explains/answers all the usual questions that you and others always ask. The Colour/regiment this year was the Welsh Guards, identifiable by the headress plume of green & white. There are several other ways of idientifying the rehiments, but too long to explain here. I'll be putting up a skide show on YT shortly that covers this.
The horses that the King , princess Anne, the Duke of Edinburgh and prince William are riding are gifts from the Royal Canadian Mounties.
The most disappointing part of these highlights, they omitted the 'Trooping the Colour' !
The Royal family channel you're watching isn't that good it's not official and the footage is not the best The official channel if you're interested is called The Royal Family. Pains me to say it but the best channel for Royal events is the BBC which is the only reason why I watch the BBC anymore
