Hi there. I got this bike after watching your video. It' a great bike, it rides smooth, I love it and everyone says it looks great. So, I guess, thank you very much for this review, it changed my life. 😁 I got a question about Tannus Armour inserts (tube+armour) for this bike: for original size tires, 29 x 2.60 (66-622), you go with Tannus 29" x 2.6"-3.0" (Plus Size Armour) or 29" x 1.95"-2.5"? You mentioned in one of your vids 2.5" but I'm not sure what size tires you use. Thank you in advance!

Your channel got me wanting a Pole so bad but the price is really holding me back :( Now Phil has me seriously considering the Marin.... and it has zip pay options! But short chainstays and relatively "short" reach compared to evolink (I'm 6'4")... honestly choosing a mtb is the hardest decision of my life haha. Thanks for your input.

Yeah they were an absolute steal on sale!

I just got a 2020 alpine trail 8 as a backup bike. Pedal strikes, just orderd new cranks. Its super fun to ride, pedal n jumps awesome but my kona process eats up the downhill/enduro jank a bit better. Might also extend the fork to 170mm

The name of these bikes is pronounced Maa-rinn. A town just north of San Francisco.

I have a good hunch as to why Marin went with the ethirteen cassette. They are probably using an XD freehub and didn't want to get microspline hubs for their Shimano builds, the SLX mech and shifter are cheaper than GX Eagle, even if the ethirteen cassette is more expensive than a SLX or GX Eagle cassette. The 9t does give you some interesting options though, can easily drop down to a 28 or even 26t chainring and still have better top end than the 10t on Eagle and Shimano 12 speed cassettes with the typical 30t ring (dropping a tooth on the back is equivalent to going up 4 on the chainring). 30-46 climbing gear is also going to be kinda meh on a heavy enduro bike, so a 28 or 26t chainring will help the climbing too (though that ethirteen cassette is also offered in 9-50, not sure if Marin offers that as an option).

The bike came out a little bit before XT and SLX 12spd came out so I feel they were looking for a wide range option without having to go sram. 11spd shimano is very cheap OEM and mixed with the e13 cassette its a cheap wide range alternative.

Thanks mate! The new one is definitely a full on enduro rig, so if you climb just to descend, it's a great option. It wouldn't be my first pick for an all rounder though. Check out my all mountain buyers guide for some bikes I'd recommend in that category

Great reviews as always. But you mentioned the price of the Marin is $2,999, but I can see on their website it's saying that the price is $3,599. Have they really jacked the price up that much since Feb on the Alpine Trail ??? And I noticed the prices also differed on another review of the Polygon 🤷‍♂️

I would definitely recommend checking out something else, this wouldnt be the bike for that. A 110-130mm trail bike would be the go.

Hey Rick, sorry for the late reply. For a beginner definitely the D7 and upgrade it as you go. It efficient on more XC style trails and generally more fun and playful on undulating terrain. It's still very capable and will really grow with you as you progress and upgrade it.

I'm itching to buy this, its now at discount priced at 1890€.

Great review. I notice at the 7:00 mark you mention adding a volume spacer, but to my knowledge there isn't any available. I managed to make fox float work with some mods to the spacer diameter. Also, the Vee Snap tyres are rubbish.

I saw on marin web-site that Marin Alpine Trail comes with 2.6 wide tires. But in your video you are running 2.4 and there is not too much room at the back or maybe i didn't saw well. Hi, Thanks mate. The 2.6 they are running really arent a true 2.6. The 2.4 I have measures as a big 2.4 and it rubs only one hard cornering. The Biggest I would run would be a 2.5 Maxxis or 2.35 schwalbe and to be honest I wouldn't see the need to run bigger than this there isn't any real benefit.

