Marine Corps kids respect on the playground. COLORS!!

Marine Corps kids playing on the playground on base...when colors sound this is what happens. And what SHOULD happen! This video is of my children and their friends. I filmed from my back door inside my house. It was a part of our military life I always wanted to remember. This was at MCAS New River.

This has been happening on military bases around the world for decades. If you’re a BRAT, you grew up knowing what was expected of you. When I was in high school in the ‘70s, before the start of any film in base theaters, the National Anthem was played with the flag on the screen. You were to stand with your hand on your heart, and we did. If a couple of teenagers got cocky and did not, a pair of MPs were sent down the aisle to correct the issue. It could become a sticky situation if one of your parents held rank.

Having lived on military bases with my father being in the military, respect was just something you grew up knowing. You had an understanding of the sacrifices your mother or father made as a member of the military. Sometimes that admiration and respect can lead you into a career in the military as it did for me. But at the very least it makes you a respectful, proud citizen.

Rather than show you are the independent thinker in the world full of mind numb robots (I am sure this is how you perceive yourself) You simply show your absolute ignorance in an old, honored and sacred ceremony. There is nothing here that suggest victim. Only respect due. But as I doubt you yourself have even dedicated even a moment of your life to the defense of others or something higher than yourself, I understand your ignorance. Best of luck hiding behind the shield of freedoms that others have created. Your safe space admission ticket and special snowflake award are that way --->

They looked at each other and stood, Not one had moved a muscle. They wouldn't move even if they could, Not one was in a hussle. They stood as their hearts, Sang to the music in despair, As they let go of all their parts, As if the music was their air. Only they were the ones to stand, As respect is now little to none, While their souls became a hand, When the song was almost done. Reaching out to the ones who died, As if they knew them as a friend, The song started to hide, When it came to be the end. They stopped and waited a moment, Then went on with their day, These five children gave a hint, That respect was still at bay. ~TB~

Any military brat in any branch of the service at any station at any time. I was 26 years active duty, Air Force. Ten years as a First Sergeant and now retired for 16 years. We lived all over the world and 4 kids born in three different countries. Recently my 34 year old daughter was coming out of a post office about a mile off base, heading back to my car, and the prevailing winds carried the sounds of retreat off base. As soon as she heard it, she came to attention and, "stood retreat." How much better could that be? I was proud, and she just said, "So am I." Her oldest brother is now retired Navy (Corpsman, so he was really a Marine - FMF pin) who was in the Balkan wars and Afghanistan and another brother was 8 years Marine. That's 54 years combined service from my family to yours for your protection and freedom. You're welcome. People who do not understand what this is all about are all barking up the wrong tree. Nuff' said. You can't win an argument with a stupid person.

I love this video. I love the way the children recognize the significance of "Retreat" being played on base and show proper respect. (and especially how the little girl in the yellow dress acts - stops playing, shows respect and, when the music stops, returns to "little girl" mode by jumping, spinning and playing). It's not brainwashing but a show of respect for military traditions. I've had the honor of seeing hundreds of children on half a dozen fields getting ready for youth soccer stop what they're doing, stand still, face the flag/music and offer respect for Army tradition. It's a proud dad moment when you see your son set an example by standing still first, without any prompting.

I was embarrassed, to see my boss refusing to stand at at attention when the flag was being raised. I stood, and even put my hand over my heart (due to the flag being in clear sight). He kept on working and even made a joke about the current guy in office. I am not an obama fan at all, but the flag doesn't do with him, but with liberty, and freedom. He still made fun of men for doing it, but I can deal with his bullshit. It was than, I knew that he truly didn't appreciate his freedom.

My husband is retired Air Force and the only base I've heard this is on Fairchild AFB (not McChord, Travis, Eglin, McDill, or Homestead AFB's). It's played on many bases (Air Force, army, navy, Marines). Everyone is required to stop what they're doing, even civilians, and stand at attention until the music is over. If your going to your car with 15 bags of ice cream in 100 degree weather then you just stop in the middle of the parking lot until the music stops.

sorry about the troll thing and you dont want conflict? telling someone they are in bubble is can of starting conflict, but I encounter conflict in conversations all the time. And kids these days are alot smarter then 6 year olds back in the 80s. How do you know its training? How do you know its not respect for their family and friends? You can say you are not trying to be controversial when talking about something you only know from the out side looking in, but yet, those comments can be taken as such. Are you trying to understand who these kids are? What they have seen? If this is a military base, how many of those kids have lost parents because of war and they are not doing this because of any training, but respecting their family that might have fallen, their friends.

Ok, you are placing your own ideas on what these kids are feeling off of a video and som how structuring their full mind set on this alone and not what they are actually feeling or who they really are, you have no idea what those kids feel and yes, kids are much smarter then were at this age. My 6 year old already knows about cow slaughter, heart operations, the civil rights movement and things as such. He understands respect and gives it. And "my Bubble" as you put it, again, you have no idea what my bubble is. for some reason, because I think these kids are showing respect I have no varying mind set. That I only hang with these people (which that in it self is a puzzle, because you never really say who these people are). You seem to be the one in a bubble by thinking you have any idea off my full mind set by a simple comment and thinking, for what ever reason, that I am in anyway up set. I am not. its a computer chat and for all know, you could be a computer. I dont know you and have no idea who you are, its just words on a computer screen of someone who is passing judgment on another based on a simple idea I had that I feel these kids are showing respect......

