Walking draglines of different sizes have different clearances. As for this 7400 the back of the revolving frame is going to hit the bank before the shoes will. But on the much larger draglines, the back of the machine will clear a sloping bank and the shoes will hit first. That's because the back of the larger draglines is much higher, which comes in handy if you need to skin the mud off of the road while it's raining. A Caterpillar D9 dozer would fit underneath the back of the Marion 8900 I used to work on, so you could skin the mud off a road under the back and it would stay dry while you walked the machine.

@jix177 Experienced dragline operators can judge just how close they are to objects and how to manuever the machine around in tight areas, so backing a dragline into a sidewall practically never happens. Although the walking gear will rotate forward, the dragline can never walk forward because it would tip forward.

Here's a question nobody has ever answered for me about walking draglines: I know they always walk backwards, but what would happen if you reversed it up against a cliff face and couldn't get turned around to get away from the cliff? Can they walk forwards in an 'emergency' situation like that?!

Moving over burden off the coal, not digging coal. I was a ground man on a 7400.

The oiler on the ground is the eyes and ears for the operator, he has limited view behind and on the off side. If the oiler wasn't paying attention it could happen. The couterweight would come down on the bank and you would be stuck. You could not swing around because your shoes would hit the bank.