One of my favourite bike KZreadrs because you ride around the northern beaches. I’m just asking for your opinion on the trail 7 for example will it be reliable and last for quite a while or would maybe a trek fuel ex5 be a better option for reliability because I am looking for a bike that will last upwards of 5years. Great informative video. I ended up buying the Alpine Trail 7, fantastic ride. However the bike does bottom out regularly in the rear even after correctly setting rider sag. I haven’t been able to find any volume spacers that suit the xfusion 02 pro RXC rear shock with the upper trunnion mount.. Have you been able to source any suitable volume spacers to suit? Or are there any other options without changing out the entire shock, ie adding extra grease? Thanks

Same problem, tried for 2 months. No way I could find the right pieces, even the service centre for xfusion Germany does not have the right size ones, they sent me 3 which have the wrong inner diametro and they rattle everywhere. I am almost giving up and changing the shock, which would defeat the pourpose of buying a budget bike in the first place. Before that i Will try to cut a nylon piece out of a chopping board to fit It and see if It works. But i have no expectation at this point. That shock sucks on this bike.

Loved the review. I have a low budget and was wandering why I might get the alpine trail 7 over a riftzone 2

The Trail 7 is cheaper than the Rift with the current sale price (in Australia). I'm thinking about buying one even though it is probably not the perfect choice fro me as a first dual suspension bike.

Really depends on what kind of riding you do. The Alpine 7 is better value components wise but if you ride mostly trails and undulating terrain then the Rift Zone is the choice to go with. If you a hitting bigger drops and chunky stuff at real speed then go the Alpine Trail. I'm probably getting a rift zone for something more efficient as I am not taking as many risks these days.

@@trailtalkmtb6603 This response really helps as this thing is so tempting at the value it offers. In the odd chance I need something like this I could just rent. This puts me at the RZ 2 and 3. There are things I wish were different on the 2 (Recon) and would love the 3 as spec'd but having a hard time pushing the budget.

Very similar bikes, the marin is slightly longer, which will suit taller riders. Other difference is that the marin has a bottle cage mount if that is something you need.

Yea Marin bikes look and ride great and excellent value! Pity the local distributor is only interested in selling bikes and not warrantying them. Bought a bike for my son and have a legitimate frame issue (Which happens) taken nearly a month for them to get back to me and now I gotta send it back for them to fix it, which is gonna take weeks to get back to me! A local bike dealer would’ve had done this within the first week. I’m just saying need to aware before ya purchase, wish someone told me.

I cracked my Rocky Mountain Slayer and it took 7 weeks to get a replacement. In the past I have cracked giant frames that get replaced within a week. Local bike dealers don't always make warranty replacements quicker.

Very detailled review, that actually persuaded me to buy this bike :) - arrived yesterday, can't wait to take it for a ride! For the last 3 years I have been busting my ass on a hardtail (Nukeproof Scout) with 2.8 tyres and the last hardcore dualy I owned was a Giant Faith I, 15 years ago so I have completely lost touch with recommended tyre pressure on an aggro dual suspension with big tires. I am just curious to know what front and back pressure you ride with. I should be about the same weight as you, just three time your age :). I also ride around the Northern Beaches (Mt Narra, Twin Peaks etc.). Thanks in advance.

Thanks mate, you are going to love it, such an awesome bike. Will be a lot smoother than a hardtail! I run 23 upfront and 27 in the rear. I run pretty grippy tyres too. Anything lower in the rear and you risk a lot more punctures in our terrain.

I took the bike (with the stock 2.6 tyres) to Mt Narra mid last week and I have to say that after this first ride I was not convinced at all (massive lack of traction uphill and lack of control in slow, steep and rocky sections)... For my ride on Sunday, I went tubeless, dropped the pressure down to 21psi front and 23psi rear (with a rim protection insert), dropped the handlebar by moving spacers and left some compression (front and rear) just for the climb. The difference it made was massive uphill and downhill, I am a very happy man now! I am always amazed the difference that a few psi can make in riding experience...

I know you hate the "this bike vs that bike" questions. But interested on your thoughts between the Alpine Trail 7 vs Polygon N8. About the same price with similar specs. Looking at the rear suspension designs I'm unsure how they would differ in ride feel?