Violence and armed conflict have always been part of the human story. Rough men have always been needed. Now, would it be nice if we didn’t need armies? Heck yes. One could only dream of such a world. But that isn’t reality. If I were you, I’d be a little more careful when you talk about other people living in bubbles.

Was an Air Force Medic for four years then joined the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman for 19 year's and while in the Navy served with the Marines for over five years. Don't get to a Base that often anymore, but when I do I try to stay for the lowering of OUR FLAG either for Evening Colors at sunset on Navy and Marine Bases or Retreat on Army and Air Force Bases at 5 pm. Though I will admit that Evening Colors on Navy and Marine Corps Bases are more moving then Retreat on Army and Air Force Bases. Very proud to see these kids react the way they did and their reaction on Military Bases is normal, though I do think it was rehearsed a little bit for the video, but their actions are normal on Base.

I recall years ago, living in a little house near Mount Olivet Cemetery, and hearing the Twenty-one Gun Salute as well as "Taps", during a military funeral. I'd be standing there, doing the dishes, and be filled with quiet awe, and then tears. Tears of grief, joy, and an overwhelming rush of gratitude.

When I hear people say they “run indoors” to avoid saluting colors, I try and understand really why one would do this. If you were in a dangerous situation where you would have died, but a person stood in front of you and willingly gave their life for you, what is your idea of saying “thank you?” Is it sending a card to the family? Is it attending the funeral to throw a rose? Is it lighting a candle once a year? What is your life really worth? Can you spend a few minutes a day to reflect that someone gave their life for you to enjoy your daily freedom and time with your family? That is what “To The Colors” and “Reveilee” or “Retreat” are. These are daily reminders and courtesies to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, for us. Maybe you can take a minute to reflect on this honor.

+P. Edward DiMarco My _"best shot"_ just so happened to nail you right in the bullseye. Now do yourself and your children a favor by doing your homework on the _Hitler youth_ and maybe you'll understand the huge chasm that exists between teaching a child to be _patriotic_ and in teaching a child to be a subservient snap to attention drone that knows nothing but how to be _obedient to the state_. Teach your children to think for themselves rather than trying to do that child's thinking for them. Again...good luck and be careful that your ego and butt-hurt self doesn't keep you from investigating and accepting the truth of the matter. Good luck.

+BloodTar They live on a USMC base. The entire base comes to a standstill at 5pm when the flag is lowered. Those in uniform stop, pull over, etc. and salute the flag. Civilians, dependents, etc. don't have to do anything but it's considered respectful to stop what you're doing if you're outside and wait until the bugle ends to continue. So, military wives will pull off to the side of the road, and kids will stop playing on the playground for the 30 seconds or so that the bugle plays. It's not brainwashing, and it's not Hitler youth. Respect for the flag has nothing to do with respect for the president, their office, or the government. It doesn't even have anything to do with respect for the military.

  • @BloodTar

CylonBookworm _"it's considered respectful"_ No, actually it's considered sheepish, robotic, submissive and compliant. Not exactly the kind of traits I desire for my 3 children, that's for sure. Regardless of what ground that one is standing on they should be allowed to think for themselves and not be required to get in the goosestep with the rest of the herd lest they be shunned by the herd. Teach your children individuality and not herd mentality.

Some people mistake exercising your rights as being anti-American. I don't stand, salute, or say the words to the pledge of allegiance at the school I work at. Not because I'm "anti-American" as many would say, but because I don't believe anything in the pledge is accurate nor is this country striving to make it so. I also don't agree with having children mindlessly pledge their allegiance to anything. Mandatory patriotism isn't freedom. I'd rather show my thanks to the men and women that served this country by exercising the rights they fought for than to conform under peer pressure and bullies.

The bugle call heard in the video is called Retreat. at an Army post it is played just prior to the colors coming down at the end of the duty day (Retreat). there is normally a short pause, a couple seconds, and a defiant cannon is fired using a blank round signaling Retreat which at that time the bugle call To The Colors is played. Normally when Retreat is played everyone stops what they are doing if outside and face the garrison flag pole. People in vehicles pull over, stop and should exit their vehicles and also face the garrison flag pole, soldiers assume the position of parade rest. at the sound of the cannon, military personnel come to the position of attention and present arms and civilians should place their right hand over heart until To The Colors has finished playing and the flag is slowly lowered down and in the hands of the flag detail. At Reveille in the morning, the same thing happens except prior to Reveille (about 30 min prior) the first bugle call is First Call then a another cannon shot then Reveille is played and the flag is quickly ran up the flag pole. Taps is the last bugle call of the day and plays usually at 2200 in the evening. On old cavalry posts Like Ft Sam Houston Texas, there are several other bugle calls throughout the day that had other meanings back in the day but are now done in honor of Army tradition.

I grew up Army brat and we did the same thing. It's not cultish or anything. Everyone has a routine whether you're militairy, civilian, christian muslim, agnostic. It becomes second nature like not even thinking about brushing your teeth you just do it. This is a symbol of respect. It's not a "piece of fabric flapping in the breeze" it's honoring what the flag stands for and honoring those who fight to protect it. And if you can't see the value in that as an American citizen then go back to your life and continue to do what you do, and the brave men and women protecting our nation will continue to fight for your freedoms regardless of your ignorance. S/N: The blonde girl with the blue shirt was CLASSIC there towards the end inching towards the swing make sure she gets it haha! I remember doing stuff like that.
