It's not her fault that her lower register was so raspy, this was about the time that she discovered her left vocal chord had ruptured. She's actually lucky to have escaped having surgery, like Adele had to have, but she couldn't speak or sing for about 6 weeks. So really, this is actually a pretty amazing performance given her singing chords had essentially BURST. That's almost like arm wrestling with a sprained wrist. You could see she was in pain towards the end...

Erin Thompson I get what you're saying, but I think the tinge to her voice is an artistic choice in this performance to strengthen the dichotomy between the two halves of a very particular personality she's trying to convey in this song; it's very much akin to storytelling. Listen to how she's switching between registers on the same syllable of a word. I'm willing to bet she's doing it on purpose. I've heard her sing lower notes live, and she can definitely hit them and sustain them without the use of vocal fry. She's a very skilled technical singer, and it's easy to be deceived by her vocal stylings.

+Henry L Alright, I know this was posted ages ago but I just wanted to say this isn't an artistic choice. She literally ruptured her vocal chord. She wasn't choosing to have a raspy voice. She can achieve a low raspy voice, but in this video, I don't think this level of rasp was intended. Though, I can see where you are coming from with her using it in her advantage.

+Henry L It's not an artistic thing. She doesn't do that now when she sings this song. This was just a byproduct of a barely functioning set of vocal cords.

+No More It was raspy because it was about to give out... Her vocal cords ruptured during the Electra Heart era. The raspy sound you're hearing is what vocal cords sound like when they're extremely inflamed (at best) or have nodules (at worst). I don't know if she had nodules or not, but she did have to stop singing for a few weeks for it to get better. I believe she's taking lessons now if her singing from Froot is any indicator since it's a lot smoother.

she was healing from a ruptured vocal fold, guys. that's why her voice sounds so raw and scratchy. especially on the lower notes because the injury affected her lower register.

I actually love her husky raspy low notes!

i love how she always has that little toy poodle with her.

She used to smoke, but I read that she quit in October 2011. I don't know how long it takes for smoking to affect someone's voice, but it may have affected it a little bit. She sounds a little hoarser now than she used to.