Both are very similar it more comes down to what you want in the bike. I prefer the alpine trail as it's a little roomier and has a bottle cage mount. The n8 is a bit easier to flick around but only barely

Can you get it with 27.5 wheels because I want to do jumps to with it

Looking to buy this bike soon as I need a size upgrade quarantine has got me riding again, but would like to possibly upgrade the shock, any recommendations other than the fox x2 (out of my budget) looking at something cheaper with similar travel any thoughts on something like a trunion super Felix select plus etc

The suntour Triair 3CR would be the best value upgrade compared to the X2. The Rockshox super deluxe if my personal favourite but it's a bit more expensive.

Did you happen to change out the rear hub to a quicker engaging one? If so, what hub did you install?

I talked a bit about this later in the vid but in short for more undulating terrain and less technical riding at speed the Rift Zone will be a better option. But for bigger hits and chunk at speed the alpine trail is the go!

What are the hubs like? And are they loud?

You're mentioning that the tubeless ready tires need sealant and tape. I've noticed that there is already some sort of tape attached to the rim. I actually inflated the tire with this tape and sealant and it seems fine. Should I use other tape?

Yep that is just a plastic rim strip, its not sealing the rim, there are cases when it will seal like this but its not ideal and wont work as the sealant starts to dry up. For the sake of reliability I would put some tubeless tape on :)

Thanks mate. Yeah definitely two different bikes. I would take a look at the riftzone. Better value than the stump and can do about 85-90% of what the alpine trail can do and is a lot more efficient on XC and Trail. I'm down sizing to one soon (I think) and I will hit all the stuff I do on my alpine trail. The rift zone 3 is my pic, doesn't need any upgrades :)

The marin alpine 7 vs the devinci troy nx ?

Would you recommend this for someone who wants an all rounder mtb leaning toward more downhill stuff. I'm new to mtbing and I've been looking for a bike about 4 weeks for a bike and I keep coming back to the marin or the trek fuel 9.7 but the marin seems better for the money. I want a bike that I can progress on that won't limit me

The fuel would be a better option for someone new to mountain biking. The alpine trail is best suited for enduro riding so more aggressive terrain. You will be able to progress on the fuel and it will be a better bike for the job, check out the rift zone too

Personally I would save the cash and go the rift zone 3 alloy. Same spec as the carbon and only a little heavier. But if you value weight than the carbon is the better option

Very good bike! In the US the price of the Ibis is very tempting. If you can afford it I would try both bikes an see but the Ibis is a very good bike with amazing suspension

5 year warranty on the Marin's here in Aus but check with your local distributor. Very different bike to the trance, better comparison is to the reign. Comapred to the reign 27.5 the reign is more a freeride bike and a lot more squishy (for lack of a better word). With the reign 29 the marin is a lot more agile, while the reign is better for straight line stability and more efficient on prolonged climbs. I feel the marin is better on more chunky technical trails too.

* Please help me decide* Listen, i had pretty much made up my mind to get the ripmo af, but this price point and spec has got me considering this one. My only questions are pretty basic - how do the yari and x fusion compare to the dvo diamond and topaz on the ripmo value-wise? Would you say the tektros are better or same as the guide R's?

Hmm that's a toughy. In Aus, they're both in different price categories as the ripmo af is a fair bit more expensive so the marin is an easy pick. But in the US I know those lines are a bit more blurred. Unfortunately, I haven't ridden the AF but int erms of the brakes the tektros with the pads changes had a little more power than the guides. The dvo suspension on the ibis is a bit better but the drivetrain etc are better on the marin. The suspension kinematics on the ibis is a bit more advanced but that's all I can really comment on. Geo is pretty similar too. Ibis is a little longer so that's something to think about too.

Ripmo AF if you can get it. The DVO is really high end stuff and built to last it's on the same level as your Fox Factory's and RS ultimate. Also buying a bike with the intention of upgrading it can get really expensive really fast.

@@theGiver3 Fair call. In Aus they're 5k for the entry level build, which really is in a different ball park to the Marin. Either way theyre both great bikes and you'll love either of them :) I know another sub has a ripmo af. He might comment here and you can have a chat.

