Back in earlier 20th century, George Cohan, the great producer and playwright from Irish background was often mistaken as Jewish because his named sounds like 'Cohen'. He would be thrown out of 'restricted' country clubs and suddenly there would be no tables in a half empty elite restaurant. He NEVER said "I am not Jewish". Never. A proud man and a proud American - James Cagney played him in the great movie Yankee Doodle Dandy.

@@rolandhawken6628 , Easy for you to judge 80 years later. You have no clue what it was like to live back then and under a tyrannical regime. If he spoke out, he would have been arrested and sent to a concentration camp and his family could have been killed too. You cannot support your family if you are locked up in a jail or concentration camp and have your business stolen or taken. When you have children and family, you do what you have to do to ensure their survival and are not afforded the opportunity to play hero or even have the ability to battle like you do when you are younger and independent without children or family yet. He also probably had to support his brother's family since they were sent away to work camps in Germany.

@@patrickmccarron5059 So it is okay as long as he and his kin survive? It is you who does not grasp the reality of the situation ,human beings were being slaughtered on an horrendous scale the whole of Europe was in flames . Playing the hero does not come into it ,that is not the issue, most of the world was involved in a blood bath and lived with death and loss as an every day event . In such a situation you should ask yourself ." Why should others suffer and die ,but not me "? Have you actually seen this film ? For if you had I doubt you would be arguing with me . By the way you were sent to work camps if you were of use to the Germans you did not have to error to get sent . He would have known that . You can not hold a country unless the people consent to occupation certainly not one the size of France . The truth is they could not wait to turn their Jews over to the Nazis 14,000 were collected and deported to camps by the French police , even the children , Yes they put children into the hands of the Nazis .

@Anita Pavese 'the spirit of our people' are you referring to the French during the occupation? From my perspective the documentary did not reflect positively towards the French, but rather presented a nation that was willing to collaborate with an enemy. Maybe I am wrong, that's just my opinion regarding this documentary.
