Seeing Mark Farner live today is closer to seeing the real Grand Funk than seeing the Carl Brewer/Mel Schacher version that calls itself GFR. Farner was the heart and soul of the original band. It's a damn shame we will never a truly reunited GFR play together again. I saw them live in 71 and 75. So I guess I should count myself luckier than most.

I saw them in 1970 and the reunion tour in 1998... 27-1/2 years later to the day. Absolutely great both times. Anybody got a DeLorean with the flux capacitor option... I need a ride. Dec 4th 1970 is waiting.

@@nicke.3782Never got to see them back in 1970, as I was only 10 years old then. However I started listening to them in the early 70's and got to see them during the 1998 Reunion tour. Fast forward to the present and I'll be seeing the Mark Ferner Funk Trio in October. I just got my tickets for that show. Really looking forward to it.

So iconic that this song would reflect the band itself as the other band members choked Mark from the band, yes he is the captain but still GFR is a ghost ship sailing in the dark looking for its captain. The Closer to Home album notes...Like the generation to which they belong, their first album cried out, “This is me …this is what I see.” Their second grew as they grew and said, “This is me…this is what I feel”. And now with this, their third, they join hands with their millions of Brothers and Sisters and say, “This is me… this is where I am going.” They are three that belong to the New Culture setting forth on the final voyage through a dying world… searching to find a way to bring us all CLOSER TO HOME.

@Ryan J. Horvath sell out show. The band got a lot of push back from their hometown. They had greater acceptance everywhere else. Detroit rock stations treated the band as lightweights. Great show from the last row of a 15000 seat arena. Bloodrock opened.

I fear the day when I'll no longer be able to see Mark play "Closer To Home", the very song that so perfectly defined the youth movement that began so long ago and defined the greater part of my life. On that day I will cut off my thinning gray ponytail, put away my faded blue jeans and tie-dyed shirts, hang up my dirty red bandana and thank Mark for the long, strange but beautiful trip it's been. And when it's my turn to cross the great divide as well I'm sure I'll hear this song again 'cause you just know that, "if there's a rock n' roll heaven, well you know they've got a hell of a band". Mark would have it no other way.
