Marine Corps VMF-323 MAG-11 Death Rattlers NAS Atsugi Japan 1958 Flying FJ4-B & F8U-2 NAS Cubi Point
This video was digitized from a reel of silent 8mm film from a collection by Marine Corps 1st Lt. R.T. Lehmkuhl with VMF 323 MAG-11. I think this footage is of them flying out of NAS Atsugi, Japan and maybe Cubi Point, Philippines in 1958. Film boxes were postmarked April 1958.

Great clips. Big fan of Marine Air Wing footage. I spent my four years with the Wing. We called the place KEW-by Point. Not sure if that's the proper Tagalog but that was the usage. I was there a couple of times in '75/'76. Never noticed it during the day. It's beautiful. I was on Night Crew [Avionics].. Our main base was MCAS Iwakuni Japan. [RJOI]. Semper Fi.
It’s kind of amazing how many different models of fighter aircraft were in the U.S. inventory between 1945 and 1965. Just the support logistics alone is mind boggling.
Thanks for putting this together. BTW, we prounounced Cubi Point, "Q Bee". Let me know if we were in the wrong but that's how I heard it roundabout 35 years ago.
Great to see Marine air. I was with VMA-533, A6's, at Iwakuni, 78-80. We did a Team Spirit, and then aboard the USS Kennedy at Camel Station during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Semper Fi.

Semper Fi, Marine!
Definitely footage from Cubi Pt. (My time at Cubi Pt. was in the 60s during the Vietnam War, as a radar/EW systems tech. rep.) Operation Strongback was underway prior to my arrival at Atsugi in Mar. 58. I served in MACS-1, (Marine Air Control Squadron 1) and remember many of the aircraft shown. At least one squadron also flew the single engine Douglas A4D. In Aug. 58, MAG-11 deployed to Taiwan in support of ROC ops. in the Formosa Straits & Quemoy & Matsu Is. off the coast of mainland China. Good bunch of Marines - Good duty.
Correction to my previous post: The aircraft I mentioned was the old F4D, not the later A4 which I supported in the 60s.
Interesting variety of aircrafts and good quality video !😍👍👍👋
Excellent footage. The VMF- 13:11 323 Furies are FJ-4, not -4B. Only 1 set of speedbrakes The F-8’s are F8U-1 Crusaders, not F8U-2. No tail strakes. Also shown are USN F-11F Tigers, F2H Banshees and A3D Skywarriors. Lots of other interesting aircraft types on the flight line.
Thanks Ed !
Saw a couple of Willy Victors from VQ1 on the ramp. My dad was aircrew with them at Atsugi at the time of this film. Super cool!
Wow. Just wow.
Thank you for presenting this precious footage, wonderful to see so many Spads on that pad.
I love seeing footage of USMC aviation. My dad was in VMF-222 as a mechanic on F4U-4 Corsairs in the late 1940s.
What a wonderful variety of aircraft types. Playback at 1.5x or even 1.75x speed gives a more realistic effect.

Yes, I was going to say 1.5x speed seems to give near realistic movement. Must have been filmed at 24 fps and played back at 16 fps and digitized, making it seem slow motion.
Great to see USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) tied up there. I remember her well. Liked and subbed.
Amazing variety of aircraft.
Awesome footage, thank you!
Early video is definitely NAS Cubi Point!
Ticonderoga is in the background
Thank You.
Lee Harvey Oswald was based at Atsugi during his time in the United States Marines. He was a radar operator assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron 1. He was stationed there from September 1957 to November 1958 - Wikipedia
VMFA 323 Come to fight, come to win. Marine mud movers. Semper Fi.
It's Q-beePoint, not Cubby Point. And just a suggestion, but the music doesn't fit at all. This is military aviation! Cool jets! Did the director of "Top Gun" use wine-and-cheese date night slow-dance instrumental music? Hell no, and for a good reason.
What are those planes at 1:13? What is that on top of them?

I believe they are Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star early warning radar aircraft. It was a modification of the Constellation aircraft

@@MKCMLT Still there in 1962 when I reported to Atsugi & when I left in late '64. One night a Connie came home with 20mm cannon shell holes in tailfeathers. They were use as radio eavesdroppers.

Using Wikipedia, I think that they are the US Navy version of the EC-121 called EC-121M after 1963. Earlier, the Navy designated them WV-2. They probably were serving with either VQ-1 or VQ-2. I served with the 1st Marine Air Wing at DaNang in 1966-68, and would see similar EC-121 Super Consellations, but they were in natural metal, not black like these.