The Marin will be easier to upgrade groupset on as you already have a XD driver. The Ripmo AF runs NX Eagle which is a pita to upgrade as you basically have to replace your rear hub (unless Ibis specced a hub that can be upgraded to XD or microspline).

Been using this bike since May. Works great, but I did have ti change the shock...oddly enough the 2021 model comes with the same shock I bought separately. Did you have issues with break consistency? My rear break fades to nothing. I keep bleeding It, but of i do more than 2km technical descent It goes away completely. No leaks and pads have 80% left. Clueless...

@@trailtalkmtb6603 No, the bite Is perfect with metallic pads. The point Is that when the rear break heats up the lever pulls straight to the handlebar like It was empty. If I pull It three or four times It bites again. It sounds like air in the sistem, but I fully bled the break and It still does that. Hope it's not an issues with the seals and o-rings in the lever... Thanks anyway

Hmm probably a Medium with a 45-50mm stem. But if your trails are very fast, you could go a large.

How tall are you because I had a lapierre stolen and I need a new bike my old was a large but only had 27.5 recommendations?

Im 185cm and with a 45cm stem it was perfect. It is still a very agile bike given its geometry, so I wouldn't be concerned about wheel size.

Im between the alpine trail 7 and the bmc speedfox o3 two 2020, theyre both around the same price, which one is the better bang for buck??? Anyone is welcome to engage, i need some opinions, thanks and great review dude !!!!

su meh well rockshox is just as good as fox. Just a brand difference and the x fusion shock is really good but it is upgradable. And the massive 11 spd cassette has a huge range of cogs, more than the average 12 spd. so I would pick the alpine trail 7 but it depends on your wants and needs. Also alpine trail 7 has 160mm in the front and 150mm in the rear of travel so take that into mind

Thanks mate. They are a bit different style of bikes. The Alpine trail is better value but if you ride trails and xc and more undulating terrain the BMC is a good option but I would look at the rift zone at that point as it's better value and has better geo. The Alpine trail is a real enduro bike, so pedal up to just descend.

i live in indy so not so many downhill trails, should i just get the bmc 03 two or a rift zone?

I hate how it seems like Marin can only compete in a conversation because of value. It's never just also a good bike, it always "for the price" lol. But I guess that's how Marin is positioning itself in the market so no fault there.

Should I get this bike or the Trek Fuel EX 8 2020?

The Marin San Quentin 1 will be available in Australia in a month for $1100. Below that there are a few compromises. Its worth spending a little extra to start with :)

Don't buy It if you live in Europe! The bike Is Great but there aren't many authorised sellers and It Is impossibile to find volume reducers for the shock, WHICH ARE A MUST on this bike unless you want to ride a semi-hardtail in order not to Bottom out on EVERY compression or jump. After 2 months of searching and asking to every bike shop I could find, I finally received the spacers. Went to my local shop to check the shock out and fit them and Surprise: they do not fit and Just rattle around. I ordered them by an xfusion seller in Germany (in Italy where I live virtually no one ever Heard of xfusion shocks) , giving them all the details of the shock and STILL THEY DON'T FIT. I Say there Is no point in buying a good low budget bike if you need to swap the shock right away and pay 500€ more. I am super pissed. It's a shame because I love the bike, but hate the shock and something as simple as a stupid plastic piece could change the handling so much for the better, but It Is impossibile to find. I Will either make one from a nylon cutting board or get a new shock right away. A true disappointment.

One of my favourite bike KZreadrs because you ride around the northern beaches. I’m just asking for your opinion on the trail 7 for example will it be reliable and last for quite a while or would maybe a trek fuel ex5 be a better option for reliability because I am looking for a bike that will last upwards of 5years. I am just stuck on a decision between the ex5 and trail 7. Keep up the work, Hope to see you out shredding one day 🤟

Thanks mate, sorry for the late reply. The alpine trail will definitely be more durable and more capable on rougher trails. So if you are looking to progress and do harder stuff then go the trail 7, but if you are just doing trail riding and a bit of XC then go the fuel.
