Maritime traffic jam: Ship blocking Suez Canal could take weeks to dislodge

Ойын-сауық

Experts troubleshoot to try and speed up dislodging the cargo ship blocking the Suez Canal and causing a maritime traffic jam.
Some companies are being forced to travel alternative routes taking on additional time and costing thousands of pounds.
Diggers are currently trying to excavate the bow of the ship while tugboats are attempting to pull and push the boat free.
Sky's Helen-Ann Smith reports.

So let me get this straight. Most of the suez canal has two channels, and yet a super tanker (one of the few big enough to cause a blockage) somehow finds itself in the single channel and despite being only 3 years old its engines fail, no one drops anchor and the wind blows it into a 90degree perpendicular turn so that it accidentally blocks the entire canal. And no one thinks this isn't slightly suspicious

As ships get bigger to carry more goods there will be bigger and bigger surface areas for the winds to hit. Winds have been moving sand around the Sahara and Arabian Peninsular for millennia it was just a matter of time before this happened. The canal was built 150 years ago for ships nowhere near the size of modern ships. If this route is to remain viable then there are going to have to be major works carried out on the canal to prevent this happening again. For those ships that are waiting in a queue I would have though that regardless of the extra cost they should be replanning their routes because this is unlikely to be fixed in a few days.

The Ever Given is longer than the biggest aircraft carrier in any of the world's navies - which usually have a crew of hundreds running the ship, with other work to hopefully keep the rest of the crew totaling thousands out of mischief. Meanwhile, this ship has a crew of about 50. The ship is mostly automated, and everything has to be working, for the small crew to run it. Another thing to remember, is that large numbers of crews worldwide have not been allowed off their ships since this COVID thing has joined us; so, many of them are profoundly tired.
